Air Buddies The canine star of Air Bud and its host of sequels is on the screen again, but this time Buddy, his girlfriend Molly and their human owners Noah and Henry have their hands and paws full with a litter of five mischievous puppies that talk. From Budderball who's obsessed with food, to the meditating Bud-Dha and the dirt-loving Mudbud, each of the puppies is as unique as a sibling can be. When it comes time to adopt the young puppies into new families, humans and dogs alike are distraught and the puppies decide to run away. Enter a spoiled rich boy named Bartleby who wants Air Bud as a birthday present, a dim-witted cousin, and a doltish thug employed by Bartleby's father, and mayhem prevails as Buddy and Molly get dog-napped and Noah, Henry, and the runway puppies all set out to rescue them. As the chase winds over the river, through the woods, to the drive in movie, and straight through the farmyard, slapstick comedy and satire reig! n and the whole gang learns an important lesson about the value of teamwork, love, and courage. While children ages 3 to 10 will delight in the capers of these cute talking puppies, most adults will find the plot predictable and the action less than riveting. Talent includes Don Knotts, Richard Karn, and Michael Clarke Duncan. --Tami Horiuchi Snow Buddies The Buddies puppies have been a great team since birth and now that Buddha, Mudbud, Rosebud, Budderball, and B'Dawg have all been adopted by various well-matched families throughout Fernfield Washington, they've each developed a comfortable routine with their new owners. After being chastised by Ms. Mittens (voiced by Whoopi Goldberg) for chasing her kitten, B'Dawg and the rest of the Buddies meet up in the park for a game of ball, but Budderball leads them astray after spotting a truck full of ice cream. What none of them expects after their all-you-can-eat ice cream binge is that they will soon end up parachute dropped into Alaska with what's left of the ice cream shipment. After a night spent alone in a strangely white and very cold world, they are befriended by a young husky dog named Shasta (voiced by Dylan Sprouse) whose young owner Adam (Dominic Scott Kay) wants nothing more in life than to assemble a sled dog team and compete in a dogsled race across Alaska. Assuming that the Buddies are the answer to Adam's prayers for a sled dog team, Shasta convinces the Buddies to race and enlists the legendary sled dog Talon (voiced by Kris Kristofferson) to train them all, while Adam pours over his father's old sledding journal and single-handedly constructs a sled that's the perfect size for him and his team. Adam secretly enters the race against his father's wishes and thus begins a perilous, but exhilarating journey that teaches everyone involved a lot about teamwork, faith, and the importance of helping others. While many aspects of this film are completely unbelievable, the talking Buddies are adorable, the plot is significantly improved over the movie's predecessor Air Buddies, and the wholesome message will appeal to children and adults alike. --Tami Horiuchi

Henry Selick’s Monkeybone is another of the director’s brave experiments in combining various forms of animation following his successes with The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach. Two-dimensional, stop-motion, CGI and muppetry effects whizz by with casual dazzle, but sometimes a collection of great ideas isn’t just enough for moviegoers, and audiences summarily dismissed Monkeybone at the cinema. Shame really, because the eye-popping design deserves as big a screen as possible to drink it all in. Adapted from a graphic novel the story concerns cartoonist Stu Miley (a suitably schizophrenic Brendan Fraser) who finds himself in a hellish purgatory called Downtown after a freak car accident puts him in a coma. Once there, he must find a way to cheat Death in the person of Whoopi Goldberg. There are complications, however. In the real world his girlfriend (Bridget Fonda) is battling to prevent his family pulling the plug, and his comic character alter ego Monkeybone has come to life as a randy stop-motion whirligig of bad taste and ideas. Although visually the film is a feast of inventive ideas--the amazing look of the Pyjama Party and the Land of Death are truly impressive--ultimately Monkeybone stands or falls by its sense of humour. But then it’s all a matter of taste. If the sight of a possessed organ donor jumping off the operating table and running around with a broken neck isn’t for you, avoid. If seeing Fraser ham it up as he’s enjoyed doing before in the likes of George of the Jungle, then enjoy!--Paul Tonks

Even if (when) more big-screen adventures come along, this Star Trek DVD Movies Collection will remain a fitting memento of this astonishingly long-running franchise. Containing all 10 movies from The Motion Picture (1979) to Nemesis (2003), this box set charts the voyages of the USS Enterprise(s) from the original ship's first major refit since its legendary five-year mission to the last outing for the Enterprise E in the next century. After this, there will be new ships and new crews. The most famous starship in the galaxy has finally retired. Along the way, there have been many highs and just a few lows. The Motion Picture's Director's Edition solved many of the theatrical release's problems. Its follow-up, The Wrath of Khan, is still regarded as the series' finest hour. Movies III and IV chart Spock's fall and resurrection in quasi-religious terms, but also add welcome humour in The Voyage Home. Taken together II, III and IV make for a satisfyingly self-contained trilogy, which is one reason why the next entry, The Final Frontier, seemed like a disappointment. Khan director Nicholas Meyer returned for the superior VI, The Undiscovered Country, allowing the original crew to sign-off in style. Attempting to please fans old and new, the messy Generations ended up pleasing almost no one. Thankfully, the second Next Generation film, First Contact, comes in a close second to Khan in the series-best stakes. Neither Insurrection or Nemesis could quite match what had gone before, but both were solidly entertaining adventures nonetheless. On the DVDs: The Star Trek DVD Movies Collection is a 10-disc set complete with booklet and postcard-size Nemesis film stills. However, only the first four movies are presented in their Special Edition versions--these have the same content as the feature discs of the separately released two-disc sets--and the Nemesis disc also contains a commentary, documentaries and deleted scenes. Movies V-IX are bare-bones releases, though, with no extra content to speak of. Fans will therefore not find this box set to be a substitute for the individual Special Edition versions. --Mark Walker
