Featuring the cinema debut of Oscar nominee Laurence Harvey and boasting a haunting score by George Melachrino House of Darkness is a rare atmospheric chiller presented here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio. Hatred is always close to the surface in an old country house in Dorset at the beginning of the century as Elaine Merrimer soon discovers when she goes to live there with her husband Francis. Sharing the house with his stepbrothers Noel and John Francis is resentful that his dead mother did not leave him her property. John considering Francis a wastrel resents having to support him and his wife. Noel meanwhile nurtures a neurotic hatred and fear of his stepbrother... SPECIAL FEATURE: Original Paperwork PDF

  • Starman [1984]Starman | DVD | (08/04/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

Starman is easily director John Carpenter's warmest and most beguiling film, and the only one that ever earned him an Oscar nomination. While most movie buffs are likely to call Halloween the best movie from Carpenter, die-hard romantics and anyone who cried while watching E.T. will vote in favour of the director's 1984 hit. Jeff Bridges is the alien visitor to Earth who is knocked off course and must take an interstate road trip to rendezvous with a mothership from his home planet. To complete this journey he assumes the physical form of the dead husband of a Wisconsin widow (Karen Allen) who responds first with fear, then sympathy, and finally love. Carpenter's graceful strategy is to switch the focus of this E.T.-like film from science fiction to a gentle road-movie love story, made believable by the memorable performances of Bridges and Allen. It's a bit heavy-handed with tenacious government agents who view the Starman as an alien threat (don't they always?), but Carpenter handles the action with intelligent flair, sensitivity and lighthearted humour. If you're not choked up during the final scene, well, you just might not be human. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com On the DVD: Starman on disc is presented in anamorphic widescreen transferred from NTSC and letterboxed at 2.35.1. The picture is clear and sharp with very little grain. The soundtrack is crisp, perfectly complementing the romantic nature of this film. The overriding reason to shell out on this special edition is the commentary from John Carpenter and Jeff Bridges, in which director and actor show a genuine affection for the film. Other extras are a featurette filmed around the original release in 1884, a music video starring Bridges and costar Karen Allen covering The Everly Brothers classic "All I Have to Do is Dream", and a trailer for Close Encounters of the Third Kind. --Kristen Bowditch

Summer Of Sam (Dir. Spike Lee 1999): In the summer of 1977 Saturday night fever ruled and the first thrashings of punk were being heard. By day temperatures soared on the sweltering streets of Manhattan but by night a serial killer dubbed the Son of Sam stalked the suburbs indiscriminately shooting young brunettes and held New York City in a grip of terror. Trying to make sense of their lives in this overwhelming atmosphere of fear and suspicion are Vinny a streetwise Casanova indulging in affairs under the nose of his loving wife Dionna and Ritchie a punk musician moonlighting as a male stripper. As the murder's actions impact on all their lifestyles they start to suspect the killer might be someone from their own neighborhood - or even one of their own friends. From the controversial director Spike Lee comes his boldest and most ambitious film brilliantly capturing the sights sounds and sexual attitudes of the 1970s. Boston Strangler (Dir. Richard Fleischer 1968): With 13 women murdered Boston is held under siege by a madman. One by one they fall each death more gruesome than the last. The actual murders that rocked Boston in the 60's are the gripping subject of this unforgettable police thriller. The Boston Strangler is one of the most powerful films in its genre with possibly Tony Curtis' finest performance. Kalifornia (Dir. Dominic Sena 1993): Excitement adventure... and unimaginable terror await on the road to Kalifornia. Brad Pitt is outstanding and Juliette Lewis is utterly heartbreakingly convincing in this chilling psychological thriller co-starring David Duchovny and Michelle Forbes. When urban intellectuals Brian (Duchovny) and Carrie (Forbes) set out a cross-country trip to research a book about serial killers they share the ride with a couple they barely know - Early Grayce (Pitt) and his girlfriend Adele (Lewis). Locked in a car hurtling westword the four travelers struggle to find some common ground. But when they finally do connect Early's violent nature abruptly emerges and the petrified Brian and Carrie realise they don't need to go very far to learn about ruthless killers... because they're already face to face with one!

  • All About Eve [1950]All About Eve | DVD | (18/02/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

Alfred Hitchcock famously observed that movies should be more than just picture postcards of people talking. Sometimes, though, dialogue is all that's needed. Joseph L. Mankiewicz's immaculately scripted All About Eve is a case in point. There are no special effects (unless one considers Marilyn Monroe's wiggle or a scene in which a car breaks down). What the movie offers instead is some of the most coruscating one-liners ever committed to celluloid. The top-name cast certainly know how to put Mankiewicz's words across. Anne Baxter is all doe-eyed charm as Eve, the ruthless aspiring actress who passes herself off as a little girl lost. George Sanders (eminent character actor and the voice of Shere Khan the tiger in The Jungle Book) shows his customary mellowness of sneer as Addison De Witt, theatre critic and professional cynic ("a venomous foot louse" as he's characterised) who helps push Eve up the greasy pole toward success, if not happiness. Best of all is Bette Davis, a soured but still resplendent stage diva, who takes Eve under her wing. ("I'll admit I've seen better days but I'm still not to be had for the price of a cocktail--like a salted peanut", she tells her lover.) The plotting and double-dealing on the screen, described in Sam Staggs' All About All About Eve: The Complete Behind-the-Scenes Story of the Bitchiest Film Ever Made, were matched by what went on behind the scenes. Davis heartily loathed fellow actress Celeste Holm who--ironically enough--plays her best friend. She fell in love with another co-star, the handsome, good-looking Gary Merrill, whom she later married. Backstage dramas are often self-indulgent and stagy affairs, but this one dazzles. --Geoffrey Macnab

NO MAN ON EARTH COULD GET HIM OUT OF PRISON ALIVE. SEVEN WOMEN WILL TRY. Starring legendary actors Oliver Reed (Gladiator, The Brood) and George Kennedy (The Delta Force and The Naked Gun series), Hired to Kill is an essential slice of 90s action fare featuring guns, girls and a plethora of budget-busting explosions for good measure. Action movie staple Brian Thompson (whose brief turn in 1984s The Terminator led to a starring role in the 1986 Sylvester Stallone vehicle Cobra) stars as Frank Ryan, a mercenary sent to track down a rebel leader in hostile territory. Posing as a fashion designer, he wont be going it alone, as he'll be aided by seven beautiful but deadly female fighters. Whilst the opportunity to see Oliver Reed chewing up the scenery behind an elaborate moustache merits the price of the admission alone, Hired to Kill is also noteworthy as being co-directed by Nico Mastorakis the man behind such cult favourites as Island of Death and The Zero Boys. Paths Of Glory: Safe in their picturesque chateau behind the front lines the French General Staff passes down a direct order to Colonel Dax: take the Ant Hill at any cost. A blatant suicide mission the attack is doomed to failure. Covering up their fatal blunder the Generals order the arrest of three innocent soldiers charging them with cowardice and mutiny. Dax a lawyer in civilian life rises to the men's defense but soon realizes that unless he can prove that the Generals were to blame nothing less than a miracle will save his clients from the firing squad. The Killer's Kiss: Stanley Kubrick's second film Killer's Kiss made the world take notice. The young moviemaker won acclaim for this dazzling film noir about a struggling New York boxer (Jamie Smith) whose life is imperiled when he protects a nightclub dancer (Irene Kane) from her gangster boss (Frank Silvera). ""Using his camera as a sandpaper block Kubrick has stripped away the veneer from the prizefight and dancehall worlds "" the New York Mirror proclaimed. Killer's Kiss not only lends considerable insight into future Kubrick classics - such as The Killing and Full Metal Jacket - but is also a remarkable film in its own right: the boxing match may be the most vicious this side of Raging Bull and the famed final battle remains an action tour-de-force.
