One of David Cronenberg's most successful early films, Rabid features porn star Marilyn Chambers as a woman who becomes infected with a virus after an operation. As result she grows a kind of phallus with which she penetrates her victims as she sucks their blood and thus the disease spreads rapidly. The film displays all Cronenberg's usual horrified fascination with the human body and its sexual function. Looking back, it can be read as a kind of parable about AIDS, but it works perfectly well as an effective low-budget shocker. On the DVD: the widescreen image on the DVD is acceptable quality, as is the sound. The fairly routine extras consist of excerpts from a TV interview with Cronenberg, lasting about 10 minutes; a collection of stills from the film; some written notes by horror expert Kim Newman that give useful background, though in part reproduce what is said in the interview; full filmographies for Cronenberg and the three principal performers, including a long list of Chambers' porn credits. --Ed Buscombe

  • Ocean's Eleven - The Documentary [2000]Ocean's Eleven - The Documentary | DVD | (18/02/2002) from £17.97   |  Saving you £-4.99 (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

Released to coincide with Steven Soderbergh's classy remake, The Ocean's Eleven Story is a fascinating American television documentary that sets the original Ocean's Eleven film in its historical context. Despite the opportunistic title, the film itself only constitutes part of the story and is featured in only the briefest of clips--none of which include any dialogue. Despite this--and the rather shoddy nature of the interview footage--there is still enough excellent archive material and interesting stories to make The Ocean's Eleven Story a worthwhile proposition. Placing the film in the context of the whole "Rat Pack" period, the documentary also looks at the role of Sinatra and company in the political rise of the Kennedy clan, the involvement of the Mafia and their heady days in Las Vegas. It also focuses on the individual lives of the five principal members--Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop--and is particularly poignant with regard to Davis, who was treated as a god on stage but with utter contempt off it. This is maybe not the greatest piece of documentary film making ever made, but with a subject this engaging it would be difficult to fail. On the DVD: Despite the quality of much of the material involved (particularly the film of the Rat Pack performing in Las Vegas), there is a rather rushed feel to the release. DVD extras are minimal, featuring merely some dated TV footage and some equally odd trailers for other films starring the five. --Phil Udell

It’s not always that a stage play translates particularly well to the medium of movies. But for anyone considering such a challenge in the future, Frost/Nixon is surely a fine template to follow. In the capable hands of director Ron Howard, the extraordinary story of how a then-fairly low profile television interviewer managed to bring the disgraced former President of the United States to account is, at best, absolutely riveting.Much of the reason for this is the two leading performances, which are both absolutely exception. The awards attention for Frost/Nixon has been directed towards Frank Langella, and truly he’s an actor long overdue some recognition. Here, as ex-President Nixon, he’s flat-out brilliant: a complex, intriguing character portrayed with real measure and expertise. It’s unfair, though, that Michael Sheen has been overlooked by some. Fresh from portraying Tony Blair in The Queen, Sheen is once more brilliant here, injecting Frost with an erratic, on-the-edge fallibility that sets up the film’s final act extremely well. Now you can argue, with some right, that Frost/Nixon flattens out some of the facts to its own liking, and certainly the portrayal of David Frost doesn’t seem to do the man too many favours. But when it gets to the interviews themselves, it’s electric, and proof that you don’t need a bunch of effects and flashy gimmicks to keep you on the edge of your seat. Ron Howard has done this to us before with a true story, in the shape of Apollo 13, and here again, even though we know the ending, the journey there is quite brilliant. You really can make compelling drama with just two people sat in a chair… --Simon Brew Stills from Frost/Nixon Michael Sheen stars as journalist David Frost Kevin Bacon stars as Richard Nixon's aide Jack Brennan Michael Sheen and Rebecca Hall Frank Langella works with director Ron Howard A scene in which David Frost visits Richard Nixon’s home The superb supporting cast including Sam Rockwell, Oliver Platt and Matthew Macfadyen
