| RRP Papillon (Dir. Franklin J. Schaffner 1973): They called him Papillon meaning butterfly. If only he had wings to go with the name. Unable to fly Henri Charriere virtually willed himself free. He persisted until he did the impossible: escape Devil's Island. Based on Charriere's bestseller and shot in Spain and Jamaica Franklin J. Schaffner's film of Papillon united two stars at key career junctions. After a decade of fine work in The Great Escape The Sand Pebbles and Bullitt Steve McQueen found in Charriere another ideal tough-guy role. Coming off The Graduate Midnight Cowboy and Little Big Man Dustin Hoffman again distinguished himself as Dega Charriere's scruffy friend. Midnight Express (Dir. Alan Parker 1973): Brad Davis and John Hurt star in this riveting true story of a young American's nightmarish experiences in a Turkish prison and his unforgettable journey to freedom. Busted for attempting to smuggle hashish out of Istanbul American College student Billy Hayes (Davis) is thrown into the city's most brutal jail. After suffering through four years of sadistic torture and inhuman conditions Billy is about to be released when his parole is denied. Only his inner courage and the support of a fellow inmate (Hurt) give him the strength to catch the Midnight Express (prison code for escape). Missing (Dir. Costa Gavras 1982): Director Constantin Costa-Gavras made his English-language film debut with this political thriller based on a true story. Although the nation depicted is never named directly the action clearly takes place in Chile after the military coup. Missing centers around the disappearance of Charles Horman (John Shea) an American expatriate who lives with his wife Beth (Sissy Spacek) in South America. One night armed soldiers enter their home and drag him away. In desperation Beth decides to contact Charles's father Ed (Jack Lemon) and ask for help. In contrast to his left-wing daughter-in-law Ed is staunchly patriotic. But as he gets the runaround from both American and Chilean officials Ed receives a cold hard lesson in political reality... and learns some ugly truths about US involvement in Latin America.

| RRP Few would put up too much of a convincing argument that Cars is Pixars best film. But when merchandising is brought into the equation, its easily its most lucrative, and it certainly has a legion of fans. With good reason too. If you can forgive the very flabby second act, the story of Lightning McQueen as he attempts to race his way to glory is really good fun, complete with some very clever characterisations of the cars themselves. Its also a stunning looking film, and thats where the Blu-ray disc comes in. For even if youre one of those who believes that Cars is the weakest Pixar movie, theres little doubting just how wonderful it looks in high definition. Take the race sequence at the start. Its a scene that could sell a thousand 1080p television sets on the spot, so amazing does it look. Its matched by a cinema-standard surround sound mix that rewards every penny invested in home cinema hardware. And, to be fair, the film itself is still pretty good. Cars is too long, certainly, and its lacking some of the charms of Pixars other movies. But its rollicking good fun, and perhaps has been harshly treated by some reviewers simply by comparison to other Pixar features. For compared with much of what everyone else is putting out, Cars is both superior family entertainment, and one of the best looking Blu-ray discs on the market. Its hard to grumble too much about that. --Jon Foster

| RRP The Last Days of Patton One of the most heroic and inspirational leaders of World War Two, General George S. Patton (George C. Scott) is seriously injured in a car accident just a few weeks after the end of the war and is not expected to survive. This is the story of the last few months of the General's life and the Army Medical Corps efforts to save him. As he lies immobile in a hospital bed, surrounded by the pessimistic doctors and his worried wife, he waits for death and reminisces about his happy younger days. From Hell to Victory On August 24th 1939 in a small riverside cafe in France, six old friends vow to reunite on that day each year, however fate has a way of disrupting even the best laid plans. With the outbreak of war the friends find their lives running very different courses as their loyalties and nationalities begin to forge their future. An action-packed tale of war, friendships and family ties. Hitler's SS This star-studded and gripping drama portrays the rise and fall of the Third Reich through the lives of two brothers who find themselves on opposite sides of the Nazi party. Helmut (Bill Nighy) the brilliant but opportunistic student, and Karl (John Shea) an idealistic athlete both come of age at the dawn of Hitler’s 1930s Germany. Although bound under the Nazi banner and in love with the same woman (Lucy Gutteridge), both brothers have different experience and expectations in the conflict. Battle of Blood Island An amphibious attack by American troops on a South Pacific island meets with a heavy Japanese defence killing all but two survivors, leaving one unable to walk. Isolation, lack of food and a primal fear all begin to take their toll as the months pass and when the realisation of their situation begins to sink in, the men have a new enemy to fight - each other. Dive Bomber The ever-dashing Errol Flynn stars alongside Fred MacMurray in this action packed drama set at the U.S. Naval Air Station in San Diego during the uncertain year of 1941. With war already raging in Europe, U.S. Forces began to prepare for their seemingly inevitable involvement in the conflict. As part of the preparation Naval flight surgeon Lt. Doug Lee (Errol Flynn) is determined to eradicate pilot blackout and altitude sickness, thus handing U.S. pilots an immeasurable advantage. With the initially reluctant help of Lt. Com Joe Blake (Fred MacMurray) the two men risk their own lives in order to find a cure. Aerial Gunner Lieutenant Davis and his stricken aircraft return to base following a successful bombing mission over Japan, only to discover members of his crew are either missing or dead. Recounting in flashbacks the events leading up to the fatal mission, Davis tells of his rivalry with his aerial gunner Sgt Foxy Pattis. A dramatic story of envy, revenge and comradeship set against the background of World War Two.

| RRP Initially one of NBC network's most successful series, The A-Team ran for 90 one-hour episodes (with a few feature-length specials thrown in) from 1983 to 1987. The premise of the series was certainly different. A group of US operatives is sent to rob the Bank of Hanoi during the Vietnam War in an attempt to destabilise the country's economy, but the bigwig who organises the raid is killed, leaving no indication that the mission was officially sanctioned. Returning home, Smith (George Peppard), BA (it stood for "Bad Attitude") Baracus (Mr T), Face (Dirk Benedict) and that "crazy foo" Murdoch (Dwight Schultz) suddenly find themselves accused of criminal activity, obliging them to set up as benevolent mercenaries. They tear around the country in what looks like a delivery van, generally do-gooding while keeping one step ahead of the inept military police. Snappy, witty and fast paced, the series began as a spoof of the action-thriller genre. It wasn't until the later episodes that an element of seriousness crept in, which may have caused the decline in audience figures eventually resulting in the show's cancellation. On video and DVD though, it remains a feast for fans of classic cult TV.--Roger Thomas
