The human race finds itself contemplating the dawn of a new ice age in this epic disaster starring Richard Roxburgh, Frances O'Connor, Claire Forlani, Ben Cross, Simon Callow, Patrick Bergin with Stephen Moyer and Sam Neill. The destructive effects of global warming cause unimaginable devastation and panic worldwide. It is 2020. Global warming has turned the regions of Southern Europe to desert and the Arctic polar ice cap is disappearing rapidly. There is a refugee crisis on an unprecedented scale as populations migrate north. Energy companies are turning to increasingly dangerous methods to extract what little oil is left on Earth. Environmental scientist and activist Professor Thom Archer, warns of the imminent possibility of a new ice age. His findings suggest that Halo, the corporate energy company drilling on the Greenland Glacier are causing it to melt, with alarming consequences. Archer heads to the Polar Alliance subcommittee and presents his findings to a sceptical audience, failing to convince anyone of the danger ahead. Intent on exposing Halo, Archer receives a frantic call from friend and colleague Ben Jameson and heads to the glacier. Jameson, an expert Glaciologist, claims to have found damning evidence that proves Archer's findings are correct. Arriving on the ice cap, the effects of Halo's actions are clear to see. With the realisation that the human race is under immediate threat, Archer races home to his family hoping he's not too late. The collapse of the glacier is every bit as devastating as Archer imagined. Astonishing weather patterns emerge and plunge the world's temperatures into steep decline.

  • Mississippi Burning [1989]Mississippi Burning | DVD | (17/09/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe star in Mississippi Burning, a well-intentioned and largely successful civil-rights-era thriller. Using the real-life 1964 disappearance of three civil rights workers as its inspiration, the film tells the story of two FBI men (Hackman and Dafoe, entertainingly called "Hoover Boys" by the locals) who come in to try to solve the crime. Hackman is a former small-town Mississippi sheriff himself, while Dafoe is a by-the-numbers young hotshot. (Yes, there is some tension between the two.) The movie has an interesting fatalism, as all the FBI's best efforts simply incite more and more violence--the film's message, perhaps inadvertently, seems to be that vigilantism is the only real way to get things done. The brilliant Frances McDormand, here early in her career, is not given enough to do but still does it well enough to have racked up an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. (Hackman also received a nomination for Best Actor, and the film won an Academy Award for Cinematography). Mississippi Burning is ultimately unsatisfying--it is, after all, the story of white men coming in to rescue poor blacks--but it is beautifully shot and very watchable, featuring a terrific cast playing at the top of their games. --Ali Davis, Amazon.com

  • Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael [1991]Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael | DVD | (17/09/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £6.99

In 1990, Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael showed Winona Ryder as cinema's top teenage role model. Her edge was a delinquency-equals-sympathy angle that held true throughout Beetlejuice, Mermaids, Heathers and Edward Scissorhands. Here as Dinky Bossetti she's chasing the ghosts of a past no one can explain. She's adopted; her town of Clyde, Ohio is mysteriously stuck in the 1950s; but weirder still is everyone's fixation with the imminent return of once-famous homecoming girl Roxy Carmichael. Dinky's school peers conform to the John Hughes 80s look and mindset, but it's the retro adult population that really winds her up. Jeff Daniels ought to be a perfectly conditioned suburbanite, but can't get over having once been married to Roxy. Imparting the secret that they'd had a child and given it away, Dinky's own confusions and obsessions suddenly make sense. The tangle of B-plots are given purpose at the same time she is. Her silent admirer (Thomas Wilson Brown) is able to approach her at last, and her school guidance counsellor becomes the friend she's never had. Ultimately the story's about the notion that no teenager ever feels like they fit in. Of course the real problem facing Ryder, Dinky and any viewer is that all teens grow up. What then? On the DVD: This is a bare-bones package with a simple two-channel stereo and 16:9 anamorphic ratio transfer. That said, it looks and sounds just fine. There's only one trailer, but someone's tried with the diner-style menu at least. --Paul Tonks

Can they find a way to overcome their differences and live happily ever after? Bridget Jones's Diary: In the screen adaptation of 'Bridget Jones's Diary' Helen Fielding's international best-selling phenomenon documentary filmmaker Sharon Maguire has managed a rare feat: a film as captivating as the novel! Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) is a pretty and neurotic thirtysomething singleton (in her vernacular) who vows to take control of her life after being humiliated by handsome standoffish barrister Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at her parents' New Year's party. Determined to lose weight and cut back on vices like wine cigarettes and workaholic-alcoholic-misogynistic men Bridget begins a diary to chart her progress. Unfortunately the P.R. executive hits a snag when her boss gorgeous cad Daniel (Hugh Grant) instigates a sexy e-mail flirtation. Despite her tendency to bungle book launch parties and any situation involving the ever-disapproving Mark Darcy Bridget's winning combination of charm vulnerability and wit intrigues not only the seductively dangerous Daniel but also the arrogant barrister. Featuring a note-perfect performance by Zellweger a devilish one by Grant and the inspired casting of Firth (the object of Bridget's lusty fantasies in the book) 'Bridget Jones Diary' is a clever delightful romantic comedy guaranteed to please old fans and win new ones.
