  • The Mirror Has Two Faces [1997]The Mirror Has Two Faces | DVD | (01/10/1999) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

Barbra Streisand's self-absorbed remake of a 1958 French film stars Jeff Bridges as a college professor tired of sexual politics. He makes a deal with a dowdy colleague (Streisand) that they provide companionship for one another, with no thought of getting into bed. She agrees but soon becomes frustrated, the agreement only reinforcing her unfulfilled desire to have a complete relationship with a man. Mimi Rogers is on hand as Babs's striking sister, and Lauren Bacall received an Oscar nomination for her role as the heroine's selfish mother. The Mirror Has Two Faces is OK, but it becomes an irritating vanity piece for Streisand (who directed as well as stars). Her character constantly gazes upon her own reflection and is told at least a dozen times, one way or another, just how attractive she is. One wants to shout out, we get it already--you're pretty! --Tom Keogh

  • For The Boys [DVD]For The Boys | DVD | (25/02/2013) from £9.43   |  Saving you £0.56 (5.94%)   |  RRP £9.99

Bette Midler poured her heart and soul into For the Boys, the story of a pair of entertainers who repeatedly took time from their careers to entertain US troops at war, from World War II to Vietnam--and it sank like a stone at the box office. Granted, it's corny and emotionally over the top. It is the tale of an unlikely team of singer and comedian (played by Midler and James Caan), who are brought together for a reunion show in their dotage. As they nervously anticipate seeing each other for the first time in years, they are flooded with memories of their earlier days as a hot show-biz couple whose own troubles always took second place to their patriotic urge to buoy the boys in uniform. Some say this was a veiled film version of the Martha Raye story; Midler gives it her all and Caan isn't bad. But director Mark Rydell lays on the schmaltz so thickly at times that it overpowers the tougher material. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

  • War Collection - 633 Squadron / The Bridge At Remagen / The Great EscapeWar Collection - 633 Squadron / The Bridge At Remagen / The Great Escape | DVD | (06/06/2005) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

This box set contains the following three titles; all classic war films. 633 Squadron: 633 Squadron has enjoyed an unqualified stream of successes. Their luck changes when they are assigned to bomb a German heavy water plant which is part of the Nazi effort to develop an atomic bomb in Norway which is shielded by a mountain and guarded by heavy anti-aircraft defences. Their nearly impossible mission is further complicated by a German air raid the difficult approach to the target and the capture and torture of the underground leader who is assisting the squadron. The Bridge At Remagen: In the last days of World War II the Allied Army desperatly searched for a bridgehead across the impenetrable Rhein River in order to launch a major assault into the center of Germany. 'Bridge At Remagen' tells the true story of the battle for this last bridgehead from both the German and the American perspective. The Great Escape: Based on a true story 'The Great Escape' deals with the largest Allied escape attempt from a German prisoner of war camp during the Second World War. The first part of the film focuses on the escape efforts within the camp and the process of secretly digging an escape tunnel. The second half of the film deals with the massive effort by the German Gestapo to track down the 70 escaped prisoners who are at this point throughout the Third Reich attempting to make their way to England and various neutral countries.

  • Look Who's Talking Now [1993]Look Who's Talking Now | DVD | (22/07/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

The last film in the Look Who's Talking minifranchise goes to the dogs, literally, to keep the series' major gimmick intact--letting the audience hear the thoughts of the little newcomers in the Ubriacco family. The kids who were once babies in the two prior films can now babble for themselves, so the script finds the adult characters taking in two mutts who do a "Lady and the Tramp" thing while we listen in. Travolta (rescued a year later in 1994's Pulp Fiction) and Alley mark time while Danny De Vito and Diane Keaton provide the most entertainment performing the dogs' voices. Not awful, but not necessary either, and a long way from the small but real qualities of the first film. --Tom Keogh
