A 17th Century tale of how a peasant gave his life to save the Tsar for the Russian people. After the Russian Revolution the Communist regime renamed the opera Ivan Susanin after the main character and altered the libretto in order to emphasise how Susanin delivered Russia from attack from the Polish enemy. The original title and libretto have now been restored. In this production by The Bolshoi Opera filmed in 1992 Russian bass Egveny Nesterenko magnificently sings the dramatic role of Ivan Susanin the tragic hero who leads the Polish enemy on a false path in their search for the Tsar and so allowing the Tsar to escape. The cast also includes Marina Mescheriakova as Susanin's daughter Antonida Alexander Lomonosov as her fiance Sobinin and Elena Zaremba as Susanin's son Vanja. The conductor is Alexander Lazarev.

St-Petersburg 1874. Composer Modest Mussorgsky is present at the premiere of his opera Boris Godunov. The curtain opens and the performance begins. After the death of Czar Fyodor and enormous crowd has gathered before the Kremlin gate. Incited by boyars the crowd implores Boris Godunov to accept the throne. Boris agrees though he knows that the crown is spattered with the blood of Czaravitch Dimitri an heir to the throne murdered earlier at Gounov's secret order. At the same time in a monastery monk Pimen is about to finish his historical manuscript. Asked by the young novice Grigori about Dimitri's mysterious death Pimen reveals to him the truth about Godunov's involvement. Deeply affected by the monks tale Grigori soon flees to Lithuania. In the Kremlin Godunov feels increasingly lonely as he is haunted by the visions of the murdered Czarevitch. Prince Shuysky informs him that someone who claims to be Czarevitch Dimitri is heading for Moscow to take over the throne. In fact this is the escaped novice Grigori who has become an impostor in order to win the heart of the Polish beauty Marina Mniszek.
