Two parts family melodrama one part Chinese nationalist history. An unseen narrarator weaves the tale of his grandmother a poor rural Chinese girl sold into marriage to a leprous winemaker. After her husband's death the grandmother transforms the winery into a idyllic community of productive laborers only to have her progress thwarted by the invading Japanese.
As he comes of age Ah Ming must begin a life of endless labour to bring sacred water to his family. Forced into an arranged marriage with a young girl from a neighbouring village he must forsake his true love Ah Shui. Unable to cope with the harsh routine that each villager must endure his wife leaves Ah Ming never to return and the long suffering Ah Shui steps forth to care for Ah Ming and his ailing mother sharing their pain and grief. Life takes a turn for the better when the government renews their work on canals and dams that will bring water directly to the village thus ensuring a better future for everyone but tragedy once again rears its ugly head for Ah Ming and his family.
