Nice concept, shaky execution--that about sums up the mixed blessings of British actor Peter Howitt's intelligent but forgivably flawed debut as a writer-director. It's got more emotional depth than most frothy romantic comedies and its central idea--the parallel tracking of two possible destinies for a young London professional played by Gwyneth Paltrow--is full of involving possibilities. It's essentially a what-if scenario with Helen (Paltrow) at the centre of two slightly but significantly different romantic trajectories, one involving her two-timing boyfriend (John Lynch)and the other with an amiable chap (John Hannah) who represents a happier outcome. That's the film's basic problem, however: the two scenarios are so romantically unbalanced (one guy's a total cad, the other charmingly sincere) that Helen inadvertently comes off looking foolish and needlessly confused. Still, this remains a pleasant experiment and Howitt's dialogue is witty enough to keep things entertaining. It's also a treat for Paltrow fans; not only does the svelte actress handle a British accent without embarrassing herself but she gets to play two subtle variations of the same character, sporting different wardrobes and hairstyles in a role that plays into her glamorous off-screen persona. --Jeff Shannon
Hugely Successful sit-com that ran for 8 years, from 1985 to 1992, the sequel to Till Death Do Us Part. Written by Johnny Speight, it follows the fortunes (or mis-fortunes) of bigoted pensioner Alf Garnet, played brilliantly by Warren Mitchell. We see Alf uprooted from his Wapping home and re-located to a West Ham council flat and follow all the drama and problems he brings upon himself by his very opinionated and controversial views on.. well, everything.

Robert Crumb is known for his disturbing, yet compelling, underground cartoons: his most famous works made counter-cultural icons out of Mr. Natural ("Keep on Truckin'...") and Fritz the Cat. Terry Zwigoff delves into the odd world of the cartoonist in his documentary film Crumb, and the picture that emerges is not always pretty--at moments, it's almost repellent--but it's a fascinating glimpse into a very strange mind. Interviewing immediate family--Crumb has one suicidal brother, one semi-psychopathic brother, two sisters who declined to be interviewed and a tyrannical mother--Crumb begins to look a bit saner. Given his surroundings, it's remarkable that he has survived so well. His hostilities toward women may turn some viewers off but his wife, Aline, seems to be a grounding point and she provides a solid counterbalance to the man. No one shies away from discussing incredibly intimate things (namely, sex!), which explains much of R. Crumb's cartoons. This documentary can definitely be considered a masterpiece for the cult crowd and, as for the rest of us, it's sure to make us feel a little better about our own lives! --Jenny Brown
Get ready to get even luckier in this Fruity Edition of the hit comedy on Blu-ray Disc and DVD now. This is the extended version and includes all kind of naughty stuff that was deemed too rude to show in cinemas...
Duchess and her three kittens are enjoying the high life with their devoted human mistress until the wicked butler Edgar, with his eyes on a big inheritance, decides to dope them and get them out of the picture. How can these fragile creatures cope in the unfamiliar countryside and the meaner streets of Paris? Only by meeting the irrepressible alley cat O'Malley, a rough diamond with romance in his heart. After they get a taste of the wide dangerous world, he guides them home, and Edgar gets his just desserts at the wrong end of a horse. As always, it's really the voices rather than the animation that are the heart of the Disney magic: Phil Harris is brilliant as O'Malley, Eva Gabor as Duchess is ... well ... Eva Gabor; but perhaps the most memorable turns are by Pat Buttram and George Lindsay, who turn the old hounds Napoleon and Lafayette into a couple of bumbling Southern-fried rednecks. Their scenes with Edgar, and the musical numbers with Scat Cat and his cool-dude band, are classic. Most striking about seeing The Aristocats now is how deeply Disney's style of animation has changed since this was at the cutting edge in 1970. Perhaps the nostalgic, dated feel are just a result of being plonked down in Belle Epoque Paris, but the illustrations are fussier (a pity) and the animation and overall pace much less frenetic (sometimes a relief) than in more recent efforts such as Aladdin. --Richard Farr
Monteverdi's 'Vespers Of The Blessed Virgin' performed by the Monteverdi Chior and The English Baroque Soloists. Standing out among the excellent soloists like Ann Monoyious Michael Chance Mark Tucker and Alistaire Miles is the young Bryn Terfel. The archiecture of St. Mark's Venice is used to spectacular advantage with singers and their accompanists isolated at some distance from the main chior and orchestra.
The classic 1960s and early 70s comedy series Til Death Us Do Part had established Warren Mitchell's bigoted big-mouth Alf Garnett as one of the most unforgettable figures of British television. Too good a character to leave to posterity his creator Johnny Speight brought him back - as opinionated loud-mouthed bad tempered reactionary prudish homophobic and hilarious as ever... This 1985 sequel found Alf and Else relocated to a flat in the East End but the curmudgeonly old git still had plenty to moan about: his pension the unions having to push his wheelchair bound wife around and horror upon horror their black and gay council home help Winston.
