  • U2 - Elevation 2001 - Live In BostonU2 - Elevation 2001 - Live In Boston | DVD | (26/11/2001) from £14.29   |  Saving you £3.70 (20.60%)   |  RRP £17.99

After the huge lavish spectacles of previous tours, U2 decided to tone things down a bit for Elevation, which accompanied their All That You Can't Leave Behind album. Just as the album marked a return to a simpler more stripped-down sound, so the live shows did away with the glitter-ball lemons and huge stadiums, returning to smaller venues and all-together more intimate shows. From the small stage with its heart-shaped walkway, and a minimum of special effects, the emphasis is on the music, and from start to finish Elevation provides a welcome reminder of what a great band U2 are. Recorded in Boston, the show features a healthy mixture of new and old tracks, which--considering they were written over the course of two decades--sound as fresh and relevant as ever. From classics such as "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "Where the Streets Have No Name" and "I Will Follow" right up to instant favourites such as "Beautiful Day" and "Elevation", every track is stunningly executed. If you saw the concerts, this is a worthy lasting souvenir, if you didn't, watch this recording and you'll be kicking yourself that you didn't go. On the DVD: With the full concert on the first disc, the second one contains a wealth of superb extras. For starters there's the "Another Perspective", which enables you to watch the concert from alternative points of view--the "Fancam" (from the heart of the crowd ensconced within the heart-shaped walkway) and the "Directorcam" (from the production office where director Hamish Hamilton creates his masterpiece). There's also a Road Movie, which gives a time-lapse photography look behind the scenes of a day on the road, and an insight into how to turn an empty, cold impersonal indoor arena into an intimate, spectacular concert venue. It also includes some alternative live takes of some of the key tracks from the album, including a fantastic performance of "Beautiful Day" from the rooftops of Dublin. With the concert offered in a choice of sound ratios (Dolby 5.1, PCM Stereo) the songs sound even greater. As concert DVDs go, Elevation is a definite benchmark. --Helen Marquis

At the dawn of the 90s, tensions in the U2 camp were fraught. The band fought about the direction they should take for their next project having received some harsh criticism for the backward looking Rattle & Hum a couple of years before. Bono & Edge were keen to tap into Alternative Dance Music and European Industrial landscapes while Mullen and Clayton wanted to continue with the sound that had assured their success for more than a decade already. When solutions were not readily forthcoming, the band even considered splitting up. But a communal belief in the power of the group to overcome such obstacles bought U2 back from this lowest of ebbs, the result of these discrepancies allowed U2 to offer up the strongest statement they had made to date. Changing the entire musical background in which they existed - it may be unfashionable to suggest now, but without this pivotal album laying a fair bit of groundwork for alternative music generally, it would be doubtful if the likes of Radiohead and Coldplay would have achieved quite so much - U2 had triumphed. Recognised today as one of the greatest albums ever produced, the first film in this two disc set looks back at the development, production, reception and aftermath of Achtung Baby and features interviews with the band and those closest to them, plus a host of other features making this programme the finest document yet to chart the album that saved U2 from extinction But this most classic of albums did nothing if not pave the way for what came in its wake, and disc two in the set covers the post-Achtung era - follow up projects, as well as their arrival in the second millennium. Over three hours in length across two discs, completed in digi-style packaging, this visual celebration of 20 years of Achtung Baby will remain the ultimate tribute to a modern classic.

Three generations of rock guitarists come together for It Might Get Loud, a 2009 documentary directed by Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth). These are not just your garden-variety guitar gods: Jimmy Page, in his mid-'60s at the time of the film, founded Led Zeppelin, who dominated the 1970s following the breakup of the Beatles. As a member of U2, 48-year-old David Evans, better known as the Edge, created one of the most distinctive and influential sounds of the past quarter century. And 34-year-old Jack White (of the White Stripes, the Raconteurs, and the Dead Weather) was described by one music publication as "the most significant rock 'n' roll figure of the past ten years." Guggenheim, who followed the three around for the better part of a year, takes us into their individual lives, past and present. There are shots of Page as a young London session musician, with the Yardbirds and Zeppelin, at Headley Grange (the estate where much of the fourth Zep album was made), and at home with his record collection. The Edge takes us to the Dublin classroom where U2 first rehearsed, as well as to the practice room he uses now (never a virtuoso soloist, he developed a style based on texture and a mind-boggling array of effects); and White, whose insistence on authenticity is admirable but perhaps a tad self-conscious, constructs a "guitar" from a plank of wood, a piece of wire, and a Coke bottle (he also plays a recording by the primitive bluesman Son House, featuring just voice and handclaps, that White says is still his biggest inspiration). The three also converge on a Hollywood sound stage, where they chat and a do a little jamming on Zep's "In My Time of Dying" (with all three playing slide guitar) and the Band's "The Weight." It's hard to say if the film's appeal will extend beyond guitar freaks and fans of these particular bands, but at the very least, It Might Get Loud offers some interesting insight into the soul and inspiration behind some of pop's best and most popular music. --Sam Graham
