Woody Allen's 1982 homage to Bergman and Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy is a delight from start to finish and must rate as one of his most joyous films. The period setting--Edwardian up state New York--gives the whole thing a misty, elegiac quality. Part Midsummer Night's Dream (the magic supplied by visions through a spirit glass) and part Smiles of a Summer Night (Bergman's source material provides the basic plot and ensuing couplings), it's a gentle satire on male sexuality and frustration. Allen handles the angst with the lightest of touches. He plays a Wall Street broker who spends his holidays inventing flying machines (they work, with telling consequences). He and his wife (Mary Steenburgen) are increasingly depressed by their ailing sex life. Cue the arrival of weekend guests: crusty academic (Jose Ferrer) and beautiful blue-stocking fiancée previously in love with Allen (Mia Farrow, of course); and insatiable doctor (Tony Roberts) with his latest squeeze, a nurse (the excellent Julie Hagerty). Eighty minutes of unravelling, discovery and renewal follow, accompanied by a Mendelssohn sound track. This is one of Allen's most treasurable pictures. On the DVD: A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy is presented in widescreen that recaptures the pleasure which greeted the setting of this most pastoral of Allen's films on its first release; it really does glow with summery light. The standard stereo soundtrack is perfectly acceptable. Extras include the original theatrical trailer and multiple language soundtracks.--Piers Ford

In 1996, composer, producer, and guitar legend Ry Cooder entered Egrem Studios in Havana with the forgotten greats of Cuban music, many of them in their 60s and 70s, some of them long since retired. The resulting album, Buena Vista Social Club, became a Grammy-winning international bestseller. When Cooder returned to Havana in 1998 to record a solo album by 72-year-old vocalist Ibrahim Ferrer, filmmaker Wim Wenders was on hand to document the occasion. Wenders splits the film between portraits of the performers, who tell their stories directly to the camera as they wander the streets and neighbourhoods of Havana, and a celebration of the music heard in performance scenes in the studio, in their first concert in Amsterdam, and in their second and final concert at Carnegie Hall. The songs are too often cut short in this fashion, but Buena Vista Social Club is not a concert film. Wenders weaves the artist biographies with a glimpse of modern Cuba remembering its past, capturing a lost culture in music that is suddenly, unexpectedly revived for audiences in Havana and around the world. Wenders makes his presence practically invisible, as if his directorial flourishes or off-screen narration might deflect attention from the artists, who do a fine job of telling their own stories through interviews and music. It's a loving portrait of a master class in Cuban music, with a vital cast of ageing performers whose energy and passion belie their years. --Sean Axmaker

Maurice Ravel's one-act operas L'Enfant et les Sortil''ges and L'Heure Espagnole are often performed as a double bill. These two productions for Glyndebourne Festival Opera were first recorded and seen on BBC TV in 1987 and are both designed by the great American children's book writer and illustrator Maurice Sendak and directed by Frank Corsaro. L'Enfant et les Sortil''ges or 'The bewitched child' is an enchanting fantasy which tells the tale of a boy who is angry because he does not want to learn his lessons. He destroys his books and vandalises the room he is in. But the room comes to life - chairs grandfather clock teapot and teacup - and seeks revenge... The staging of this production featured film projection and this has been brilliantly reflected in the electronically-edited television recording. Cynthia Buchan sings the role of the boy and the cast also includes Fiona Kimm Malcolm Walker Fran''ois Loup Hyacinth Nicholls Thierry Dran Louise Winter Nan Christie Jady Pearl Carol Smith Harolyn Blackwell Anna Steiger and Alison Hagley. Simon Rattle conducts The London Philharmonic. L'Heure Espagnole means not only 'the Spanish clock' but also 'the Spanish hour'; every Thursday at the same time the clockmaker Torquemada has an appointment to wind and regulate the town clocks thus leaving his wife alone in the house for an hour... The Spanish adventure is set in a Toledo square over which towers the baroque fa''ade of the town hall where Torquemada winds and minds the clocks. Maurice Sendak's delightfully animated set comprises a huge baroque fa''ade complete with working clocks and carved emblems. The cast includes Anna Steiger Fran''ois Le Roux R''my Corazza Thierry Dran and Fran''ois Loup. Sian Edwards conducts The London Philharmonic.
