The teen pop sensations make their big screen debut as they find themselves replaced by sinister clones!
For all those of us who spent months debating the Will versus Gareth battle, Pop Idol: A Star is Born is the ideal fix of cheesy Pop Idol action for anyone missing their weekend dose. While those fascinated by the dubious talents at the audition stage will love the Pop Idol: Raw Talent! video, A Star is Born starts from the point where the contest was between 10 finalists, ending with Will's triumphant victory. This video is basically a compilation of performances from the show, which also includes Ant and Dec presenting the wannabes, and although you can't help but love those cheeky Newcastle lads, their introductions become annoyingly repetitive. There are no new stories or additional behind-the-scenes footage here: it's principally about the performances, which were the main reason we tuned in so addictively. Highlights include Will's performance of "Light My Fire" and Hayley's "That Old Devil Called Love". It is fascinating to see Will, the dark horse at the start of the competition, slowly begin to shine in a triumph of flexibility and consistency. Against the patchy performances of some of the others, it's easy to see why Will and Gareth made it to the final two. The contest both united and divided the country but any fan of the series will find plenty of their favourite moments here.--Rachel Ediss

Gareth Gates Live is a concert from his first ever tour, in which the Pop Idol runner-up sent thousands of screaming girls into a knicker-wetting frenzy with pyrotechnics, sparkling (and seemingly uncomfortably tight) Elvis costumes and even a spot of flying, albeit with the help of wires. The spiky-haired pop cutie runs through most famous hits, including "Anyone of Us" ("Stupid Mistake"), "Unchained Melody" and "What My Heart Wants to Say". It's a flashy, up-beat affair and Gareth breezes through his act like a seasoned professional, even bringing on Will Young for a couple of duets towards the end. If it all feels rather by-the-numbers, it's nevertheless sure to have Gareth's fans, old and young alike, tapping their feet and throwing their underwear at the TV screen for years to come. On the DVD: Gareth Gates Live teases with a nicely presented menu screen which leads to some rather sparse extras, including multi-camera-angle scenes, a photo gallery and behind-the-scenes feature. The picture is sharp and the bright colours and occasional pyrotechnics are captured clearly. The 5.1 Dolby mix ensure a good, if not earth-shattering, audio experience, but then Gareth's music doesn't need really need anything more than a serviceable mix. --Jon Weir
Let's face it: Will and Gareth were always going to be the main draw on the Pop Idol 2002 Tour), the live show that took the kids out of the studio and onto the road. After the drawn-out finale of the TV show, the ones who didn't make it got to strut their stuff in front of thousands of teenage girls all screaming for Will and Gareth. It's a glitzy show, undoubtedly, but there is little here that bears repeat viewing, since we saw the wannabes do this every Saturday night for what felt like a century. Given that, thus far, not one of the other so-called "stars" (after Mr Gates, Mr Danesh and Mr Young) have even troubled the Top 40, this tour seems like 14 minutes more fame than most of them deserved. One for the fans only. On the DVD: Pop Idol 2002 Tour is presented in 16:9 anamorphic and Dolby 5.1, so it looks and sounds great, but the standard behind-the-scenes feature and split-screen options are dull and hardly provide much of an insight. --Jonathan Weir
