By the time he recorded An Audience with Kenneth Williams in 1982, the comic actor had virtually given up the stage and screen and was well into his late career as a raconteur. As a potted hour of autobiography, it's a slick, polished affair. Fans will be familiar with the anecdotes about Noel Coward and piles, Edith Evans and the farting waiter and of course, the Carry On films. But perhaps the most notable thing is that while his posthumously published diaries revealed a dark and bitter melancholia, often aimed viciously at others, he was a very generous performer. These are mainly tales about other people; Williams rarely puts himself centre stage other than in his masterly telling. And there is real warmth in his reminiscences of people like Maggie Smith, Gordon Jackson and Hattie Jacques. He was also a highly intelligent commentator on his craft. "Revue produces an eccentric, very stylised performer," he explains, talking about Smith and Fenella Fielding but clearly including himself. Although many of the stars in the audience are long since gone it's somehow reassuring to note that still, more than 20 years later, no televised evening with a celebrity is complete without Judith Chalmers and Matthew Kelly.--Piers Ford

  • The Lady And The Highwayman [1987]The Lady And The Highwayman | DVD | (29/07/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £4.99

The Lady and the Highwayman, produced by Lew Grade as part of a series of Barbara Cartland dramatisations in 1987, contains all the ingredients that made Cartland's unique style of romantic fiction so successful. The highwayman in question, known as Silver Blade, is actually an aristocratic outlaw played by a youthful Hugh Grant in a bouffant mullet wig. The lady is Panthea (Lysette Anthony), delicate but firm of purpose, who knows her man when she sees him. It's Restoration England, so the frocks are fabulous. But Cartland's pretensions to historical accuracy evaporate when she makes Charles II's mistress, Barbara Castlemaine (Dynasty's Emma Samms), the villainess of the piece. From there, it's a freewheeling ride of Robin Hood-inspired philanthropy, duplicitous cousins and some uncomfortably fetishistic shots of the rituals and instruments of execution, although everybody is rescued in time for the romantic soft-focus finale. Full of splendidly self-indulgent performances from the likes of Claire Bloom, John Mills and Michael York, The Lady and the Highwayman is a feast of thespian ham. Somehow, the cast triumph over the banality of the basic material. On the DVD: The Lady and the Highwayman is presented in 4:3 aspect ratio with a standard Dolby Digital stereo soundtrack. With an eye on the international market, it looks and feels like any lush mini-series of the 1980s. There are no extras. --Piers Ford

An instant hit in 1977, The Professionals was a fast-moving and occasionally sharp-shooting action series about a couple of cool dudes in a fictional secret service organisation, CI5. The creation of Avengers veterans Brian Clemens and Albert Fennell it was often gritty stuff, leavened by the mildly subversive attitudes of Bodie (Lewis Collins) and Doyle (Martin Shaw) who ultimately are always loyal to their gruff boss George Cowley (Gordon Jackson). Helped by witty, if rampantly sexist, dialogue and trousers of sterility defying tightness, Bodie and Doyle enjoyed a good run as 1970s sex symbols. Jackson’s often exasperated Cowley kept them in line with just the right degree of Puritanical steel. The first series set the standard for five successful years, milking the dramatic potential of a rich gamut of scenarios, from international espionage to racism and religious evangelism; Bodie and Doyle usually being called upon to protect a controversial figure from the assassin's bullet. Shaw would later dismiss The Professionals for its stereotypical violence and for a long time refused to allow reruns. In fact, as cult television goes, it has weathered well. Many of its themes are as relevant today as they were then. The constantly elliptical script ("I want you to see that he's… well taken care of") is tremendous fun. And despite the macho drive, the whole thing has a camp archness which betrays its Avengers pedigree. Great for a nostalgic wallow. On the DVD: The Professionals on disc still displays the slightly ropey quality of late 1970s television film complete with brassy soundtrack. Presented in 4:3 format, the original production values disconcertingly recreate the original post-homework viewing experience. But the DVD extras are the thing here. Interactive menus allow you to drill down into the history of each of the 14 episodes, cross-referencing guest stars. And there's an appropriately camp fashion note.--Piers Ford
