The Evil Dead Trilogy in one DVD set! Evil Dead: The gruesome granddaddy of modern day horror Sam Raimi's original 1981 classic The Evil Dead has been hailed by horror writer Stephen King as the most ferociously original horror movie I have ever seen and in the UK was one of the first horror films to be labelled as a 'video nasty'. Off for a weekend of fun in a remote cabin in the woods five young friends unwittingly release a powerful force of unspeakable evil from the pages of the Necronomicon the Book of the Dead. Possession murder and dismemberment follow in rapid succession as Ash (Bruce Campbell) the one uncorrupted member of the group fights for survival against his former friends who have joined the legion of the evil dead. Evil Dead 2: The first sequel to Sam Raimi's horror masterpiece Evil Dead II sees Ash (Bruce Campbell) continuing his battle with the evil dead initially in the demon form of his girlfriend Linda (Denise Bixler). Meanwhile relatives and associates of the cabin's original owner are en route to the cabin with newly found pages from the Necronomicon. Evil Dead II manages to successfully marry outrageous comedy with nail-biting terror as Ash is forced to resort to progressively extreme measures in order to maintain his sanity and conquer the demonic forces threatening his life. Evil Dead 3: Army Of Darkness: Immediately following the events of Evil Dead II Army of Darkness finds Ash (Bruce Campbell) transported to Medieval England where the occupants of a local castle are under siege from the supernaturally evil Deadites. Hailed as the deliverer of the Necronomicon and the saviour of the living he must employ his 20th Century wits and skills to overcome his evil self before destroying his possessed medieval girlfriend and the entire Army of Darkness in a battle to save the living from the dead. Disc 4: The fourth disc in the boxed set presents the eponymous first film in The Evil Dead trilogy in its original 4x3 format (1.33:1 Full Screen Unmatted) and includes several extras exclusive to this edition making it a must-have for all Evil Dead fans and collectors.

BAFTA-winning director Ray Butt (Only Fools and Horses) takes the helm for the final two series of Spike Milligan s anarchic sketch show, recorded in front of and occasionally featuring a wide-eyed studio audience. Qs 8 and 9 were made in quick succession in 1979 and 1980 after the BBC initially delayed re-commissioning the series until the Monty Python team departed TV-land. This was despite the impact the original Q5 of 1969 had on the world of alternative comedy. At a time when Kenny Everett and Not the Nine O Clock News were further testing the limits of TV comedy, the former Goon leads a cast of co-performers including John Bluthal, Bob Todd, Julia Breck, Alan Clare and a self-parodying David Lodge in yet more surreal, outrageous and determinedly under-prepared sketches. Running gags and familiar tropes prevail, with Adolf Hitler, Arab sheiks, idiot Boy Scouts and the Royal Family subject to scattergun ridicule, while musical interludes from Spike, pianist Ed Welch and occasional guest singers age the shows a little more harshly than the main man s virulently anti-PC humour.

The latest in a long line of successful US police dramas, the forensic cop show Crime Scene Investigation varies the formula by focusing on a team of civilian scientists who work the night shift in Las Vegas, poring over crime scenes for fingerprints, blood spatters, DNA-laced mucus and (especially) maggots. Star William Petersen plays a variation of his role from Manhunter, the cool puzzle-solving genius who can rattle off mystifying speeches with aplomb, while his contrasting partner is Marg Helgenberger, cast as a single mother/ex-stripper who is as concerned with the emotional as well as the physical mess left by crime. While most US cop shows (witness NYPD Blue) tend towards soap, neglecting the cases in favour of personal crises, CSI gives its regulars enough life to make them human but is essentially puzzle-based, with individual episodes following two or three cases à la Homicide: Life on the Street. The occasional special focuses on a major job with the team investigating the slaughter of a whole family ("Blood Drops") or a death in first class on a plane over Vegas ("Unfriendly Skies"). A few continuing threads are laid down, with a recurrent villain who gets away, but will inevitably return, but on the whole these shows play pretty well as one-offs. Very high-tech in style, with lots of zooms into microscopic examinations of hair follicles or stomach contents and distinctive visualisations of the different stories told by witnesses and evidence, this is one of the best shows currently airing. On the DVD: CSI's first DVD box set contains the show's first 12 episodes: the pilot followed by "Cool Change", "Crate & Burial", "Pledging Mr Johnson"; "Friends and Lovers", "Who Are You?", "Blood Drops"; "Anonymous", "Unfriendly Skies", "Sex Lies and Larvae"; "The I-15 Murders" and "Fahrenheit 932". In addition to inventive menus, the three-disc set offers character profiles, a trailer, some B-roll on-set footage, a subtitle option, and snippet-like interviews with the cast and creatives. --Kim Newman

When this epic series was first broadcast in 1973 it redefined the gold standard for television documentary; it remains the benchmark by which all factual programming must judge itself. Originally shown as 26 one-hour programmes, The World at War set out to tell the story of the Second World War through the testimony of key participants. The result is a unique and unrepeatable event, since many of the eyewitnesses captured on film did not have long left to live. Each hour-long programme is carefully structured to focus on a key theme or campaign, from the rise of Nazi Germany to Hitler's downfall and the onset of the Cold War. There are no academic "talking heads" here to spell out an official version of history; the narration, delivered with wonderful gravitas by Sir Laurence Olivier, is kept to a minimum. The show's great coup was to allow the participants to speak for themselves. Painstaking research in the archives of the Imperial War Museum also unearthed a vast quantity of newsreel footage, including on occasion the cameraman's original raw rushes which present an unvarnished and never-before-seen picture of important events. Carl Davis' portentous main title theme and score underlines the grand scale of the enterprise. The original 26 episodes were supplemented three years later by six special programmes (narrated by Eric Porter), bringing the total running-time to a truly epic 32 hours. Now digitally remastered The World at War looks even more of an impressive achievement on DVD. Available in five volumes, each handsomely packaged double-disc set comes with a detailed menu that places the individual programmes along a chronological timeline. Better yet, chapter access is laid out to allow you to select key speeches or maps or newsreel footage. The World at War was a landmark television event; its DVD incarnation underlines its importance as an historical document. --Mark Walker
