A taut thriller interweaving sci-fi fantasy and a story of deadly industrial intrigue Timeslip is a 1955 feature from Emmy Award-winning British writer and director Ken Hughes. Showcasing strong performances from American leads Gene Nelson and Faith Domergue this rare feature (also known as The Atomic Man) is presented here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio. A near-lifeless body is recovered from the Thames shot twice in the back and science reporter Delaney identifies the victim as Stephen Rayner a nuclear physicist who works at a nearby research institute. Delaney goes to the institute and is introduced to a man everyone believes to be Rayner; the likeness is uncanny. Delaney returns to the hospital and questions the now conscious man who mumbles the name ‘VASQUO’ and initials ‘U.T.C.’… a revelation that unfolds into a drama of international espionage. Superman The Movie: The movie that makes a legend come to life. You know the story. The planet Krypton is doomed. Only one man Jor-El knows it and rockets his infant son to refuge on a distant world called Earth. As Jor-El''s son grows to manhood he learns he possesses super-powers he must hide from ordinary mortals around him. It takes a big movie to contain the considerable talents of Marlon Brando Gene Hackman Jackie Cooper Glen Ford Margot Kidder Valerie Perrine and at its heart the most human portrayal of the Man of Steel Christopher Reeve. Superman an Academy Award winner (1978) for special achievement in visual effects is more than big enough. Directed by Richard Donner Superman: The Movie makes us believe this epic story all over again. Superman II: A nuclear explosion in outer space has freed rebel General Zod and his evil cohorts from their captivity in a fragment of Kryptonite. Having been banished from Krypton for their treachery against Jor-El they now plot revenge on his son - Superman. Arch villian Lex Luthor offers his services to Zod meanwhile Lois Lane has discovered Clark Kent''s identity. Will Superman surrender his superhuman powers to marry her or will he save the city of Metropolis? Original cast members from Superman create a blend of thrills humour and humanity that makes this sequel great fun for the whole family. Superman III: After Superman: The Movie's epic storytelling and Superman II's awesome battles how could the first two hits be topped? In Superman III meet Gus Gorman (Richard Pryor) a half-witted computer programming natural. For him a keyboard is a weapon and Superman faces the microelectronic menace of his life. Christopher Reeve reprises his most beloved role deepening his character's human side as Clark Kent reunites with an old flame (Annette O'Toole) at a Smallville High class reunion. And when Superman becomes his own worst enemy after Kryptonite exposure Reeve pulls off both roles with dazzling conviction. Incredible visual effects abound - but above all it has heart heroism and high-flying humor. All in superabundance of course. Superman IV: Christopher Reeve not only dons the hero's cape for the fourth time in Superman IV: The Quest For Peace but also helped develop the film's provocative theme: nuclear disarmament. For me it's the most personal of the entire series Reeve says. It directly reflects what Superman should be and should be doing. Superman does a lot this time around. To make the world safe for nuclear arms merchants archvillain Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) creates a new being to challenge the Man of Steel: the radiation-charged Nuclear Man (Mark Pillow). The two foes clash in an explosive extravaganza that sees Superman save the Statue of Liberty plug a volcanic eruption of Mount Etna and rebuild the demolished Great Wall of China. Your quest for superheroic excitement is over!

Romeo Is Bleeding is the flawed black comedy from director Peter Medak (The Krays) about a bad cop who slowly gets his due. Gary Oldman plays yet another quirky character, this time a New York detective on the take. His life goes haywire as he squares off with a Russian hit woman. Despite an intriguing cast and great dialogue, the movie becomes a bit too eccentric for its own good as several actors have nothing to do. The high point is Lena Olin, who finally has a role she can sink her teeth into: her zesty, monstrous assassin, Mona Demarkov, is one of the great movie villains. --Doug Thomas

Superman: The MovieAt the heart of this Academy Award®-winning*, fan-favorite box-office smash (and for three sequels) is Christopher Reeve's intelligent, affectionate portrayal of a most human Man of Steel. Reeve, Marlon Brando (Jor-El), Gene Hackman (Lex Luthor) and Margot Kidder (Lois Lane) give performances that fuel the film's aura of legend. Watching Superman isn't just like being a kid again. It's better.Superman II: The Richard Donner CutDirector Richard Donner began shooting Superman II while concurrently filming Superman: The Movie, though the theatrical version of the film was ultimately directed by Richard Lester. In 2006, Donner's original unique vision was released for the first time. Jor-El (Marlon Brando in footage cut from the theatrical version) appears in key scenes that amplify Superman lore and deepen the relationship between father and son. Lois Lane plots more schemes to unmask Clark Kent as Superman. With so many changes, large and small, including a different beginning and resolution, this version is an eye-opening alternate experience.Superman II: Theatrical CutUnwittingly released from Phantom Zone imprisonment, three superpowered Planet Krypton criminals (Terence Stamp, Sarah Douglas and Jack O'Halloran) plan to enslave Earth just when Superman (Christopher Reeve) decides to show a more romantic side to Lois Lane (Margot Kidder). Gene Hackman also returns as Lex Luthor in this sequel that features a top supporting cast, witty Richard Lester direction, and visuals that astound and delight.Superman III:Meet Gus Gorman (Richard Pryor), a naive computer-programming natural. For him a keyboard is a weapon and, as a result, Superman faces the microelectronic menace of his life. • The Battle Of Algiers [1966]The Battle Of Algiers | DVD | (01/12/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Director Gillo Pontecorvo's 1966 movie The Battle of Algiers concerns the violent struggle in the late 1950s for Algerian independence from France, where the film was banned on its release for fear of creating civil disturbances. Certainly, the heady, insurrectionary mood of the film, enhanced by a relentlessly pulsating Ennio Morricone soundtrack, makes for an emotionally high temperature throughout. With the advent of the "war against terror" in recent years, the film's relevance has only intensified. Shot in a gripping, quasi-documentary style, The Battle of Algiers uses a cast of untrained actors coupled with a stern voiceover. Initially, the film focuses on the conversion of young hoodlum Ali La Pointe (Brahim Haggiag) to FLN (the Algerian Liberation Front.) However, as a sequence of outrages and violent counter-terrorist measures ensue, it becomes clear that, as in Eisenstein's October, it is the Revolution itself that is the true star of the film. Pontecorvo balances cinematic tension with grimly acute political insight. He also manages an even-handedness in depicting the adversaries. He doesn't flinch from demonstrating the civilian consequences of the FLN's bombings, while Colonel Mathieu, the French office brought in to quell the nationalists, is played by Jean Martin as determined, shrewd and, in his own way, honourable man. However, the closing scenes of the movie--a welter of smoke, teeming street demonstrations and the pealing white noise of ululations--leaves the viewer both intellectually and emotionally convinced of the rightfulness of the liberation struggle. This is surely among a fistful of the finest movies ever made. --David Stubbs
