One of Ridley Scott's most wrong-headed films, this one (like all of his movies) looks fabulous and sounds utterly ridiculous, almost from the beginning. His first mistake was casting the wonderful Gerard Dépardieu as Columbus and forcing him to speak English, which Dépardieu does with decided difficulty. After spending far too much time on the ocean with Columbus' three ships (you wish they would sail over the edge of the world), they arrive in the West Indies, only to turn around and sail back. The rest of the film deals with the not particularly comprehensible politics of Columbus' venture, which leads to the violent slaughter of trusting natives by a band of cardboard villains. This version of Jason and the Argonauts is not a remake of the classic 1963 Ray Harryhausen feature, but a new re-telling of the Greek legend. It takes just as many liberties with the saga, but--with a running time twice as long as the original--it packs in much more of the story, building to an exciting finale filled with betrayal, retribution and copious sword-play. Made by mini-series specialists Hallmark, who also produced a lavish version of Homer's The Odyssey (1997), only the rapid fades where the commercial breaks would be really give away the fact that this is a TV feature. The multinational cast is variable, and while Jason London is unhappily wooden in the title role, such stars as Denis Hopper and Frank Langella are good value, American accents aside. Coming straight from the big screen sword and sandal epic, Gladiator, Derek Jacobi adds sheer class, while Jolene Blalock makes a breathtaking debut as Medea. The visual atmosphere is strong; the superb cinematography varying between lush beauty and the stark, sun-bleached look of Pitch Black. Production values are excellent, with several increasingly powerful and spectacular action set-pieces incorporating outstanding (for TV) CGI effects, the whole being immeasurably lifted by British composer Simon Boswell's splendid musical score.--Gary S. Chalk this one up as something that seemed like a good idea at the time. Frank Langella had just taken Broadway by storm in a revival of the play based on Bram Stoker's classic vampire novel. He was tall, elegant, and almost painfully romantic--all qualities that failed to translate to this garish, tarted-up film version. The story remains the same, if told in greater length than in Bela Lugosi's version. The film even offered Laurence Olivier as vampire-hunter Van Helsing (in one of several roles he played during the period that required a middle-European accent) and a young Kate Nelligan as the woman whose love (and blood) Dracula most wants. But director John Badham, working from W.D. Richter's clunky script, makes a hash of most of it, relying on special effects to do the heavy lifting. --Marshall Fine
