It's not every family that's brought together by divorce, but then again, the Fisher's are anything but typical. Take Mel Fisher ( J.K Simmons, Whiplash) for example, He's chopping down trees, showing his daughter how to drive, and playing football with his son... except that Mel's blind. Then there's Joyce (Jenna Elfman, Dharma and Greg), who is your typical teenager- really into fashion, busy with school- but the problem is she's Mom. That makes it difficult for her actual teenage daughter, Katie (Ava Deluca-Verley, Southland), whose advice (and clothes) Joyce is always seeking. At the centre of all this is Henry (Eli Baker), the Fisher's 11 year old son. Having always been his dad's eye's and wingman, Henry is less than thrilled when his job is outsourced to Mel's new guide dog, Elvis. While the boy is at first reluctant to accept the changes that Elvis brings, adult Henry (voiceover by Jason Bateman, Arrested Development) realises upon reflection that his parents split finally allowed them to become one happy (divorced) family.
When Ambition Meets Faith A brutal bloody and gripping saga of obsession corruption and poisonous greed; Paul Thomas Anderson's Award Winning There Will Be Blood is a masterly unwavering inspection of a consummately evil man whose trailblazing spirit is equalled only by his murderous ambition. In the dying years of the nineteenth century Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) a struggling silver miner realises that true wealth lies in oil extraction. Driven by a passionate hatred for others and an intense psychological need to see competitors fail he heads for the oil-rich land of California in a bid to manipulate and exploit the landowners of dust-worn Little Boston in to selling him their properties. Forefront of the town is self-styled 'faith healer' Eli Sunday (Paul Dano) who is structuring his own sinister plan to funnel the residents' impending wealth into his self-founded church. As Plainview's empire expands so does his obsession with the intrinsic value of power and he becomes increasingly irascible and paranoid along the way. What follows is a vindictive ruthless and violent chain of events as Plainview fails to deliver on promises as he pits himself against the town's perturbed and unstable charismatic teenage preacher. In addition to stunning visuals and an exceptional captivating score from accomplished composer (and Radiohead guitarist) Jonny Greenwood director Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia) owes his best work to date to the incredible Academy Award winning performance as Plainview by Daniel Day-Lewis and the staggering portrayal of Eli Sunday by Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine). Bearing similarities to Citizen Kane and Giant There Will Be Blood is an intelligent thought-provoking and powerfully-eccentric epic masterpiece that is as enchanting as it is timeless.

Notorious for his laidback style J.J. Cale is probably most famous for his influence on song-writing. Not only did he pen After Midnight and Cocaine (both hits for Eric Clapton) but he also wrote Call Me The Breeze which was to be a massive hit for Lynyrd Skynyrd. His influence extended beyond his song-writing abilities: his unique sense of rhythm and shuffling boogie had a major impact on artists such as Clapton and Knopfler. In 1959 screenwriter Rod Serling first opened the door to the "dimension of imagination" that is The Twilight Zone, a show quite unlike anything that had gone before, and better than much that has followed in its wake. This original and daring television series ran for a magnificent five seasons from 1959 to 1964 and still looks as fresh as ever, particularly on DVD. What distinguished the series (and still does) is the quality of the scripts, many of which were penned by Serling, but with significant contributions from veteran sci-fi authors and screenwriters such as Richard Matheson. Actors of the calibre of Robert Redford, Burgess Meredith, Lee Marvin and William Shatner gave some of their best small-screen performances, while an unforgettable main title theme by Bernard Herrmann and musical contributions from young turks such as Jerry Goldsmith underlined the show's attraction for great creative talent both behind and in front of the cameras. On the DVD: A neat animated menu with a winking eye guides the viewer "Inside the Twilight Zone", which consists of digests of background information on the individual episodes, as well as a general history of the show, a season-by-season breakdown and a potted biography of Serling. --Mark Walker

Dead Sexy is yet another entry in the spurious "erotic thriller" genre. Although it attempts to pass itself off as a crime drama, the credibility of the whole affair is stretched somewhat by casting ex-Playboy Playmate Shannon Tweed in the lead role of Detective Kate McBain, the police officer leading investigations into a suspected serial killer. This time, though, Tweed (who also produced the film) does a sterling job of both keeping her clothes on (most of the time) and acting her way through the movie. Every cliché in the book is utilised, but the movie might have stood up to repeated viewing if it took itself a little less seriously. As it is, the frequent sex scenes are crow-barred in to signal some sort of plot development as the whole thing moves towards its rather lame conclusion, unable to decide whether it wants to offer explicit adult entertainment or serious drama. Ultimately this is one for fans of Tweed, not those who relish a good whodunit. On the DVD: Dead Sexy is surprisingly high-budget and offers good picture and sound quality. Extras are limited to a filmography of Tweed and her wooden co-star John Enos, plus a theatrical trailer that does a fair job of summing up the movie's mix of sex and action. --Phil Udell
