Film List: Dead Reckoning (John Cromwell, 1947) Knock On Any Door (Nicholas Ray, 1949) Tokyo Joe (Stuart Heisler, 1949) Sirocco (Curtis Bernhardt, 1951) The Family Secret (Henry Levin, 1951) The Harder They Fall (Mark Robson, 1956) A fifth foray into the film noir output of Columbia Pictures, but, this time, with a twist. Not only does this volume bring together six more gems from the studio's archives, but it also serves as a showcase for the great Humphrey Bogart. Having established his stardom in the gangster pictures of the 1930s, Bogart fit easily into the world of film noir, where he was equally at home playing troubled servicemen, slick-talking lawyers, black marketeers, gambling den owners, or hard-up journalists. Columbia Noir #5: Humphrey Bogart brings together five of the iconic actor's starring vehicles: John Cromwell's Dead Reckoning, Nicholas Ray's Knock on Any Door, Stuart Heisler's Tokyo Joe, Curtis Bernhardt's Sirocco, and Mark Robson's The Harder They Fall, plus Henry Levin's The Family Secret, a rarity starring Lee J Cobb and John Derek that was produced by Bogart's Santana Pictures, an outfit that regularly delved into the seedy, shadowy world of noir. Featuring a stunning 4K restoration of The Harder They Fall, and with Sirocco and The Family Secret appearing on Blu-ray for the first time anywhere in the world, this stunning collection includes newly recorded commentaries and critical appreciations, archival documentaries and short films, and a 120-page book. Strictly limited to 6,000 numbered units. Seas boil, heavens fall, and Demi Moore takes a candlelit bath in this effective apocalyptic chiller. The prosthetic-enhanced Moore plays a pregnant non-believer whose baby may hold the key to impending Armageddon. Logic is not exactly the strong point in this well-acted, stylish, theological grab bag, but the random collection of horrific images manages to work more often than not in this acceptable time waster for fans of The Omen and The Exorcist. Also starring Michael Biehn (The Terminator), the always-welcome John Heard in a brief cameo and the exceptional Jürgen Prochnow as a mysterious stranger who could either be from the extreme North or way, way down South. --Andrew Wright

Demonic is the first feature film from renowned genre director Neill Blomkamp since 2015's Chappie. Acclaimed director and writer Blomkamp exploded onto the film world with District 9 in 2009, which was produced by Peter Jackson and nominated for four Academy Awards⢠including Best Picture. Between those two releases came 2013's hit science fiction epic Elysium starring Matt Damon. Demonic is a supernatural possession horror which follows a young woman who unleashes a terrifying demon as she enters the mind of her comatose, serial killer mother. The much anticipated new feature stars Carly Pope (Elysium), Chris William Martin (The Vampire Diaries), Nathalie Boltt (District 9) and Michael J. Rogers (Beyond the Black Rainbow).

Jodie Foster and Dianne Wiest star in Foster's engaging directorial debut, Little Man Tate. Single mother Dede Tate is doing her best to raise her brilliant-but-lonely son Fred on a waitress' salary. Jane Grierson (Wiest), something of an expert on being brilliant but lonely, spots Fred's genius and wants to enrol him in her school for the gifted. A simple story, but very well told. Foster and Wiest both give excellent, sensitive performances, conveying the selfishness in each characters desire to have Fred to herself, as well as the pain in not being able to fulfil all his needs on her own. Adam Hann-Byrd gives a remarkable performance as Fred, showing his intelligence without getting precious about it. Foster demonstrates a steady directing hand, but the best moments are the more whimsical ones in which she reveals the quiet exhilaration of Fred's mental leaps, like when a pool game suddenly becomes a beautiful collision of lines and forces. --Ali Davis, Amazon.com
