Hometown Story: Released in May 1951 featuring a stunning young Marilyn Monroe on the brink of stardom. It is a rare glimpse of Monroe before her breakthrough roles in 'Niagara' and 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes' which catapulted her to fame... and into history. Monroe plays Iris Martin a secretary whose boss is an editor of a newspaper who suspects that big business is reponsible for his recent defeat in a state legislature election. He begins a campaign against his opponent...
Plaster Caster is an intimate documentary portrait of legendary artist and groupie Cynthia Plaster Caster famous for plaster casting the penises of rock stars including most notoriously Jimi Hendrix. The film explores how Cynthia developed her unique pursuit follows the ups and downs of casting sessions with a shy guitarist and an extroverted glam rocker and goes along for the rise as Ms. Caster prepares for her first gallery show in New York City. Featuring candi
Despite being directed by Roger Vadim, this And God Created Woman is not the 1956 classic but a loose remake from some 30 years later (1987) which attempts to update the original's themes. Rebecca De Mornay takes the central role, this time as Robin, a woman released from jail on parole due to her recent marriage to Billy (Vincent Spano). Once on the outside, she pursues her dreams of rock stardom and enters into a love triangle with state governor elect, James Tiernan (Frank Langella). Whereas Vadim's own original film may have exuded unspoken sexual tension (in no small part due to its star, Brigette Bardot), any pretence of subtlety here is lost as De Mornay sheds her clothes at every possible opportunity in the film's series of soft porn sex scenes, all accompanied--as indeed is virtually every moment of the film--by an appalling 80s rock soundtrack. The acting is uniformly awful, with De Mornay taking the prize for the worst performance of all, fighting a losing battle for the viewer's attention with her seemingly ever-growing hair. Indeed, And God Created Woman is best recommended to those who gleefully indulge in the worst that the cinematic arts have to offer and it would easily feature in a top ten of most awful films of recent years. On the DVD: Alongside the chapter selection facility, the various filmographies point to what a waste of potential talent this film is. With the picture quality unable to improve on the TV-movie feel of the whole project, the audio presents the horrible American rock backing in all its glory--despite that fact the music sequences are amongst the most laughingly unconvincing ever committed to celluloid. --Phil Udell
The Marilyn Monroe Story a documentary about the life and career of this much loved star narrated by director John Huston (who worked with her on ""The Misfits"") includes interviews with friends cast and crew who worked with Monroe and others who knew her clips from her films and some scenes that were cut from her earliest movies and not seen for many years.
One of Marilyn Monroe's earliest starring roles (of her ten previous films she had been uncredited in four of them) finds her playing the newspaper office receptionist Iris. The paper is run by Blake Washburn who has just been defeated in a bid for re-election to the state senate and uses the paper to ruffle big business.
In the 1950s Irving Klaw the 'King of Pin-up' was famous for his photos of beautiful girls in lingerie and high heels. In the early 50s he began filming the girls producing over a hundred short 8mm films. Bettie Page personified the sexually dominant enchantress and her bondage and dancing films launched a devoted following. This collection of Klaw's Bettie Page films show the legendary pin-up at her finest while the dancing films showcase pin-ups including Donna 'Buxom' Brown Honey Baer and Trudy Wayne performing their sultry stripteases.
Set in the slums of Kingston, Jamaica, Dancehall Queen is a hugely enjoyable melodrama featuring a resourceful heroine, spectacularly slimy villains and a lot of very loud music. Street vendor Marcia (Audrey Reid) is under pressure from all directions--family friend Larry has made her dependent on his good will before putting sexual pressure on her teenage daughter while street thug Priest has killed a friend for minding her patch and is now trying to push his way into her bed. What is attractive about this film is that Marcia wins by playing to her strengths: she goes back to the wild-child dirty dancing she loved before having her children and becomes Mystery Lady, a contender for cash prizes in competition. Most of the film's occasional touches of wild comedy come from her attempts to keep this from her rather staid daughter and the ease with which, from behind silver foil fringes and jewelled nose-chains, she can take revenge on the men who mess with her quieter persona. This is a surprisingly classy little movie, whose rawness comes across as urgency: e en those of us who miss half the patois dialogue can't help but respond to its fizzy energy. On the DVD The DVD has digitally re-mastered music, the usual chapter index, a Web link and what is called "Hyperactive DVDROM" content which means it is very, very flashy and very, very loud. --Roz Kaveney
San Francisco has been the setting of a lot of exciting movie car chases over the years, but this 1968 police thriller is still the one to beat when it comes to high-octane action on the steep hills of the city by the Bay. The outstanding car chase earned an Oscar for best editing, but the rest of the movie is pretty good, too. Bullitt is a perfect star vehicle for cool guy Steve McQueen, who stars as a tenacious detective (is there any other kind?) determined to track down the killers of the star witness in an important trial. Director Peter Yates (Breaking Away) approached the story with an emphasis on absolute authenticity, using a variety of San Francisco locations. Jacqueline Bisset and Robert Duvall appear in early roles, and Robert Vaughn plays the criminal kingpin who pulls the deadly strings of the tightly wound plot. --Jeff Shannon

The word 'cop' isn't written all over him - something more puzzling is. In one of his most memorable roles Steve McQueen stars as Detective Frank Bullitt a hard-driving tough-as-nails San Francisco cop. Bullitt has just received what sounds like a routine assignment: keep a star witness out of sight and out of danger for 48 hours then deliver him to the courtroom on Monday morning. But before the night is out the witness will lie dying of shotgun wounds and Bullitt a no-glitter all-guts cop won't rest until he nabs the gunmen and the elusive underworld kingpin who hired them. Famed for it's Lalo Schifrin score and one of the greatest car chases in cinema-history 'Bullit' won the 1969 Oscar for Best Film Editing (Frank P. Keller).
