Barbarella is marked by the same audacity and originality fantasy humor beauty and horror cruelty and eroticism that make comic books such a favorite. The setting is the planet Lythion in the year 40 000 when Barbarella (Jane Fonda) makes a forced landing while traveling through space. She acts like a female James Bond vanquishing evil in the forms of robots and monsters. She also rewards in an uninhibited manner the handsome men who assist her in the adventure. Whether she is
In Liliana Cavani's scintillating drama a concentration camp survivor (Charlotte Rampling) discovers her ex-torturer & lover (Dirk Bogarde) working as a night porter at a hotel in postwar Vienna. Operatic and disturbing the controversial The Night Porter deftly examines the cruelty and decadence of Nazi culture.
Steven Seagal plays a Chicago cop who takes on CIA types in this action thriller from Andrew Davis (The Fugitive). Davis brings muscle to the project, including some strong set pieces that make Seagal (who also co-wrote and co-produced the film) look good. Co-stars Pam Grier and Sharon Stone also assist in this endeavour, yet nothing can really mitigate such ridiculous moments as Seagal's getting profound with a villain in his raspy monotone: "You think you're above the law. But you're not.". --Tom Keogh, Amazon.co.uk
Legendary filmmaker Ovidio G. Assonitis, whose Tentacles and Piranha II sought to cash in on the killer fish craze spawned by Jaws, first hit pay dirt in 1974 with Beyond the Door â a gloriously bonkers riff on The Exorcist featuring Emmy Award-winning actress Juliet Mills and distinguished British actor Richard Johnson. Set against the backdrop of San Francisco, Beyond the Door stars Mills as Jessica Barrett, a young mother who starts to develop strange behaviours whilst pregnant with her third child. Before you can say split pea soup, Jessica is displaying signs of full-blown demonic possession â complete with projectile vomiting and fully-rotating head! Could it be that she's carrying the child of the Antichrist himself? Described as disgusting, scary trash and maddeningly inappropriate by film critic Roger Ebert and subject to a lawsuit by Warner Bros. (who claimed copyright infringement against a certain William Friedkin film), the devilish denizens at Arrow Video have summoned up this wickedly entertaining popcorn spiller fit for Satan himself! Chuck Norris plays Det. Eddie Cusack a tough Chicago cop who battles two opposing mob gangs in this fast-paced police actioner. Norris is asked to rectify the situation when the daughter of an underworld Don is used as a pawn in an escalating drug war. Complete with dazzling martial arts action and incredible stunts!
Another Eddie Murphy action vehicle that pales in comparison to hits like Beverly Hills Cop, this standard cop-movie fare still manages to be engaging on the strength of Murphy's ease in front of a camera. Murphy plays an unorthodox hostage negotiator for the San Francisco Police Department on the trail of the criminal who killed his partner. Paired up with a bright new trainee played by Michael Rapaport (Beautiful Girls, Mighty Aphrodite), Murphy uses both his skills and his anger to hunt down the killer. A competent action movie, there are some standout moments such as a car chase culminating in a cable car shoot-out on the streets of San Francisco, and Michael Wincott's (The Crow) frightening performance as the villain. Metro offers up a standard action vehicle for Murphy to showcase his charm, as well as a moderate entertainment with some memorable moments. --Robert Lane
Winner of nine Academy Awards and almost every critic's heart, The English Patient (based on Michael Ondaatje's prizewinning novel of love and loss during World War II) is one of the most acclaimed films of modern times. Hana, a nurse (Juliette Binoche), tends to an archaeologist (Ralph Fiennes) who has been burnt to a crisp in a plane crash. As their relationship intensifies, he flashes back to his overwhelming passion for a married woman (Kristin Scott Thomas). Meanwhile, Hana begins a new romance with a man who defuses bombs (Naveen Andrews) and Willem Dafoe almost steals the show as the thumbless thief Caravaggio. The intricately layered flashback narrative, sounding the depths of the lovers' hearts, improves with repeated viewings. --Geoff Riley
