Gorillas In The Mist | DVD | (17/04/2019)
from £8.95
| Saving you £5.04 (56.31%)
| RRP Sigourney Weaver more than earned her Oscar nomination for Best Actress in Gorillas in the Mist, dominating every frame of Michael Apted's biopic about primatologist Dian Fossey. Tenderly mothering an orphaned gorilla infant or terrorising an African poacher with a staged lynching, the statuesque star is never less than fiercely focused, a glamorous warrior for animal rights. As the amateur scientist who researched and spotlighted Rwanda's endangered mountain gorillas in National Geographic, Weaver is the passionate heart that keeps an otherwise flaccid film alive. Unfortunately, the film's stodgy script and direction simply document Fossey's magnificent obsession, offering no insight into what lonely impulse of the soul led this extraordinary woman to climb up an African mountain to bond so strongly with gorillas. Cardboard characters include an eternally smiling, sexless African soulmate (John Omirah Miluwi), a perfect boyfriend (Bryan Brown) who has to be dumped in favour of gorilla-love, and stereotypical villains. Still, the African scenery is spectacular, and who can resist the cross-species thrill when the huge dark hand of Digit, Fossey's favourite, first rests in her outstretched palm? Gorillas in the Mist will please those who savour Sigourney Weaver's Amazonian fervour and the pure fire of her physical and spiritual passion--and harbour a slightly misanthropic fondness for liaisons between beauties and beasts. --Kathleen Murphy

Charlie Chaplin: The Mutual Films Collection (Limited Edition Blu-ray box set) | Blu Ray | (25/05/2015)
from £25.65
| Saving you £4.34 (16.92%)
| RRP Charlie Chaplin entered the film industry in 1914 and by 1916 was the highest paid entertainer in the world after signing a contract with the Mutual Film Corporation for a salary of $670 000. Mutual built Chaplin his very own studio and allowed him total freedom to make 12 two-reel films during a 12-month period which have been brought together for the first time on this two-disc boxset. Chaplin subsequently recognised this period of film-making as the most inventive and liberating of his career. These twelve films demonstrate the breadth of Chaplin’s abilities as both a physical slapstick actor and a subtle endearing character actor. The collection includes the slapstick custard pie fights of Behind the Screen and his first minor masterpiece The Vagabond where he successfully combines pathos and comedy to create a lyrical love story. This limited edition collection of Chaplin films has been fully restored and features music by acclaimed silent film composer Carl Davis. Bonus Features: 12 films (1916-1917) with Carl Davis scores all presented in full High Definition: The Floorwalker The Fireman The Vagabond One AM The Count The Pawnshop Behind the Screen The Rink Easy Street The Cure The Immigrant The Adventurer Alternative scores for each film by a range of composers Audio commentaries for selected films Newsreel shorts: Chaplin Signs the Mutual Contract (1916 30 secs); Charlie on the Ocean (1921 5 mins) Carl Davis interview (9 mins) Extensive booklet with essays and full film credits
Just Cause | DVD | (24/01/2000)
from £9.33
| Saving you £4.66 (49.95%)
| RRP Just Cause is a film that relies on phony plot twists and steals openly from any other thriller that it can remember. If there was a drinking game requiring players to drink during every cinematic "homage", you'd be tanked after its first 45 minutes. Take one case of racial injustice, place it in an exotic, exquisitely photographed location (the Florida Everglades), and bring in an outsider, played by a bankable star, to save the day. Make sure nothing appears as it seems. Add a couple of plot twists, some over-the-top character actors (Ed Harris, shamelessly riffing on Hannibal Lecter), stir, and serve. The big name in this case is Sean Connery, who plays a Harvard law professor summoned to the swamps by an apparently innocent death row inmate (Blair Underwood), who swears he didn't rape and kill that 11-year-old girl. He says he confessed because maverick psycho-cop Tanny Brown (Laurence Fishburne) made him play a solo game of Russian roulette. He says his Serial-killer neighbour on death row (Harris) committed the crime. Connery buys it, the audience buys it, and how could they not? Director Arne Glimcher (who made the lacklustre Mambo Kings) coerces everyone with simplistic plot manipulations. Characters are given no depth, and the actors are pawns moved about like pieces on a Cluedo gameboard. -- Dave McCoy, Amazon.com
Vinyl - Season 1 | DVD | (06/06/2016)
from £9.64

| RRP Vinyl is an exciting new drama series that explores the drug- and- sex fueled music business of the 1970s, played out through the story of a NYC record executive trying to revive his label and keep his personal life from spiraling out of control. A dizzying ride through America's music-business landscape at the dawn of punk, disco, and hip-hop, the story is seen through the eyes of Richie Finestra (Bobby Cannavale, Emmy winner for Boardwalk Empire), a major-label executive with a dark past and darker present. With his company, American Century Records, facing a number of client crises, and with his A&R team having trouble landing important new acts, Richie, newly sober after years of drug and alcohol abuse, looks to sell his label to a West German conglomerate. But the deal ends up being overshadowed by a front-page scandal involving the murder of a sleazy Long Island radio-company owner, a crime in with Richie was directly involved. Facing jail time, not to mention the loss of his disenchanted wife Devon (Olivia Wilde) and their two kids, Richie ends up reverting to his old vices, but has an epiphany during a punk-rock concert at a Greenwich Village theater where the roof caves in on him literally.
Silverado | DVD | (01/10/1999)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Director Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill) clearly set out to make an old-fashioned Western, but he couldn't help bringing a hip, self-conscious attitude to the proceedings. Silverado thus finds its own funky tone--sometimes rousing, sometimes winking. Four cowboys--Kevin Kline (a distinctly modern kind of Western hero), Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, and the rowdy young Kevin Costner--converge on a little Western burg called Silverado. Kasdan peppers the somewhat generic action with smart dialogue and a parade of quirky supporting players, including John Cleese as a sheriff who seems to have stepped straight from a Monty Python sketch into an Old West saloon. Bruce Broughton supplies the music, a real throwback to the glory days of thundering Western themes. One thing's for sure: Silverado's a lot more fun than the later Kasdan-Costner Western, Wyatt Earp. --Robert Horton, Amazon.com
