    In November 1971 Ginger Baker the legendary drummer of Cream and Blind Faith decided to set up a recording studio in Lagos then the capital of Nigeria Baker being one of the first rock musicians to realise the potential of African music. He also decided that it would be a rewarding musical experience to travel to Nigeria overland across the Sahara desert - a journey that would lead him into a number of adventures. This film by Tony Palmer follows Ginger Baker's odyssey as he makes his journey and finally arrives in Nigeria to set up his studio which would run successfully through the seventies as a facility for both local and western musicians (Paul McCartneys Wings recorded Band On The Run there).

    In August 2009 legendary rock drummer Ginger Baker (of Graham Bond Organisation Cream Blind faith Airforce Baker-Gurvitz Army et al) miraculously reached his 70th Birthday. In October he also published his long awaited autobiography Hellraiser' (pub: John Blake) a book that for various reasons has taken him over twenty-years to complete. To coincide with these two momentous events a gig with special friends' was held at London's Jazz Cafe on 4th November 2009. This CD & DVD commemorates this historic & prestigious event & invites you to share the music & atmosphere of the venue. Ginger demonstrates his musical fluidity & prowess with a range of numbers spanning the back catalogue of his phenomenal career. He is helped in this by guitarist/singer Chris Goss (Masters of Reality) bassist extraordinaire Jonas Helborg percussionist Dodoo Abass world renowned saxophonist Peter King along with Ginger's daughter Leda Baker (Rubella Ballet/various) on guitar/backing vocals. For the last two numbers Ginger is joined by his surprise' guest & very special' friend Steve Winwood in a moving reconciliation that sees them play two show-stopping Blind Faith numbers and re winds time to when they last played together in Ginger Bakers Airforce in 1970.

    After the sucess of Cream and Blind Faith Ginger's next musical stop was his own band Ginger Baker's Airforce who released two albums of part studio part live recordings. The band also performed in front of the cameras for German television and the extended performance has rarely been seen in full since it was taped in late 1970. This in studio perfromance which took place at almost the end of the bands creative life captures the third and final incarnation of Airforce following the departure of Steve Winwood Ric Grech and Chris Wood who had returned to Traffic by this time and Denny Laine and Trevor Burton who had returned to their own band Balls. The line up for this performance consists of Ginger Baker: drums Graham Bond: vocals Hammond Saxes Ken Craddock: organ/guitar/ vocals Steve Gregory: tenor sax/flute Bud Beadle: saxes Colin Gibson: bass Aliki Ashman: vocals Diane Stewart: vocals Speedy Acquaye: congas. This studio date was the only date played by the band in October 1970 although this line up would return to Germany later in December for two more concerts. These would be the final concerts in Germany however for the Airforce before the band split. The performance captured by the cameras that October day in 1970 features amongst others the Cream track Sunshine Of Your Love both as part of an extended jam which included Early In The Morning a featured track from the first Airforce album and also later in the set as a stand alone performance and 12 Gates Of The City a Graham Bond composition which featured on the second Airforce album.
