  • Surf Crazy [1959]Surf Crazy | DVD | (23/03/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

The second film by the grandfather of surf films, Bruce Brown, Surf Crazy focuses on a surfing trip to Mexico in 1959, a time when surfing was so obscure that most of the Mexicans encountered along the Pacific shoreline had no idea why the crazy young Americans had long wooden boards strapped to the roof of their cars. The big problem with being a pioneer is that the subjects of Brown's film couldn't ask anyone where the good surfing spots were, so much of the film consists of the Americans riding rough unmarked roads in search of worthwhile waves. Brown appears on camera to explain that when this film was first shown in venues around California, he would appear onstage and narrate it. And a recording of his original narration, full of jokes both quirky and corny, accompanies the colour film footage in this version. The film itself sometimes shows its age, as scratches flicker past, but the colour is vibrant and the footage of surfers in an utterly pristine environment is often riveting. The second half of the film took Brown and his trusty camera to Hawaii, where surfers hit the waves at gorgeous Waimea Bay. Surf Crazy captures a beautiful golden era in the history of surfing, and even those who have never stepped on a board will find it very entertaining. --Robert J McNamara, Amazon.com

The Vienna version of Alceste was Gluck's second reform opera after Orfeo ed Euridice. The libretto and music revolve around a self-sacrificing main character, and it is quite probable that the courageous bearing of Empress Maria Theresia while mourning her husband provided Gluck with the impetus for this material.Alceste is reminiscent of Beethoven's subsequent Fidelio as a pure anthem to conjugal love. As Orfeo before it, Alceste did not achieve major success at the first performance of the Vienna version on 20 December 1767, but instead became widely-known when performed as a tragedie opera nine years later in Paris, after the addition of ballet music in French, the version we see performed here. This production from 2006 was acclaimed as the Opera Production of the Year, by German magazine Opernwelt. The title role is played by Catherine Naglestad, voted Female Opera Singer of the Year 2006.

A model for dozens of action films to follow, this box-office hit from 1967 refined a die-hard formula that has become overly familiar, but it's rarely been handled better than it was in this action-packed World War II thriller. Lee Marvin is perfectly cast as a down-but-not-out army major who is offered a shot at personal and professional redemption. If he can successfully train and discipline a squad of army rejects, misfits, killers, prisoners, and psychopaths into a first-rate unit of specialised soldiers, they'll earn a second chance to make up for their woeful misdeeds. Of course, there's a catch: to obtain their pardons, Marvin's band of badmen must agree to a suicide mission that will parachute them into the danger zone of Nazi-occupied France. It's a hazardous path to glory, but the men have no other choice than to accept and regain their lost honor. What makes The Dirty Dozen special is its phenomenal cast including Charles Bronson, Donald Sutherland, Telly Savalas, George Kennedy, Ernest Borgnine, John Cassavetes, Richard Jaeckel, Jim Brown, Clint Walker, Trini Lopez, Robert Ryan, and others. Cassavetes is the Oscar-nominated standout as one of Marvin's most rebellious yet heroic men, but it's the whole ensemble--combined with the hard-as-nails direction of Robert Aldrich--that makes this such a high-velocity crowd pleaser. The script by Nunnally Johnson and Lukas Heller (from the novel by E.M. Nathanson) is strong enough to support the all-star lineup with ample humour and military grit, so if you're in need of a mainline jolt of testosterone, The Dirty Dozen is the movie for you. --Jeff Shannon
