The new production in June 2004 was a huge success in Paris because of the illustrious cast especially Renee Fleming in the role of countess. She sung this part for the first time and impressed the audience with her exceptional voice and stage presence. She will sing the role also at the Met in 2006/07.The other singers Anne Sofie von Otter Rainer Trost Gerald Finley Dietrich Henschel and Franz Hawlata are all idiomatic and beautifully singing so that the performance was regarded as an ideal interpretation of Richard Strauss' last opera by the French press. Ulf Schirmer is a German conductor who is regularly appearing at the Paris Opera the Deutsche Oper Berlin or the Vienna State Opera and recorded the same opera with Kiri Te Kanawa on Decca. Stage director Robert Carsen created a luxurious stage with colourful costumes which links up the tradition with the modern chic.

Alban Berg's devastating 20th century masterpiece Wozzeck is a complex psychodrama based on the play by Georg Bchner following the harrowing story of a private soldier who having fathered a child by his mistress descends into madness and murder. This highly-acclaimed production of Wozzeck staged by Patrice Chreau and conducted by Daniel Barenboim was recorded live at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 1994. There is fine singing from Franz Grundheber in the title role and the top-quality cast also includes Waltraud Meier as Marie Graham Clark as Hauptmann Gnter von Kannen as the Doktor and Mark Baker as the Tambourmajor. Unlike many other productions which take a stark view of the opera Chreau's staging presents a more human view depicting Wozzeck and Marie as the tragic poor battered and exploited by the world because of their position in society.
Sigfrido / Siegfried (2 Dvd)
L's Bop' is the first work of the 'Very Special Concert' and at once points the was for the evening. Joe Henderson shows himself to be a wizard with his saxophone; Chick Corea displays his piano virtuosity and Stanley Clarke and Lenny White demonstrates their multi-rhythmical talents on double bass and drums.'Why Wait' begins with an obstinate rhythm form which Henderson develops his interpretation. The music reaches out to ever-widening realms and Henderson chances on three openings for solo's to give himself free rein for his interpretation. A dialogue follows between Corea and Clarke with the latter amply demonstrating his creativity on the double bass in the closing sequence. As a finale the four instruments again form an ensemble and for a second time we begin to recognise the theme of 'Why Wait .In the introduction of his composition '500 Miles High' Corea reveals his musical foundation with his typically classical idiom. The intensifying drive of the rhythmical power inspires White Clarke and Corea to peak form. A veritable pyrotechnics of musical ideas ignites and the composition ends on an open note so to speak .

One of the chief pleasures of this live production of Otello from the Berlin Staatsoper Unter den Linden is Daniel Barenboim's conducting. From the opening gale-force blast of storm music, through the crunching and stabbing accompaniment of Iago's "Credo" to the shimmering strings of Desdemona's "Willow Song", he doesn't miss a trick. Everything works at the highest pitch of intensity and the orchestra sticks to his beat like glue. It's a necessary compensation for the shortcomings of the staging: the stolid chorus remains unperturbed by the storm and is directed to perform with unison movements; the acting (apart from Valeri Alexejev) is non-committal, and Alexandre Tarta's video direction somewhat flat-footed. She doesn't manage to make much small-screen sense of an impenetrably murky opening scene, for example, and doesn't seem fond of reaction shots. That said, Christian Franz and Emily Magee both have large-scale voices that they know how to shade into mo! ments of intimacy, and George Tsypin's sets are impressive: the murder of Desdemona is set against a brilliant lake of fire. On the DVD: Otello is presented in 1.78:1 ratio with PCM Stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound options. The picture quality is clear, although much of the lighting of this live production is low-level and thus many details do not come over well. Nor does the stage microphone system avoid some muffling of sound. There are subtitles in Italian, English, German, French and Spanish. --Warwick Thompson
