  During the Second World War the Germans put many of the Allied prisoners-of-war (POWs) who had proved consistent escapees together in a maximum security fortress, the very name of which became a legend. Based on the book by Colditz escapee Major Pat Reid, The Colditz Story (1957) documents the further, sometimes successful, escape attempts of these extraordinarily brave, resourceful and indomitable men. Starring John Mills, Eric Portman, Bryan Forbes and Anton Diffring, and co-written and directed by Guy Hamilton, who later made The Battle of Britain (1969), this is a sober, even-handed account, that is gripping and informative, yet not without humour. Sterling performances from the cast of stalwart actors adds up to a British cinema classic. Such is the fascination of Colditz that in 1972-3 the BBC made a very successful drama series staring Jack Hedley, Bernard Hempton, Robert Wagner and David McCallum, while in 2000 Channel 4 offered a superb three-part documentary, Escape from Colditz. In contrast to the semi-documentary feel of The Colditz Story David Lean's classic The Bridge on the River Kwai, from the same year, is an epic and powerful account of POW life in barbaric Japanese prison camps. --Gary S. He inadvertently swicthes places with the Prince a royal cat (and by luck his exact look-a-like) who has just inherited Castle Carlyle from his deceased owner Lady Eleanor this is a huge disappointment to her dastardly nephew Lord Dargis (Billy Connelly). Now living it up as the Cat of Carlyle Garfield has a butler and an international array of servants and subjects including Winston a very English bulldog; McBunny a Scottish hare; Nigel a Punjab ferret; Bolere a Sapnish bull; I Claudius a Shakepeare quoting mouse and Christophe a French goose. Meanwhile Prince is living the simple life of a commoner hitting the pubs with Jon and Oldie getting his first taste of lasagne...and loving all of it! Uneasy is the head however that wears the crown. Lord Bargis who is next in line to the estate wants Prince/Garfield out of the picture. Garfield's bigger better more pur-fect world is soon turned upside down in the tale of two kitties!

  It's tough trying to beat the 1934 version of the popular adventure-romance story, starring Leslie Howard as the 18th-century British hero who poses as a fop in London society but runs a secret mission to rescue the doomed in Robespierre's Paris. But this 1982 television version, starring Anthony Andrews (Sebastian Flyte in Brideshead Revisited) as the Pimpernel and Jane Seymour as his beloved but estranged wife, is quite a treat. Andrews and Seymour expertly capture the essence of a relationship suffering from misunderstandings and elusive passion, and there is plenty of crackle to the action sequences. Clive Donner (What's New, Pussycat?) brings some strong cinematic qualities to this television presentation. --Tom Keogh
