At the risk of offending hard core yogaphiles who disapproved of Geri Halliwell's common touch, it's difficult to sneer at Geri Body Yoga--the follow-up to her first yoga offering. Every detail, from the ace location in California to clear simple instructions by teacher Katy Appleton, makes for an exceptional quality production. Thankfully, this time round the incessant Geri-babbling is limited, though there is considerable cheeky flirting with the camera. Still, Geri's body looks far from painfully thin, and it's reassuring to see a star who isn't flaunting a surgically-enhanced cleavage. The graceful Appleton, a former dancer, deftly combines demonstrating and correcting Geri. Beginner Nate in the background looks like the production runner who was dragged in at the last minute, but doesn't do too badly. Despite excellent camera angles and seamless editing that make the routine easy to follow, this isn't yoga for total beginners. Instead of a slow start, Appleton kicks in with a more interesting warm-up than usual. The all-round yoga session moves onto an energetic Sun and Moon section, the mentally challenging Strength, the intense Bliss, and the final Chill. Appleton takes a classic approach and adapts it to appeal to fast urban living. The added Geri factor makes this ideal yoga for the Heat magazine reader. On the DVD: Geri Body Yoga on disc has a 14-minute location film which takes us from Geri's West Hollywood apartment to behind the scenes of the filming with producer/director Steve Kemsley. The transformation of Cloudy Malibu in California, from a simple location to a spa style makes great viewing. The DVD also enables you to customise your own yoga session if you don't have time to do the full 90-minute session. --Lorna V

  • Geri Yoga [2001]Geri Yoga | DVD | (12/05/2003) from £4.98   |  Saving you £5.01 (100.60%)   |  RRP £9.99

Geri Halliwell's transformation from Spice Girl to hip babe owes as much to her taking up yoga--a step she shares with us in Geri Yoga--as it does to revamping her wardrobe. Where Madonna and Sting have led the craze in this field, Geri has decided to show us all the yoga way. The 90-minute Geri Yoga features yoga teacher Katy Appleton presenting two warm up sections, a core Hatha yoga class, relaxation, along with an interview with Geri on yoga as a lifestyle. The entire session appears unscripted, which means it captures the spontaneity of a lesson, yet it's presented in a slick manner from a modern airy studio. A former dancer with the English National Ballet, Katy Appleton's confident poise and ease diffuses Geri the star. Appleton manages to balance her instructions and attention between Tina (the beginner in the sessions) and the advanced Geri, enabling viewers to see how they can progress. Yoga aficionados will be impressed by the precision of Appleton's teaching and horrified by Geri's inane babbling. Unless you're a die-hard Geri fan who can forgive the inappropriate references to calories, you'll be waiting for Appleton to release Yoga without Geri. On the DVD: Geri fans will lap up the extended interview, while non Geri fans will be thankful for the isolated music score. There is also an additional session geared to re-energising and revitalising body and mind. --Lorna V

  • Spice World - the Movie [1997]Spice World - the Movie | DVD | (01/10/1999) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

One of the reasons that the Spice Girls remain so much fun is that in the great British tradition, they don't take themselves too seriously. Like The Beatles before them, the girls are more than happy to take pot-shots at their own manufactured image, something that Spiceworld: The Movie revels in. It doesn't hurt, of course, that plenty of others are along for the ride: Richard E. Grant chews scenery as the road manager; Meat Loaf is the kindly, ever-reliable bus driver; Elvis Costello (!) makes a tongue-in-cheek cameo; and Roger Moore is... well, bizarre. The plot, as such, is merely a convenience, somehow tying together the girls' first-ever live concert, a pregnant friend, a documentary film crew, a non-Spice love story, and something or other about a tabloid photographer. But that's not the point--what matters here is a surprisingly deft touch by director Bob Spiers and a script that refuses to take anything too seriously; the result is a gentle self-parody that knows just how far to take the joke. --Randy Silver
