Jean Epstein's Coeur Fidle (True Heart) established the great French filmmaker as one of the most inventive directors of the (then still silent) art form. A pared-down tale of a barmaid oppressed by an exploitative foster family who attempt to push her into the arms of an unscrupulous regular-about-town Marie's heart (exuberantly vivified by Gina Mars) belongs as far as she's concerned to the tenderly blank Jean (Lon Mathot)... Coeur Fidle drives its simple story (which with its infamous and exhilarating carousel sequence helped pave the way for he narrative tradition of such Murnau masterworks as Sunrise and City Girl) on into the realm of what might be considered an early incarnation of French poetic realism - all while still anticipating Epstein's magical post-surrealist later works.

  • The Forsyte Saga [2002]The Forsyte Saga | DVD | (13/05/2002) from £6.32   |  Saving you £13.67 (216.30%)   |  RRP £19.99

Granada Television's adaptation of The Forsyte Saga achieved the seemingly impossible in Spring 2002, matching the BBC's 35-year-old black-and-white classic version with a richly cast and superbly directed take on John Galsworthy's first two novels. The success of these six 90-minute episodes proved that despite the current emphasis on mini-series and dramas developed around the "hot" actor of the moment, our appetite--and attention span--still craves ensemble pieces which are given the space and time to develop in today’s focus-group-led scheduling. It also demonstrates that nothing generates television gold like a compelling family drama crammed with lust, rape, class conflict and the insuperable power of money. The Forsyte Saga is nothing if not superior soap opera. It could all have gone horribly wrong, haunted by the spectre of its BBC predecessor--a television legend for anyone over 40. Instead, it succeeds entirely on its own merits with scarcely a weak link; from Stephen Mallatratt's taut and fluid script to David Moore's carefully measured, seamess direction. Risks were taken to banish the old ghosts, particularly in the casting. In the event, Damian Lewis' repressed Soames and Gina McKee as his ill-matched bride, the enigmatic Irene, are inspired choices delivering complex portraits of unhappy, damaged human beings who deserve our sympathy. In a sea of marvellous cameos and splendid acting, the top honours go to Corin Redgrave and Rupert Graves for their hauntingly sensitive interpretations of Old and Young Jolyon, as well as to Amanda Root's increasingly exasperated Winifred; and Gillian Kearney's sharply intelligent and worldly June. All rounded characters without a weakly written cipher in sight. --Piers Ford

  • Coupling: Complete Series 1Coupling: Complete Series 1 | DVD | (17/09/2001) from £12.98   |  Saving you £7.01 (54.01%)   |  RRP £19.99

Coupling is a witty, instantly addictive series that charts the tangled sex lives of a close-knit group comprising "exes and best friends": womaniser Jack, hapless nice guy Steve, "strange and disturbing" Jeff, uninhibited Susan, neurotic Sally and manipulative Jane. The obvious frame of reference is Friends (Steve and Susan are the Ross and Rachel equivalent), but this series also echoes Seinfeld in its coinage of catchphrases and plot lines (in episode one, Steve tries to dump Jane, who refuses to accept). But it's no mere British clone of US sitcoms: Coupling has its own fresh and provocative take on relationships. At one point, a furious Susan discovers that Patrick not only had a videotape of the former couple having sex, but that he also taped over her. --Donald Liebenson

  • Beautiful Joe [2000]Beautiful Joe | DVD | (07/10/2002) from £6.97   |  Saving you £-3.98 (-133.10%)   |  RRP £2.99

Beautiful Joe is a well-intentioned film. The problem is that it tries for both comedy and drama, and succeeds in neither. Amiable Irishman Joe (Billy Connolly), after one of the worst days imaginable, decides to leave his adopted New York home and seek adventure. Unfortunately, he runs into Hush (Sharon Stone) and gets "Far More Adventure than He Bargained For". Stone's character is the standard beautiful-but-messed-up-woman-who-needs-rescuing that is for some mystifying reason supposed to be appealing. And yes, of course she has a mute son who just might speak if only he had the right reason. Stone is "stretching" herself here, and is clearly eager to play a character: she mugs, she drawls, she wiggles and she cries. Not a scrap of scenery escapes her gullet; at times her attempts at comedy actually become sort of upsetting. Ally McBeal's Gil Bellows turns in a similarly inept and cartoonish "comic" performance. Beautiful Joe's one saving grace is Connolly, who manages to rise above his fellow cast members and the bizarre editing to turn in a charming, dignified performance. --Ali Davis, Amazon.com
