Boxset of four classic films from the 1950s. 'Simba' (1955) is an adventure drama about a man who travels to post-colonial Africa to visit his brother only to find he has been killed by a Kenyan rebel group. When Alan Howard (Dirk Bogarde) arrives in Africa, he soon learns his brother has been killed by the Mau Mau, a group of rebels who are fighting against the newly imposed rule of the white man. Enraged by his brother's murder, Alan decides to stay and put all of his energy into fighting the Mau Mau who he now considers his enemy. However, along the way he falls in love with a neighbouring settler called Mary (Virginia McKenna) who disagrees with his abhorrence of the native people and tries to put an end to his prejudices. 'Sapphire' (1959) is a hard-hitting crime drama exploring racism towards immigrants among the London police and public. Sapphire (Yvonne Buckingham), a fair-skinned West Indian immigrant is discovered hiding in London and murdered. To the police, led by Superintendent Hazard (Nigel Patrick) and Inspector Learoyd (Michael Craig), the case seems clear cut - Sapphire must have been killed by a member of the black community. However, when Sapphire's brother (Earl Cameron) turns up at the police station and Sapphire's true ethnic roots become known, Hazard and Learoyd must face up to the racism of two communities and, quite possibly, their own. 'The Happy Family' stars Stanley Holloway and Kathleen Harrison as a couple who refuse to move from their house as the government reveal their plans to build a Festival Hall on the South Bank. The tenants of the local corner shop, Mr and Mrs Lord (Holloway and Harrison), are the only residents who refuse to make way for the construction - even when the police issue an eviction order. As the family barricade themselves into the shop, the bailiffs must try to think of another way to get them out. Violent Playground (1958) is a tough kitchen sink drama starring Stanley Baker and David McCallum and is set amongst the tough council estates of Liverpool.

"It's far too pleased with itself. I wince when I see it now", director John Schlesinger observes of his 1965 film, Darling. You can tell why he's embarrassed. Looking back, his swinging 60s' satire about a model (Julie Christie) so keen to get ahead that she ditches her husband and betrays a succession of boyfriends looks hideously dated. With its self-consciously hip dialogue and unnecessary voice-over, the screenplay by Frederic Raphael (who also wrote Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut) doesn't help. Most of the men Christie encounters, whether Laurence Harvey's slick businessman (who can't pass a mirror without preening himself in it) or Dirk Bogarde's neurotic TV pundit (who has delusions of literary grandeur), are as narcissistic as she is. Although this seems to be a cautionary tale about slick, superficial London media and fashion folk, it's obvious that the filmmakers are half in love with the world they're pretending to lampoon. The visual gags--rich, society matrons at a charity event gorging themselves on food or Christie's poster being plastered over an image of a starving child--are heavy-handed in the extreme. Still, Christie is tremendous in the role which established her as an international star (she won an Oscar). However shallow and selfish her character seems, we can't help but warm to her. --Geoffrey Macnab

Initially, Hargreaves approaches Hamp's case with disdain; however, upon learning that Hamp volunteered for duty on a dare, that he is the sole survivor of his unit and that his wife has been unfaithful in his absence, his efforts on Hamp's behalf become more impassioned and earnest.

Max (Dirk Bogarde) is a night porter in a Vienna hotel in the 1950's. When beautiful Lucia (Charlotte Rampling) checks in, they recognise each other from a terrible past; Max was an SS officer in a Nazi concentration camp who had abused and tortured the then teenage Lucia, a prisoner. Lucia is traveling with her husband, an orchestra conductor and when he leaves to continue his tour, Lucia stays behind as she and Max find themselves compelled to renew their former, intense, sadomasochistic relationship. Max is a reluctant member of a group of former SS who are ruthlessly covering up their pasts. They soon consider Lucia a threat and urge Max to hand her over. He refuses and hides out with Lucia, while his former comrades enact their threats. This is the story of an obsessive passion, an 'amour-fou' which compels two lovers to be together - despite their lucid awareness of contravening all morality, even their own, and the certainty of their oncoming tragic destiny. This is the newest 4K restoration supervised by the director herself, making this the most definitive version of THE NIGHT PORTER, finally doing justice to the filmmaker s extraordinary vision. The Little Polar Bear is a wonderfully sweet movie adaptation of the bestselling children's book by Dutch author and illustrator Hans de Beer. Lars--the bear of the title--lives in the North Pole with his father Mika, who warns him that he should not mix with any walruses. Unfortunately, Lars is already best friends with Robby. The two of them just can't understand what all the fuss is about, raising issues of tolerance and understanding to viewers of all ages. This isn't to say the film heavy-handedly throws messages at its young viewers. Subtle points made about society and environment are there to be interpreted, but it's the friendship tale that's at the heart of the movie. Along the pair encounter four hilariously depressed lemmings, the happy snow goose Pieps, Lena the Arctic hare, Caruso the singing penguin and the pretty bear Greta, to whom Lars finds himself curiously attracted. No violence. No pessimism. --Paul Tonks

Initially one of NBC network's most successful series, The A-Team ran for 90 one-hour episodes (with a few feature-length specials thrown in) from 1983 to 1987. The premise of the series was certainly different. A group of US operatives is sent to rob the Bank of Hanoi during the Vietnam War in an attempt to destabilise the country's economy, but the bigwig who organises the raid is killed, leaving no indication that the mission was officially sanctioned. Returning home, Smith (George Peppard), BA (it stood for "Bad Attitude") Baracus (Mr T), Face (Dirk Benedict) and that "crazy foo" Murdoch (Dwight Schultz) suddenly find themselves accused of criminal activity, obliging them to set up as benevolent mercenaries. They tear around the country in what looks like a delivery van, generally do-gooding while keeping one step ahead of the inept military police. Snappy, witty and fast paced, the series began as a spoof of the action-thriller genre. It wasn't until the later episodes that an element of seriousness crept in, which may have caused the decline in audience figures eventually resulting in the show's cancellation. On video and DVD though, it remains a feast for fans of classic cult TV.--Roger Thomas
