A by-the-numbers action flick featuring a stern Arnold Schwarzenegger, Raw Deal has all the traditional traits of the genre. Schwarzenegger is a disgraced former FBI agent who winds up as sheriff of a backwater Southern town. He is given a chance to reclaim his job when the head of the Bureau offers him reinstatement if he'll go undercover to capture the mob boss responsible for killing his son. Schwarzenegger must get close enough to gain the trust of the gangster without being discovered as a mole, while gathering enough evidence to take him down. One of Schwarzenegger's early films, in which he honed his persona, Raw Deal offers up the usual quotient of gun battles and tough talk, with a trace of self-deprecating humour from its star, making it reasonably worthwhile entertainment. --Robert Lane
Dave Allen At Peace celebrates the professional life of renowned Irish comedian. Aidan Gillen plays the provocative godfather of modern stand-up. This drama focuses on the controversial comedian's forty-year career, from performing alongside his brother as a Butlin's Redcoat to becoming one of the UK and Ireland s comedy greats. Written by Stephen Russell (We're Doomed: The Dad s Army Story, Hattie, and Peaky Blinders), this film explores how Dave s comedy genius was shaped by the tragic loss of his father, his brother... and his finger. How he survived decades of the Roman Catholic Church s wrath, death threats from the IRA and a ban by Irish and Australian TV, only to have his television career end in controversy when he used the f-word in an innocuous joke.

Tilda Swinton narrates 'Galapagos' (2005) which explores the distinctive flora and fauna of the Galapagos archipelago. Charles Darwin's world within itself is the subject of this in-depth programme. The Galapagos Islands are every botanist's Shangri-La: the 13 main islands are actually underwater volcanoes and are situated at the confluence of four oceanic currents. This singular habitat combined with its isolated location has given rise to hundreds of varieties of flora and fauna found nowhere else but here. 'South Pacific' (2009) explores the vast South Pacific ocean and its many islands giving viewers the opportunity to see beyond the white sandy beaches and palm trees. Both the wildlife and the islander's way of life and rituals are examined showing how both cope with their remote environment. Highlights include spectacular sights of giant crabs that can open coconuts undersea volcanos and the use of super slow motion footage to capture the scale of some of the of the world's biggest waves. 'Nature's Great Events' (2009) chronicles some of the planet's most spectacular natural events and shows how these phenomena can transform entire landscapes drawing in millions of animals and determining their fate. The series also explains how powerful natural forces can trigger chain reactions involving everything from microscopic organisms to entire tracts of rainforest. Events featured in the series include the Pacific salmon run the greening of the Serengeti the plankton bloom in the Pacific Northwest the spring thaw in the Arctic the flooding of the Okavango Delta and the South Atlantic sardine run.
Val Kilmer stars in The Ghost and the Darkness as Lt Col John Patterson, a 19th-century Irish engineer drafted by Britain's railroad bosses to build a trestle bridge over an African river, thus expanding the empire a tiny bit more. In Tsavo, Patterson is instantly hailed for killing a man-eating lion that had been making life hell for native workers. But morale sinks when two more unstoppable big cats devour more men and destroy the project. Along comes an, expatriate American hunter (Michael Douglas) to help Patterson face the almost preternatural powers of the two killers. The script by William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) is based on fact, though the film owes more to Steven Spielberg (specifically to Jaws) than history. There are also suggestive echoes of Kipling and Conrad in the material and characters, and there are hints of emotional complexity and psychological nuance that make one wish this could have been a great film instead of a merely fun one.--Tom Keogh, Amazon.com
