The closer Jake gets to home the closer he gets to the true meaning of Christmas and the importance of family... One Magic Christmas (Dir. Phillip Borsos 1985): Christmas is a time of enchantment... when a wondrous feeling larger than life captures the soul...but not for everyone. Academy Award-Winner Mary Steenburgen stars as a young mother Ginny Grainger who is disillusioned with Christmas and finds its approach as adding only more pressures to an already stress-filled existence. Thanks to the unshakable faith of her young daughter Abbie and a guardian angel named Gideon (played by Harry Dean Stanton) Ginny's spirit of hope and Christmas is re-kindled through a miraculous yuletide experience in which she sees what life would be like if Christmas did not exist. It's clear from the opening episodes of its third season that Farscape has developed into a grown-up show. There's a new self-confidence and a new maturity here that's entirely welcome after the often wildly erratic tone of the second season. The production design and high-quality effects remain true to the show's original quirky style, although both the look and the more adult-themed scripts have become progressively darker. It's also clear that anyone who has not followed Farscape extremely closely from the very first episode of Season One will be utterly baffled by the convoluted plotting and complex character interactions. Farscape is a whole galaxy away from the clean, cosy world of Star Trek. On the DVD: Farscape's third season is being released as both standard two-disc sets and strictly limited deluxe editions: the latter are handsomely packaged with a variety of collectable extras, in this case a Farscape watch, limited edition prints and a photo album. The discs are the same as the standard Volume 3.1. --Mark Walker

Like his composing Hill's playing had an ever-present air of spontaneity and was almost completely devoid of clich''. A quirky independent film featuring some strong acting by an eclectic cast, Just Add Water captures the desolate spirit of a group of trailer park inhabitants who have little hope of ever escaping their mundane lives. Ray (Dylan Walsh, Nip/Tuck) works as a parking lot attendant who, like many of the town's inhabitants, is at the mercy of the local baby-faced drug dealer Dirk (Will Rothhaar). Flush with money from his meth business, Dirk is now the town's primary landlord and he takes a no-holds barred attitude when it comes to collecting rent from tenants who barely have enough money to survive. Trapped in an apathetic marriage to the agoraphobic Charlene, Ray enjoys some normal moments with their teenage son Eddie (Jonah Hill, Superbad). Father and son also share an experience neither would want to be reminded of when Ray tries to help Eddie lose his virginity, something Eddie clearly has issues with. Directed and written by actor Hart Bochner, Just Add Water works as an intriguing dark comedy. The casting is spot-on, with a nice appearance by Danny DeVito as a would-be oilman who could make life for these people just a little easier. --Jae-Ha Kim

With the third season well under way by now it's clear that Farscape has developed into a grown-up show. There's a new self-confidence and a new maturity here that's entirely welcome after the often wildly erratic tone of the second season. The production design and high-quality effects work remain true to the show's original quirky style, although both the look and the more adult-themed scripts have become progressively darker. It's also clear that anyone who has not followed Farscape extremely closely from the very first episode of Season One will be utterly baffled by the convoluted plotting and complex character interactions. All the principal actors know their characters inside and out by now, and delight in showing off their many weaknesses and flaws. Refreshingly, the crew of Moya are a squabbling, bickering, selfish bunch most of the time, who somehow and against expectations manage to pull together (just) at the crucial moment. The writing has matured, too, remaining as witty as ever but equally unafraid to push both genre and censorship boundaries as villains bloodily torture their victims (usually Crichton) and the main characters become more and more obsessed about their sex lives (or lack thereof). Farscape is a galaxy far, far away from the clean, cosy world of Star Trek.--Mark Walker

In The Postman Always Rings Twice, Jack Nicholson teamed up again with his Five Easy Pieces and King of Marvin Gardens director Bob Rafelson for this 1981 version of James M. Cain's hardboiled novel of lust and murder. This version takes a much grittier (and sexually explicit) approach to the material than the slick 1946 MGM version starring John Garfield and Lana Turner. Nicholson plays Frank Chambers, a drifter who happens upon a roadside diner run by Cora Papadakis (Jessica Lange) and her swarthy Greek husband, Nick (John Colicos). Sparks fly, and before you can say l'amour fou, Frank and Cora are making the beast with two backs on the kitchen table. One thing leads to another and they conspire to murder Nick. The movie is still a little too cold and distant to fully convey a hot-blooded passion that leads to murder, but it is a strangely haunting and disturbing film nevertheless. The screenplay is by David Mamet, the photography is by the great Sven Nykvist (Ingmar Bergman's cinematographer), and watch for Anjelica Huston in a supporting role. --Jim Emerson
