  • Strauss: Elektra [1989]Strauss: Elektra | DVD | (03/07/2000) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £24.99

Richard Strauss's wildest and most passionate opera gets an almost ideal performance in this 1989 production with three great female singers at the height of their powers. Marton is terrifyingly unreasonable as Elektra, determined to mourn her dead father in the face of her mother who had him killed, and to hope and pray for the vengeance that her brother will one day bring. Told he is dead, her emotional collapse is equally total, and her eventual self-destructive dance of triumph is a bittersweet ecstasy of anger and joy. Studer gives the sometimes underplayed role of the normal, compromising "feminine" sister the weight and sympathy Strauss intended it to have. Fassbaender is electric as Clytemnestra, collapsing under the weight of her guilt and paranoia, but still scarily sexy and regal in her manipulation of those around her. Abbado's conducting is electric--from the opening "Agamemnon" chords to the final dying fall of Elektra's dance, he never puts a foot wrong or misjudges the pacing of this most difficult of opera scores. The DVD has subtitles in English, German and French. --Roz Kaveney

Marvel comics fans rejoice! X-Men (Dir. Bryan Singer 2000): Born into a world filled with prejudice are children who possess extraordinary and dangerous powers - the result of unique genetic mutations. Cyclops unleashes bolts of energy from his eyes. Storm can manipulate the weather at will. Rogue absorbs the life force of anyone she touches. But under the tutelage of Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) these and other outcasts learn to harness their powers for the good of mankind. Now they must protect those who fear them as the nefarious Magneto (Ian McKellen) who believes humans and mutants can never co-exist unveils his sinister plan for the future... X-Men 2 (Dir. Bryan Singer 2003): Mutants continue their struggle against a society that fears and distrusts them. Their cause becomes even more desperate following an incredible attack in The White House by an as yet undetermined assailant possessing extraordinary abilities. The shocking attack renews the political and public outcry for a Mutant Registration Act and an anti-mutant movement now led by William Stryker (Brian Cox) a wealthy former Army commander who is rumored to have experimented on mutants. Stryker's mutant work is somehow tied to Logan's mysterious and forgotten past. As Wolverine searches for clues to his origin Stryker puts into motion his anti-mutant program - launching an attack on Xavier's mansion. Magneto newly escaped from his plastic prison proposes a partnership with the X-Men to combat their common and formidable enemy: Stryker. With the fates of Xavier mankind - and mutantkind - in their hands the X-Men face their most dangerous mission ever! Daredevil: Director's Cut (Dir. Mark Steven Johnson 2003): When justice is blind it knows no fear. 30 minutes of never before seen footage seamlessly edited back into the film creating a whole new sub-plot featuring a brand new character! Ben Affleck is Matt Murdock a.k.a Daredevil. As a young boy he lost his sight in a chemical accident which left him with his other senses superhumanly enhanced (and some incredible acrobatic skills). Flash forward and Matt is working by day as a pro bono lawyer (with partner Jon Favreau) and by night as a righteous avenger. The plot sees New York supercriminal Kingpin (Michael Clarke Duncan) calling on Irish assassin Bullseye (Colin Farrell) to take care of some business involving the father of Jennifer Garner's Elektra (with whom Matt falls head over heels in love). Daredevil is a shadowy comic book fantasy that provides plenty of fast-paced high-kicking action. Elektra (Dir. Rob Bowman 2005): Looks can kill. From the pages of Marvel Comics creator of 'X-Men' and 'Spider-Man' comes 'Elektra'. In the ultimate battle between good and evil stands a warrior who makes the choice that tips the balance... Elektra (Garner) is a strong mysterious and sexy action heroine; a lethal synthesis of grace and power. Not long after recovering from seemingly mortal wounds Elektra has severed all ties with the world living only for her next assignment. But in an unexpected turn of events she is forced to make a decision that can take her life in a new direction or destroy her...

They're the latest in a long line legends who've worn the white of England while at Liverpool. It's a line stretching all the way back to 1897 through the golden era of the 1970's when being an Englishman at Anfield was virtually a passport to the national side right up to the present day and the undoubted highlight of September 2001 in which Germany were hammered by five goal from Liverpool players: Owen bagged a hat-trick Gerrard struck a thunderous finish and Heskey rounded off a perfect evening with the fifth. Goals and action from the great names of the past and the heroes of the present combine to tell the story of the Liverpool legends who have given their all for club and country.

Ice Age: A star-studded cast provides the voices for the prehistoric creatures in this computer-animated feature set 20 000 years ago as the Ice Age approaches. Seemingly anti-social Manny a woolly mammoth (voiced by Ray Romano) acts as if he just wants to be left alone. When he meets Sid (voiced by John Leguizamo) a sloth the two become unlikely traveling companions. The plot thickens when the duo finds a human infant and decides to try to return the child to its herd. Manny slowly but surely reveals his heart of gold while Sid continues to provide comic relief. Diego (voiced by Denis Leary) a saber-tooth tiger with ulterior motives soon joins them in their search for the humans. Ultimately this group of misfits becomes its own herd learning about friendship and loyalty as they brave snow ice freezing temperatures predators hail and even boiling lava pits. All the while a saber-tooth squirrel Scrat provides comic relief as he valiantly struggles with an acorn. A well-written humorous script and endearing characters mesh well with the state-of-the-art technology and effects. Other stars lending their voices to the feature include Goran Visnjic Jack Black and Jane Krakowski. Chicken Run: Trouble is brewing down on Mrs Tweedy's poultry farm: the chickens are revolting (yes that old chestnut) and clucky hen Ginger (voiced by Julia Sawalha) is planning her latest coop um coup. Getting one or two birds out of the farm is no problem whatsoever. Unfortunately Ginger plans to get everyone out at the same time and when one of the would-be escapees happens to be kind-hearted but bird-brained Babs (Jane Horrocks) Ginger is fighting a losing battle. Despotic owner Mrs Tweedy (Miranda Richardson) plans to turn the birds into the tender filling of her new range of homemade chicken pies and is waiting until the hens have fattened up. Ginger knows that time is of the essence but every daring scheme ends in disaster. Ginger needs a miracle. And fast. As she contemplates her next escape attempt with Scottish engineering genius Mac (Lynn Ferguson) Ginger sees their salvation in the form of a rooster named Rocky (Mel Gibson) if the cocksure Rocky can teach all of the hens how to fly then they can all fly out of Tweedy's clutches before she gives them the chop.

The lifelong dream of inventor astronaut and scientist Dr. Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd) is close to being realized. He is spearheading a trip to outer space to the center of a cosmic storm. There he hopes to unlock the secrets of the human genetic codes for the benefit of all humanity. Extensive government grant cutbacks nearly dashed the visionary's hopes of the historic flight until Reed accepted a financing deal with his old college rival Victor Von Doom (Julian McMahon) now a billionaire industrialist. Reed's crew for the mission includes his best friend astronaut Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis); Sue Storm (Jessica Alba) Von Doom's director of genetic research and Reed's ex-girlfriend; and Sue's hot-headed younger brother pilot Johnny Storm (Chris Evans). With benefactor Von Doom in tow the four set off for the exploration of a lifetime. The mission is uneventful - until Reed discovers a miscalculation of the speed of the approaching storm. Within minutes the event threshold is upon them. The space station is engulfed by turbulent clouds of cosmic radiation which genetically transforms the crew. Their DNA is irrevocably altered - and so is their future. Back on earth the effects of the exposure are quickly revealed. Reed gains the ability to stretch and contort his body into any shape he can imagine and as leader of the group is given the name Mr. Fantastic; Sue is able to render herself invisible and to create and project powerful force fields as Invisible Woman; Johnny becomes known as The Human Torch as he can now engulf his body in flames and take flight at will; and Ben whose freakish transmutation is the most shocking becomes an orange-coloured rock-like superhumanly strong creature The Thing. Together they turn tragedy into triumph and catastrophe into coalition using their unique and formidable powers to thwart the evil plans of their now steely-eyed iron-fisted nemesis Dr. Doom...
