This box set features all four seasons of the classic comedy series A Bit Of Fry And Laurie. After a few appearances on various television shows ex-Cambridge University students Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie finally got the chance to shine in their very own A Bit Of Fry And Laurie. Full of turns of phrase and elaborate wordplay A Bit Of Fry And Laurie was the kind of sophisticated comedy that had been little seen on British TV screens. With an old-fashioned revue-type atmosphere and oddly 'British' sketches the delicate innuendos coupled with Fry's ability to suggest hidden meanings in everyday phrases were a winning formula that allowed the pair to continue their partnership for almost 10 years.

  • Wilde [DVD]Wilde | DVD | (18/01/2016) from £11.10   |  Saving you £1.89 (17.03%)   |  RRP £12.99

Wilde could easily have been nothing more than another well-dressed literary film from the British costume drama stable, but thanks to a richly textured performance from Stephen Fry in the title role, it becomes something deeper--a moving study of how the conflict between individual desires and social expectations can ruin lives. Oscar Wilde's writing may be justifiably legendary for its sly, barbed wit, but Wilde the film is far from a comedy, even though Fry relishes delivering the great man's famous quips. It takes on tragic dimensions as soon as Wilde meets Lord Alfred Douglas, known as Bosie, the strikingly beautiful but viciously selfish young aristocrat who wins Oscar's heart but loses him his reputation, marriage and freedom. Fry is brilliant at capturing how the intensity of Wilde's love for Bosie threw him off balance, becoming an all-consuming force he was unable to resist. Jude Law expertly depicts both Bosie's allure and his spitefully destructive side, there are subtle supporting performances from Vanessa Redgrave, Jennifer Ehle and Zoe Wanamaker, and the period trappings are lavishly trowelled on. But this is Fry's show all the way: from Oscar the darling of theatrical London to Wilde the prisoner broken on the wheel of Victorian moralism, he doesn't put a foot wrong. It feels like the role he was born to play. --Andy Medhurst

  • Alfresco -The Complete SeriesAlfresco -The Complete Series | DVD | (02/02/2009) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

In the early 1980s Granada's Alfresco gave early exposure to six young comedians who would become household names within a few years of its transmission. Having engaged Ben Elton as writer (a choice made by Rik Mayall who was originally to star) the show's producer Sandy Ross found his participants at the Edinburgh Fringe; Stephen Fry Hugh Laurie Emma Thompson Paul Shearer and Siobhan Redmond were then invited to take part in a sketch-based show that was intended to rival the BBC's Monty Python and more recently Not the Nine O'Clock News. The resulting mini-series screened only in the North-West in 1982 as There's Nothing to Worry About! was reborn a year later as Alfresco with Robbie Coltrane replacing Paul Shearer. Running for two series Alfresco was notable not only for its contributors but the originality of its format; the use of hand-held recording equipment (previously only used in news bulletins) ensured an innovative fresh feel for its many outdoor scenes. This complete set features both series of Alfresco and all three episodes of There's Nothing to Worry About!

  • Cold Comfort Farm [DVD]Cold Comfort Farm | DVD | (07/11/2016) from £13.21   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

Cold Comfort Farm is a hilarious spoof on British costume dramas that stars a pre-Pearl Harbor Kate Beckinsale as a strong-willed young woman named Miss Flora Poste, who finds herself orphaned and without means in the 1930s. Moving in with some half-savage relatives on a country farm, Flora is hardly daunted by their primitivism (as she might have been in a novel by Thomas Hardy) but instead takes charge and imposes hygiene, order and good manners on the dirty, superstitious lot. John Schlesinger directs this brisk, infectious adaptation of the 1932 novel by Stella Gibbons. Beckinsale is wonderful and the rest of the savvy, inspired cast perfectly send up a host of literary clichés. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

  • Gormenghast [2000]Gormenghast | DVD | (05/06/2000) from £7.39   |  Saving you £-1.39 (N/A%)   |  RRP £6.00

The BBC's lavish, glowingly designed adapation of Mervyn Peake's eccentrically brilliant novels Titus Groan and Gormenghast is a triumph of casting. Ian Richardson's Lear-like depiction of the mad earl of a remote, vast, ritual-obsessed building is matched by the brutal pragmatism of Celia Imrie as his wife, the synchronised madness of Zoe Wanamaker and Lynsey Baxter as his twin sisters and the duplicitous charm of Jonathan Rhys-Meyer as Steerpike, the kitchen-boy determined to take over no matter how many deaths it costs. John Sessions is surprisingly touching as Prunesquallor, the family doctor who realises almost too late what Steerpike intends. It is always tricky to film a book dear to the hearts of its admirers: Wilson and his design team achieve a look rather more pre-Raphaelite than Peake's own illustrations, shabby velvets, garish sunlight and dank stone passages. The score by Richard Rodney Bennett is full of attractive surprises--fanfares and waltzes and apotheoses--and John Tavener's choral additions are plausibly parts of the immemorial ritual of Gormenghast. On the DVD: The double DVD comes with scene selection, an informative half-hour documentary on the making of the serial and a slide gallery of costume designs, characters and their dooms. --Roz Kaveney

  • Blackadder: Complete Series 2 (Blackadder II)Blackadder: Complete Series 2 (Blackadder II) | DVD | (13/11/2000) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Although now regarded as the opening salvo of a classic series, the original Blackadder series was not considered a great success, either among critics or many viewers, so a major rethink took place when it was recommissioned. On the writing front, future-Four Weddings And A Funeral scribe Richard Curtis was joined by Ben Elton, while the expensive War of the Roses-era sets were replaced by cosier Elizabethan ones. The most important change, however, was with Rowan Atkinson's eponymous character who, in the first series, had been a fairly weak-willed idiot but now emerged as the familiar Machiavellian fiend which would cement Atkinson's place in the pantheon of great British sitcom actors. Moreover, even if so many of the script's lines have been subsequently ripped off by lesser hands that it can't help but occasionally sound dated, the central performances of Atkinson, Tony Robinson (Baldrick), Tim McInnery (Lord Percy), Stephen Fry (Lord Melchett) and, of course, Miranda Richardson as the childishly psychotic Queen Elizabeth ("I love it when you get cross. Sometimes I think about having you executed just to see the expression on your face") remain note perfect. Yet the real pleasure for viewers may be in rediscovering the raft of excellent guest star performances--not least Tom "Doctor Who" Baker's berserk turn as a literally legless old sea dog given to guzzling his own urine long before the drinking water has run out. --Clark Collis
