February, 1983. Detectives are called to a residential address in the London suburbs following reports that the drains have been clogged by human remains. One of the property's residents, Dennis Nilsen a mild-mannered and unassuming civil servant is brought in for questioning, leading to the discovery of one of the most shocking and disturbing cases of serial murder ever to rock Britain. Offering a grim and gritty retelling of the story of Des Nilsen, often dubbed the British Jeffery Dahmer, 1989's Cold Light of Day stars Bob Flag (the face of Big Brother in Michael Radford's 1984) as Nilsen-cipher Jorden March, delivering one of the most chilling and credible portrayals of a serial killer ever committed to screen. From writer-director Fhiona-Louise, Cold Light of Day which picked up the UCCA Venticittà Award at the 1990 Venice International Film Festival is a hugely underseen and underrated British effort that can stand proudly alongside the likes of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer as one of the most unflinching true-crime films of all time. With the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow (memorably portrayed by Johnny Depp) earning legions of fans right across the globe, the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy has proven to be one of the most popular series of films in recent times. Fortunately, there's good reason too. The trilogy starts off with the best of the three films. The Curse Of The Black Pearl is a superb piece of blockbuster movie making, delivering lots of laughs, some fabulous set pieces and a core of good, old-fashioned swashbuckling action. With a terrific supporting cast, led by the likes of Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, its running time simply zips by in a flash, and there's plenty of incentive to hit the play button again once the credits roll. The second movie in the series, Dead Man's Chest was more commercially successful, but it's not quite as strong a film. Nonetheless, there's still plenty to enjoy, including Bill Nighy's stunning Davy Jones (the special effects there are something to behold). And it earns extra bonus points for a terrific final twist in the end reel. And then we arrive at the closing part of the trilogy, At World's End. This is arguably the most bloated, with a nigh-on three hour running time, but it does pack a lot in. Multiple Johnny Depps for starters, along with some terrific action too. While the three parts of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy may thus be a little uneven, its nonetheless a collection of films with plenty to recommend. The first part sails away with the top honours, but there's little doubt that all three are set to entertain audiences for many years to come. --Jon Foster

  • England's Summer of Cricket 2012 [DVD]England's Summer of Cricket 2012 | DVD | (15/10/2012) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £29.99

Packed with nearly 8 hours of action from England's 2012 summer of cricket. England went into the 2012 summer ranked the world's best Test team and aiming for top spot in the One-Day game. In their way stood Test and ODI series against an emerging West Indies side and the mighty South Africa, plus a One-Day series against the old enemy, Australia. The summer began with Andrew Strauss back in the runs and wickets for Stuart Broad. Darren Sammy and Marlon Samuels starred for the Windies, and there was an incredible world record innings at number 11 by Tino Best. Then, under Alastair Cook, the One-Day side were far too good for Australia as England eased to a comprehensive series victory. But the biggest challenge was still to come... Kevin Pietersen's scintillating 149 and an exciting 95 from Jonathan Bairstow gave England hope against South Africa but they were up against a side at the very top of their game, with Hashim Amla in sensational form. The home side went to the final match at Lord's desperately trying to cling on to top spot, a struggle which came down to a thrilling last day of the series... It was to be Strauss's last match as he announced his retirement from the game. But the One-Day side ended the summer on a high. An even contest against South Africa saw England end 2012 as the number one side in the world.

House on Haunted Hill is one of the new breed of waste-no-time thrill machines, like Deep Blue Sea, and a particularly effective example at that. The plot is pure contrivance: For a party stunt, a wealthy amusement-park manufacturer (Geoffrey Rush) offers five people a million dollars if they spend the night in a former insane asylum where the patients murdered the sadistic staff. But it turns out the five people who arrive aren't the five he invited--did his wife (Famke Janssen), who hates him, make the switch? From there events unfold with a smart combination of human and supernatural machinations; spooky jolts are dispensed at regular, but not entirely predictable, intervals. The visual effects owe a considerable debt to Jacob's Ladder, a much more ambitious movie; House on Haunted Hill just wants to get under your skin, and succeeds more than you'd expect. Rush is his entertainingly hammy self; Janssen, Taye Diggs, Ali Larter and Bridgette Wilson are attractive and reasonably straight-faced about it all; and Chris Kattan is genuinely funny as the house's neurotic owner. Some elements of the plot seem to have been lost in the editing process, but it hardly matters. More bothersome is that the scares go flat when computer effects take over at the end--the digital images just aren't as creepy as the more suggestive stuff that came before. But that's just the very end; most of the movie has a lot of momentum. Watch until the end of the credits for a final bit of eeriness. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle (Michael Kitchen), the sober yet heartening hero of the exemplary mystery series Foyle's War, isn't so much a reserved Englishman as he is an all-round minimalist. He might not approve of lavish praise for himself or Kitchen's sterling portrayal, but he's a man used to spinning gold from disappointment. Stuck investigating murders while lesser colleagues are given key intelligence posts to fight Hitler in 1940, a restless Foyle is faced with the brutal killing of a German woman in a coastal village. Was it misplaced revenge against all of Germany that did her in, a controversial family trust, or something else--something worse? While Foyle deliberates and stews in career frustration, he has a paradoxical, revivifying effect on several human casualties of war and on justice itself. This is a fine mystery with a welcome detective hero. --Tom Keogh
