  Romance with A Double Bass is a truly delightful film and an important piece of film history. Based on a short story by Anton Chekhov this project was one of John Cleese's first post-Python projects. Romance With A Double Bass was the second writing collaboration for Cleese and Connie Booth and their first on screen appearance together before they created the classic Fawlty Towers. A bassist (Cleese) shows up early for the betrothal ball of a beautiful princess (Booth) and whiles away the time having a dip in the river. The princess is doing the same unbeknownst to the bass player but when someone steals their clothes the bass player helps the princess to preserve her dignity by transporting her back to the castle in his bass case; along the way they overcome many mishaps and discover they have feelings for each other. The film also starts a host of British talent including June Whitfield Graham Crowden Freddie Jones Jonathan Lynn and Andrew Sachs.

His bitterness evaporates, he no longer cares about his lost money, and he commits himself completely to his adopted child, who grows up into a loving and beautiful daughter. But Marner's happiness may be threatened when Eppie's real father wants to claim Eppie as his own. Ben Kingsley gives a subtle and moving performance as the simple weaver, and a strong cast gives him ample support in this 1985 BBC adaptation of George Eliot's novel. Silas Marner is not particularly complex--it's certainly a more modest undertaking than Eliot's most famous novel, Middlemarch--but this sentimental Victorian tale, filled with historical detail, potential tragedy, heartless villains and the redeeming power of childhood, makes for a very satisfying film. --Simon Leake, Amazon.com

He will open his famous factory and reveal all of its secrets and magic to five lucky children who find golden tickets hidden inside five randomly selected Wonka chocolate bars. Nothing would make Charlie's family happier than to see him win but the odds are very much against him as they can only afford to buy one chocolate bar a year for his birthday. Indeed one by one news breaks around the world about the children finding golden tickets and Charlie's hope grows dimmer. First there is gluttonous Augustus Gloop who thinks of nothing but stuffing sweets into his mouth all day followed by spoiled Veruca Salt who throws fits if her father doesn't buy her everything she wants. Next comes Violet Beauregarde a champion gum chewer who cares only for the trophies in her display case and finally surly Mike Teavee who's always showing off how much smarter he is than everyone else. But then something wonderful happens. Charlie finds some money on the snowy street and takes it to the nearest store for a Wonka Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight thinking only of how hungry he is and how good it will taste. There under the wrapper is a flash of gold. It's the last ticket. Charlie is going to the factory! His Grandpa Joe (David Kelly) is so excited by the news that he springs out of bed as if suddenly years younger remembering a happier time when he used to work in the factory before Willy Wonka closed its gates to the town forever. The family decides that Grandpa Joe should be the one to accompany Charlie on this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Soon Lucas is ant-sized and sentenced to live among the ants where he has to learn their ways in order to earn his freedom. Zok's ever cheerful girlfriend Hova (Julia Roberts) becomes Lucas's mentor teaching him the ways of the ant world and helping him gain a whole new perspective. He begins to understand the meaning of teamwork and how working with others can help an individual accomplish great things. He also learns that danger lurks everywhere for an ant: killer wasps hungry frogs even sunlight reflected off a mirror can mean certain death. Even worse before being shrunk Lucas was tricked into signing a contract with a slimy exterminator Stan Beals (Paul Giamatti) who will soon be returning to destroy the colony unless Lucas can find a way to stop him. An amusing smart script and likeable characters are hallmarks of this pleasant romp through a secret underground world.

The latest in a long line of live-actioned-up retro cartoon faves, Scooby-Doo: The Movie features superb action set-pieces and seamlessly blended live actor/CGI interaction--our eponymous hero is rendered with particular panache. What's more, the special effects are backed by a scarily well-written script and some frighteningly good performances. The Buffy-tastic Sarah Michelle Gellar was born to be Daphne, and Matthew Lillard is show-stealing as the dream-to-play Shaggy. The characters themselves are darkly developed--Fred is now a vain egotist, Velma a last-picked-at-sport geek and Daphne a Clueless-style airhead. Happily, Shaggy and Scooby are still a pair of snack-happy gormless goofs for whom friendship outweighs all else. Scooby-Doo: The Movie manages to be great fun for the kids without neglecting the fans of the original (1969!) series. Alongside the fun, frights and frantic action are clever in-jokes and even a few hints at some rather adult goings on--Shaggy getting "toasted" in a smokey hippy-style camper van may explain why he's always so peckish. Throw in a surprise appearance from a love-to-hate familiar face, some Charlie's Angels-style wire work and a storming rap-rock soundtrack and it's a hit for all the family.
