But due to congress' successful investigation which directly implicated Nixon in the cover-up the feat of impeachment forces him to resign. On the night before his resignation the fallen president asks a stunned Henry Kissinger his secretary of state to kneel down beside him and pray. Struggling with mental anguish and helplessness he knew there was no chance to escape his ultimate fate.

Both Dewhurst and Flanders won Tony Awards for their performances.
