Remember Candyman, Bernard Rose's fine 1993 urban-legend horror movie based on Clive Barker's screenplay? How about Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh, the inevitable but actually halfway decent second bite at the cherry? Well, in the time-honoured tradition of sequels having less to do with the original with every step down the filmic food chain, the third instalment in the saga of the hook-handed bogeyman had no input from Barker, contains no creepy Phillip Glass score and has no real connection to either of its predecessors in terms of plot. That is unless you count the goon of the title (Tony Todd), returning from whatever ethereal plane he usually resides in to put the wind up his--wait for it--great, great grandaughter, slack-jawed LA art gallery owner Caroline McKeever (Donna D'Errico, hitherto best known for her work on Baywatch). Desperate to claim her soul so he can have a spot of companionship throughout the long days of eternity, Todd promptly sets about slicing and dicing various unfortunate Angelenos, making sure his last living relative gets the blame each and every time. Headed straight for the chair, can D'Errico save LA, and herself, from her heinous ancestor? And, more to the point, can she do so while walking and chewing gum at the same time? Dependent on huge amounts of viscera and its female lead's willingness to shed her clothes, this cheap knock-off still conjures the up the odd moment of unsettling gloom, while Todd is as reliably hammy as ever. All the same, you can't help hoping this is definitely, positively the last time round the block for the franchise: whatever you do, don't stand in front of any mirrors chanting "Candyman 4, Candyman 4, Candyman 4". The results will be horrific. --Danny Leigh

Linda Fiorentino is like a home-grown apocalyptic nightmare in The Last Seduction as the sizzling, sexy dame who thinks "sharing" is a dirty word. Fiorentino, a master of the double-cross, hooks up with naive Peter Berg, a nice guy desperate for a little adventure. There are endless twists to this cleverly vicious story, but the real draw is Fiorentino, whose performance is brilliant. She is the everywoman you never want to meet: cool as ice, passionate, tough, self-satisfied, smart, and amoral. Bill Pullman is a surprise as a Machiavellian doctor who is almost her match. Definitely not a date flick, as this represents one vicious battle in the sex wars. --Rochelle O'Gorman

By the end of the 1960s the boom in Old World gothic horror had begun to wane in the face of present day terrors like the Vietnam War. In response, American filmmakers brought horror out of the past and into the present, and the classic movie monsters packed their bags and headed for the New World.Count Yorga, Vampire was among the first to successfully transpose the classic vampire, cloak and all, to a modern day setting as the Countplayed unforgettably by Robert Quarryarrives in the United States and settles in a Southern California mansion with his mysterious brides. A drive-in favorite from the moment it was released, a sequel soon followed. The Return of Count Yorga ups the ante and sees the sardonic Count on the streets of San Francisco, his sights set on an orphanage as a potential source of sustenance.Director Bob Kelljan (Scream Blacula Scream) delivers a one-two punch of classic cult cinema mixing chills, thrills, style, and suspense with a knowing wit that revels in the genre trappings. Disney's 50th full-length animated feature film, Tangled is a visually appealing, music-filled adventure full of romance and humor. The film focuses on Rapunzel, a girl with long magical hair who's lived her entire life imprisoned in a tower by her greedy mother. Naturally optimistic and acquiescent, Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) rarely complains about her circumstances, but for her 18th birthday she longs to leave the tower to see the floating lights that appear every year on her birthday. Her mother (Donna Murphy) refuses her request, but when thief Flynn Ryder (Zachary Levi) climbs the tower to escape his pursuers, Rapunzel (once she's conked him on the head with a frying pan multiple times) impulsively decides to trust the young man and convinces him to help her escape to see the floating lights. Thus begins a journey that alternates quite schizophrenically between optimistic excitement and guilty remorse that will ultimately change Rapunzel's and Flynn's lives forever. Tangled is a masterful blend of humour, adventure, passion and drama combined with a great musical score and top-notch animation. The 3-D effects add to the experience but probably won't be missed in other formats. Best of all, Disney presents a princess who matures from a meek and compliant girl into a spunky young woman who's not afraid to pursue her dreams and risk it all for love--now that's a Disney princess worth emulating. • Out Of Sight [1998]Out Of Sight | DVD | (22/09/2002) from £5.54   |  Saving you £10.45 (188.63%)   |  RRP £15.99

Out of Sight was one of the best movies of 1998 but ironically this superior crime comedy was a box-office disappointment. Fortunately the movie can enjoy a long life on home video and DVD, where it can be savoured by anyone who missed its original release. Making one of his strongest films since his 1989 debut Sex, Lies, and Videotape and his recent hit Erin Brockovich, director Steven Soderbergh pays tribute to the signature wit and intricacy of Elmore Leonard's novel, brilliantly adapted by Scott Frank, the gifted screenwriter who previously adapted Leonard's Get Shorty. The movie is primarily a showcase for the talent and chemistry of George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez, respectively playing a career bank robber who has escaped from jail and the federal agent who falls for his charms while tracking him down. Soderbergh directs with confident visual flair, shifting timelines (à la Pulp Fiction) to weave together subplots and maintain vivid focus on Leonard's splendid characters and smooth-as-silk dialogue. While the sexy repartée between Clooney and Lopez recalls the vintage interplay of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, Ving Rhames and Steve Zahn add ample comic relief as Clooney's accomplices. Dennis Farina is memorable as Lopez's father and Albert Brooks is almost unrecognisable as a Wall Street crook whose mansion--and a cache of uncut diamonds--provides the setting for the film's climactic caper. As orchestrated by Soderbergh, the film offers a feast of plot twists and surprises but it never loses track of its delightful characters and the clever wit that brings them so vividly to life. --Jeff Shannon
