  • Sophia LorenSophia Loren | DVD | (17/10/2005) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £49.99

A bumper box set of classic films featuring the voluptuous sex-siren Sophia Loren! Pride And The Passion (Dir. Stanley Kramer 1957): Napoleonic forces are sweeping across Europe and Spain is on the brink of falling to the mighty invasion. Standing alone against the onslaught is one brave fighter and his ragtag band of guerillas. Seizing a gigantic cannon Spanish fighter Miguel (Sinatra) plans to attack Napoleon's army by battering the walls of French-occupied Avila. But because he's untrained in complex weaponry he must rely on the expertise of Captain Trumbell (Grant) a British naval officer. Allies on the battlefield Trumbell and Miguel soon find themselves in a bitter struggle over Miguel's mistress (Loren) a sultry beauty drawn to the captain's refined ways even as they race toward the most harrowing battle of their lives... El Cid (Dir. Anthony Mann 1961): El Cid is an epic movie masterpiece a tribute to one of history's greatest legends. This dazzling spectacle with a cast of thousands fills the screen with action and romance - from knights in armour jousting on horseback to massive battles on sea and land where columns of warriors stretch across the horizon. At the centre of this powerful motion picture is Charlton Heston in the role he was born to play... the immortal El Cid. Heston is the Spanish warrior battling to drive the Moors from Spain with the vision to be just and the courage to be merciful whose love and devotion to the radiant Chimene (Sophia Loren) knows no bounds... Anthony Mann's epic was nominated for three Oscars but surprisingly returned home empty-handed. The Fall Of The Roman Empire (Dir. Anthony Mann 1964): This classic film re-enacts the spectacular collapse of perhaps the greatest dominion the world has ever known. Pestilence greed and corruption bring a once-proud empire to its knees. Now restored with stunning scenes and a cast of thousands - in battles gladiatorial and otherwise; martyrs burning at the stake; chariot races in the midst of which is the romance between two people.... White Sister (Dir. Alberto Lattuada 1972): The Key (Dir. Carol Reed 1958): In wartime England circa 1941 poorly-armed tugs are sent into U-Boat Alley to rescue damaged Allied ships. An American named David Ross arrives to captain one of these tugs. He's given a key by a fellow tugboat-man -- a key to an apartment and its pretty female resident. Should something happen to the friend Ross can use the key. Countess From Hong Kong (Dir. Charlie Chaplin 1966): Charlie Chaplin's final film is a delightful romantic comedy filled with the clever touches for which he's famous. Written directed and composed by Chaplin it revolves around Russian ''migr'' countess Natascha (Sophia Loren) forced into prostitution in Hong Kong who stows away in wealthy American Ogden's (Marlon Brando's) stateroom to blackmail her way to the States. Since Ogden has a mind of his own and can even resist Natascha's charms what follows is one of the funniest tugs of war ever devised! A wealth of talent supports these stars. There's Chaplin's son Sydney as Brando's cruise companion Tippi Hedren as his icy wife Patrick Cargill as the ultimate gentleman's gentleman and Margaret Rutherford as a dotty old dame. Chaplin himself tops it off with a cameo as the ship's steward! The gags are pure Charlie and his actors make the most of them sailing in and out of slamming doors and outrageous situations with ease!

  • Beautiful Joe [2000]Beautiful Joe | DVD | (07/10/2002) from £5.90   |  Saving you £-2.91 (N/A%)   |  RRP £2.99

Beautiful Joe is a well-intentioned film. The problem is that it tries for both comedy and drama, and succeeds in neither. Amiable Irishman Joe (Billy Connolly), after one of the worst days imaginable, decides to leave his adopted New York home and seek adventure. Unfortunately, he runs into Hush (Sharon Stone) and gets "Far More Adventure than He Bargained For". Stone's character is the standard beautiful-but-messed-up-woman-who-needs-rescuing that is for some mystifying reason supposed to be appealing. And yes, of course she has a mute son who just might speak if only he had the right reason. Stone is "stretching" herself here, and is clearly eager to play a character: she mugs, she drawls, she wiggles and she cries. Not a scrap of scenery escapes her gullet; at times her attempts at comedy actually become sort of upsetting. Ally McBeal's Gil Bellows turns in a similarly inept and cartoonish "comic" performance. Beautiful Joe's one saving grace is Connolly, who manages to rise above his fellow cast members and the bizarre editing to turn in a charming, dignified performance. --Ali Davis, Amazon.com

Helen Mirren returns in triumph to the role that brought her international stardom, police inspector Jane Tennison, in the sixth series of Prime Suspect. Tennison finds herself being pressured to retire and responds by seizing a difficult homicide investigation: a young female Bosnian refugee has been tortured and murdered. As the trail begins to suggest connections to war atrocities in the Balkans, Tennison finds herself struggling with resistance from higher up, uncooperative and ambitious underlings, and deeply buried secrets. The strength of Prime Suspect has always been how it merges suspenseful detective work with an intricate grasp of police politics, and The Last Witness is no exception. The plot unfolds masterfully, the programme is directed with striking visual style, and Mirren commands the screen. Her authority in this role, honed through five previous series, is unmatchable; the richness of the character--steely, sexy, obsessive, rash, cunning--makes Prime Suspect essential viewing. --Bret Fetzer

  • Scorsese - Raging Bull/New York, New York/Boxcar Bertha/The Last Waltz/The King Of ComedyScorsese - Raging Bull/New York, New York/Boxcar Bertha/The Last Waltz/The King Of Comedy | DVD | (04/12/2006) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £34.99

A collection of films from acclaimed director Martin Scorsese. New York New York (1977): Martin Scorsese's classic musical available for the first time on DVD in this special 2 disc presentation. The day WWII ends Jimmy Doyle (Robert De Niro) an aspiring saxophonist meets and is at first rejected by singer Francine Evans (Liza Minelli). When they continue to bump into each other a friendship blossoms followed by romance and then marriage. All the while both musicians struggle to succeed at their craft which begins to put an unbearable strain on their relationship. Eventually this weight becomes too heavy to handle leading the couple into a traumatic separation. Scorsese's love of the MGM musical is clear in this sparkling hommage to a golden era of the studio's output; featuring a sensational performance from Judy Garland's daughter Liza Minnelli. The Last Waltz (1978): Director Martin Scorsese's visual and aural masterpiece captures the heart soul and spirit of an entire generation. Arguably the best concert documentary ever this is the 1976 film account of the celebratory final concert of legendary group The Band at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom. Boxcar Bertha (1972): When Bertha is orphaned she links up with a controversial leader of a union Big Bill Shelley. On the run from McCarthy type witch hunters who think Shelley is a 'red' they unwillingly become involved in underground crime escape from jail and ride boxcars on freight trains until the all powerful railroad bosses catch up with Shelley and take their revenge... The King of Comedy (1983): A joke writer who has never performed anywhere except his mother's basement Rupert Pupkin (Robert De Niro) dreams of appearing on the `The Jerry Langford Show' hosted by the king of late night talk shows Jerry Langford (Jerry Lewis). After relentlessly hounding both Jerry and the show's talent bookers to no avail he kidnaps the talk show host with the help of his accomplice Masha (Sandra Bernhard) who herself is infatuated with Jerry. Together they hold him hostage in exchange for Pupkin being given a guest spot on the show... Raging Bull (1980): Raging Bull is arguably the finest work from the Scorsese and De Niro partnership. De Niro gives an amazing portrayal of a man whose animal side lurks just beneath the surface ever ready to erupt. Vivid and unremitting in its uncompromising brutality and honesty the fight sequences are famed for their realism. Violent throughout this film is a testament to Scorsese's and De Niro skills creating a thoroughly absorbing film about such an unlikable character. Renowned for throwing himself into the roles of the character De Niro went on a diet to gain fifty pounds during the production for the role of the faded star.

  • His Girl Friday [1940]His Girl Friday | DVD | (15/03/2004) from £12.05   |  Saving you £-7.06 (N/A%)   |  RRP £4.99

His Girl Friday is one of the five greatest dialogue comedies ever made. Howard Hawks had his cast play it at breakneck speed, and audiences hyperventilate trying to finish with one laugh so they can do justice to the four that have accumulated in the meantime. Rosalind Russell, not Hawks' first choice to play Hildy Johnson--the ace newsperson whom demonic editor Walter Burns is trying to keep from quitting and getting married--is triumphant in the part, holding her own as "one of the guys" and creating an enduring feminist icon. Cary Grant's Walter Burns is a force of nature, giving a performance of such concentrated frenzy and diamond brilliance that you owe it to yourself to devote at least one viewing of the movie to watching him alone. But then you have to go back (lucky you) and watch it again for the sake of the press-room gang--Roscoe Karns, Porter Hall, Cliff Edwards, Regis Toomey, Frank Jenks, and others--the kind of ensemble work that gets character actors onto Parnassus. --Richard T Jameson, Amazon.com

Denzel Washington adopts a British accent for the grim if compelling, 1989 social drama, For Queen and Country. Akin in mood and story to several American films (notably Rolling Thunder) about Vietnam veterans who return home to face indifference or hostility, For Queen and Country stars Washington as paratrooper Reuben James, a decorated veteran of the Falklands war and Britain's occupation of Northern Ireland. Returning to civilian life in the early '80s, Reuben discovers Thatcher's England (specifically London's East End) to be an intensely racist, violent ground for class warfare, crime, and drugs. Unable to find work, hassled by white cops, pressured by old mates to run afoul of the law, and rejected by a woman (Amanda Redman) who sees him as another product of a cruel and bloody era, Reuben's hope diminishes despite efforts to do the right thing. The downbeat, predictable drama is elevated by Washington's charismatic performance. --Tom Keogh
