With his Missa solemnis the composer broke with all conventions for the composition of a mass creating a work that went beyond the normal framework of the liturgy. His treatment and interpretation of the text creates the impression of a coherent set of events and as such the work distances itself from the normal liturgical procedures becoming instead the main focus of interest. In his introduction to the performance given in the Cologne Cathedral as part of the World Youth Day 2005 Pope Benedict XVI states: The Missa solemnis bears overwhelming witness to an unceasing search for belief that refuses to turn its back on God.

Gilbert & George are two people but one artist. Their remarkable partnership is among the most consistent and long lasting in the history of art. In this fascinating and revealing film the self-proclaimed living sculptures join Tim Marlow in an exclusive walk round their Major Exhibition at Tate Modern and talk frankly about art and life. They discuss why they dislike religion and the countryside how they went about photographing their own bodily fluids why they have always worn suits and how they have felt shunned by the art establishment and the media. Since meeting at St. Martin's School of Art in 1967 and resolving to make 'art for all' Gilbert & George have pushed at the boundaries of art and society. The Dirty Words Pictures of the mid '70s shocked many at the time and more recent series have provoked revulsion and accusations of blasphemy as well as being critically lauded. This film is a fascinating insight into their world and is in itself an important document of their life and work.
TO GIVE SOMEONE A CHILD, HE WOULD STOP AT NOTHING. They called him The Baby Maker, and to married couples desperate to have children but unable to conceive, he seemed like the answer to their prayers. Greta Garbo and John Gilbert star in this classic silent melodrama about a love triangle between two boyhood friends and the amoral seductress who comes between them. Best friends Leo (Gilbert) and Ulrich (Lars Hanson) are cadets at a military academy when Leo falls madly in love with the gorgeous and aristocratic Countess Felicitas von Kletzingk (Garbo). However Felicitas neglects to tell him that she has a husband who upon discovering the affair challenges Leo to a duel. Leo kills von Kletzingk and is sentenced to five years of foreign service in Africa. Felicitas promises to wait for her brave young lover and Leo asks Ulrich to look after the grieving widow until his return. After three years Leo returns to discover that his bosom buddy has married Felicitas in his absence. She rekindles her illicit romance with Leo but refuses to give up the comforts of married life with the now wealthy Ulrich. Determined to have them both Felicitas drives the former friends into a deadly rivalry that culminates in a beautifully filmed finale that director Clarence Brown shoots almost entirely in silhouette. The use of inclement weather to invoke tragedy and mystery in the film contributes to the silent beauty of this MGM classic. Greta Garbo gives an incendiary performance as the smoldering femme fatale; she and John Gilbert supposedly began their torrid real-life affair while filming this movie. FLESH AND THE DEVIL based on the novel THE UNDYING PAST by Hermann Sudermann is a film that should not be missed.
The Speckled Band (Dir. Jack Raymond 1931): Helen Stoner becomes concerned when she hears a mysterious whistle - a sound her sister complained about right before her death. Sounds like a case of Holmes (Raymond Massey) and Watson (Athole Stewart). The Sign Of Four (Dir. Graham Cutts 1932): In this classic murder-mystery an escaped killer embarks on a ruthless quest to track down a missing treasure as well as the man who cheated him out of it.
You have to credit the folks who put this double bill together. The Brain from Planet Arous, a low-budget alien invasion 1958 film, is one of those programmes that lingers in the memory as much for its title and impressively ludicrous giant-staring-transparent-brain monster as for its poverty row dramatics, in which the usually stiff John Agar grins evilly and flashes contact lenses when possessed by the creature and a good guy brain shows up to take over his dog to thwart the renegade cerebrum's plan for world domination. For this release, Brain is teamed with its original co-feature, a movie so bad you wouldn't buy it on its own but whose presence here is a pleasing extra. Whereas Brain from Planet Arous delivers exactly what its title promises, Teenage Monster is a cheat: rather than feature a mutant 1950s delinquent in a leather jacket, it's a melodramatic Western in which prospector's widow Anne Gwynne keeps her hulking caveman-like son (who seems to be well into middle-age) hidden, only for a scheming waitress to use the goon in her murder schemes. Brain is snappily directed, even when staging disasters well beyond its budget, while Teenage Monster drags and chatters and moans until its flat finale. On the DVD: The Brain from Planet Arous/Teenage Monster double bill disc is a solid showing for such marginal items, featuring not only the trailers for these attractions but a clutch of other 1950s sci-fi pictures (Phantom from Space, Invaders from Mars, etc.) and a bonus episode ("The Runaway Asteroid") from a studio-bound, live-broadcast juvenile space opera of the early 50s (Tom Corbett, Space Cadet) in which hysterical types in a capsule break off from the space programme to deliver ringing endorsements of gruesome-looking breakfast foods. --Kim Newman
Farewell To Arms (Dir. Frank Borzage 1932): Ernest Hemingway's tragic wartime romance comes to vivid life in this classic 1932 film starring Oscar winners Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes. The cataclysm of WW1 sets the stage for an impassioned story of star-crossed love between a daring American ambulance driver (Cooper) and an English nurse (Hayes) in an army hospital. The tumult of war conspires to push the pair together and then wrench them apart in what becomes an ultimate tes
