| RRP DIRTY DEEDS is an Aussie gangster flick set against the booming casino underworld of late 1960s Sydney. Bryan Brown (COCKTAIL, THE THORN BIRDS) stars as Barry Ryan, an Australian mobster who controls the city's gambling scene and is making a killing from the casino slot machines. His profitable venture attracts the unwanted attention of the American Mafia, who attempt to secure a piece of the action by sending in two of their henchmen: the pensive, world-weary veteran Tony (John Goodman) and his violent, not-too-bright sidekick Sal (Felix Williamson). Ryan soon finds himself fending off the trigger-happy Yanks, Outback-style, while also contending with his feisty wife (Toni Collette), needy mistress (Kestie Morassi), and a crooked cop (Sam Neill). Utilising flashy camerawork, black comedy, and mobster protagonists, writer/director David Caesar tips his hat to the criminal capers of Quentin Tarantino and Guy Ritchie, while lending the proceedings a distinctly Down Under flair.

| RRP The 1994 movie Stargate was originally intended as the start of a franchise, but creators Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin were distracted celebrating their Independence Day. Episodic TV treatment was the natural next step. Since neither Kurt Russell nor James Spader would be able to commit, it gave the producers licence to tinker with the cast and the universe they'd explore. Replacing the roles of Colonel Jack O'Neill and Dr. Daniel Jackson respectively are Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks. They're joined by Captain Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) and guilt-stricken former alien baddie Teal'c (Christopher Judge) to form the teacher's pet primary unit SG-1 With a seemingly endless network of Stargates found to exist on planets all across the known universe, their mission is to make first contact with as many friendly races as possible. Chasing their heels at almost every turn are the "overlord" pharaohnic Goa'uld--the ancient Egyptian Gods who are none too chummy after the events of the original film. The welcome notion of a continued plot thread sees offshoots that follow the reincarnation of Daniel's wife, Sam's father literally joining a renegade faction of the Goa'uld, and Jack in an unending quest to out-sarcasm everyone. There's something of The Time Tunnel to the show's premise, but amid a dearth of derivative look-a-likes, Stargate has held its own with stories that put the science fiction back into TV sci-fi. Concluding the cliff-hanger from the end of Season One, "The Serpent's Lair" is a rollercoaster of wit, plot twists, and cutting-edge special effects as the SG-1 team resign themselves to a suicide mission. Then it's a case of ignorance of the law being no excuse in "Prisoners", as the team winds up in a penal colony striking a deal with someone who will have far-reaching influence on their future. Sam is stalked by an assassin after a rescue mission all "In the Line of Duty". She saves someone in the most unique of ways--by taking over as host of their Goa'uld symbiont. This introduction of Jolinar is key to much of the continuing storyline. Dwight Schultz guest stars as "The Gamekeeper" in a garden that forces the team to puzzle their way out of re-living secrets of the past. But all is not what it seems. --Paul Tonks

British Rock Symphony | DVD | (29/08/2005)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Be honest now: what rock fan hasn't fantasised about one day seeing Alice Cooper and The Who's Roger Daltrey on stage together, belting out the Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up" with backing by Pete Townshend's brother, Ringo Starr's son, and the bombast of a full symphony orchestra? Well, OK, so maybe that peculiar pairing is no one's idea of rock & roll heaven. But that didn't stop the producers of British Rock Symphony, a 90-minute outdoor concert, from assembling a wildly disparate cast, ranging from Daltrey, Cooper, and Procol Harum's Gary Brooker to Darlene Love (best known as the voice of the Crystals' classic "He's a Rebel") and lesser lights like singers Alvin Fields and Nikki Lamborn, to raise money for the Let Music Live charity and to celebrate the music of the Beatles, the Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin, and others. Some of it is pretty predictable (there's a feeling of inevitability to "Stairway to Heaven", "With a Little Help from My Friends", "Pinball Wizard," and others), but there are also moments of genuine inspiration. Daltrey, who never seems to tire of those Pete Townshend songs, sounds great on "You Better You Bet" and "Who Are You", as well as outside fare like the Stones' "Street Fighting Man"; and Love, despite an occasional tendency to oversing, brings soulful fervour and conviction to the likes of "Ruby Tuesday". The DVD sound is superb, the visuals are good, and performers and audience alike seem to be having a good time. Still, aside from the curiosity (or novelty) factor, one has to wonder why anyone would prefer these versions to the originals. --Sam Graham, Amazon.com
