Tackling a series on her own without husband Desi Arnaz Lucille Ball firmly established herself as the first lady of American television with this long-running series. With one exception the supporting cast underwent numerous changes over the years and at one time included both of Miss Ball's real-life children. The one exception was Gale Gordon who provided Lucy with a stubborn stuffy foil for most of the show's run. The real constant however was Lucy and her special brand of slapstick humour played off of all sorts of guests and regulars.
'The Lucy Show' debuted on television on October 1 1962 and featured Lucille Ball as Lucy Carmichael a widow sharing a house with the divorcee Vivian Bagley and their three kids in Danfield NY. Gale Gordon as Mr. Mooney joined the cast in 1963 and the lovable redhead soon found herself getting in trouble with the easily agitated skinflint Mr. Mooney her new banker who was in charge of the meager trust left to Lucy by her dead husband. If Charles Martin's wisecracking 1948 period-piece My Dear Secretary hasn't quite endured as a classic of its kind, it still commands attention as an appealing and often very funny curiosity. Kirk Douglas rightly earned his status as one of the titans of big-screen epic drama, so it's a surprise to encounter him in this romantic comedy as a feckless writer who can always find something to do rather than get down to work, leaving a string of outraged, frustrated or compromised secretaries in his wake. Douglas has a reasonably light comic touch and spars well with Laraine Day, in determined form as the secretary whom finally tames him and, in a notable strike for women's liberation, becomes a successful author herself in the process. But this is a film in which the supporting cast steal the best lines and scenes. Keenan Wynn is delightful as Ronnie, Douglas' neighbour and partner in the pursuit of pleasure. Some splendid high campery offers ample evidence that in a more enlightened age, Ronnie would surely have been openly gay. How else to explain his hilarious last reel marriage of convenience to the wealthy dragon of a landlady, played by the irrepressible Florence Bates? It isn't vintage screwball by any means, but My Dear Secretary is witty and literate enough to make you long for a revival in sophisticated cinema comedy. Truly, they don't make 'em like they used to. On the DVD: As the rush to release long-forgotten gems on DVD turns into a deluge, we will probably have to get used to the sort of disappointment on offer here: unrestored prints with no digital remastering and lousy sound quality, simply slammed onto the disc. The film could hardly be served less adequately. There isn't even any static background information on the production or the actors, making the package rather poor. --Piers Ford

They go to work raise children look forward to the weekend - and have a healthy interest in sex. Re-Animator was undoubtedly one of the most notorious horror films of the 1980's. Based on a classic 'Mad Professor' tale this relentless splatterfest takes obsession suspense and terror to the very limits of your imagination. Prepare to meet Dr. Herbert West the sickest man in science... The night that medical student Dan Cain discovered his pet cat Rufus dead in his roommates fridge was just the beginning. Before long Dan and his beloved girlfriend Megan become involved in the macabre experiments of his roommate the sinister Dr. Herbert West who has created a serum that can bring both brain and body back from the dead. The immoral scientific methods of Dr. West provide the Dean of the medical school with reason to expel West and force Cain out of the hospital. Undeterred West and Cain continue with their experiments in the hospital's morgue - restoring life to an unlimited supply of fresh corpses. However a chilling side effect to West's discovery leads to a seemingly endless night of mind-bending terror and unthinkable madness.
They're here they're queer and they make Sex & The City look like a demure tea party. Showtime's quintessentially American Queer As Folk--based on the British miniseries--pours on copious amounts of hot and steamy sex. This slick series shares the same basic concept as its British counterpart--centering on a group of gay friends living in a primarily industrial city--but after that all bets are off. Whereas the British version focused on the gritty realistic drama of its characters the American QAF is a glossy fun soap opera that occasionally tackles big issues but never lets you forget that life at times can be a party and you shouldn't be one of those poor suckers starving to...
With a title like Chopper Chicks in Zombietown, you'd be excused from any great expectations here--but you'd also be missing out on one of trash-cinema's great pleasures: catching one of Hollywoood's A-list in their pre-fame days. In this case, the catch is Billy Bob Thornton, in a brief appearance as one of the Chopper Chicks' ex-husbands. It may be a guilty pleasure, but seeing this good 'ol boy playing dumb-as-a-doorknob long before Sling Blade (or A Simple Plan) and paying his dues is still, however strangely, gratifying. As for the film itself, Chopper Chicks is no Hell Comes to Frogtown, but it comes with all of the Troma hallmarks. The requisite beheadings and low-grade effects are all present and correct, along with the so-bad-it's-really-bad dialogue (except for the occasional so-bad-it's-good one-liner). The acting is wooden, the story negligible (cycle sluts come to town, kill zombies, save a schoolbus full of blind kids), and even the appearances by Thornton and original MTV (US) VJ Martha Quinn provide only occasional relief. The DVD extras include a photo gallery of screen-stills and the original trailer. --Randy Silver
