| RRP The Outlaw is a fascinating Western with a determindly off-beat story about Doc Holliday Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid coming to conflict over Holliday's stolen horse and the voluptuous halfbreed played by Jane Russell. The script is often disarmingly tongue in cheek and there is a weird eroticism to the film.

Carry On England | DVD | (27/08/2001)
from £13.95
| Saving you £-3.96 (N/A%)
| RRP By way of an experiment, a mixed-sex anti-aircraft battery is set up during World War II. The result is Carry On England, and the sex is indeed pretty mixed, although the drafting in of Patrick Mower and Judy Geeson rather demonstrates the need for at least some of the cast to be attractive in order to make this premise feasible. For the most part, of course, it's tits-out sex-comedy slapstick all the way, but there's a nicely ambivalent performance from Kenneth Connor, who portrays the wartime British officer class as being pretty much bonkers, a telling interpretation which Stephen Fry was to perfect years later in Blackadder Goes Forth. The location is of course typically Carry On cheap-and-cheerful, but its inevitable drabness, together with the indistinguishable khaki uniforms, tends to put a bit of a damper on the adult-panto atmosphere which the best Carry Ons deliver. The cast commendably manage to transcend this, though, so there's still plenty of fun to be had. On the DVD: The feature is presented in 1.77:1 aspect ratio, but the disc has no added features. --Roger Thomas
Crossworlds | DVD | (07/06/2004)
from £8.63
| Saving you £-2.64 (N/A%)
| RRP Star Wars meets A Wrinkle in Time in this adventure of an intergalactic war where one unassuming young man holds the key to dimensional travel and the legacy of his mysterious adventurer father. Boyish Josh Charles is the lucky Luke Skywalker stand-in, a good-natured underachiever shocked out of his lovelorn moping when gorgeous guerrilla fighter Andrea Roth takes the battle to his bedroom. Rutger Hauer is the coffee-chugging freedom fighter who is roused from retirement to fill out the trio and face dimensional mob boss Stuart Wilson. This obviously low budget picture makes the most of limited special effects and striking settings--notably an elevator ride that turns into a free-floating mind game hanging in space and a knock-down, drag-out finale that sends our hapless hero popping up all over the universe. Hauer makes for a surprisingly charismatic mercenary turned father figure and Charles is modestly charming, once he loses the smart-ass wisecracks. Though it reaches for a scope that's beyond its means, Crossworlds is an entertaining bit of sci-fi fluff. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com

The Eiger Sanction | DVD | (14/04/2003)
from £5.48
| Saving you £4.51 (82.30%)
| RRP Clint Eastwood held the dual role of director and star of this 1975 spy thriller, which makes up for sluggish pacing with a breathtaking climax on a treacherous peak in the Swiss Alps. The plot kicks into gear when Eastwood, playing a retired assassin, is recruited back into a secret organisation to avenge the murder of an old friend. He's then blackmailed into making a second "hit"; this time his target is one of three men who will be attempting to conquer the Eiger, a dangerous peak in Switzerland. An accomplished climber, Eastwood's character joins the expedition with George Kennedy as leader of the ground crew. Shifting loyalties, apparent betrayals, and paranoid suspicion factor into the suspenseful climax on the sheer face of the mountain. This memorable sequence--for which Eastwood performed his own mountain-climbing stunts--is effectively intense, built on a standard plot of double-cross and intrigue that was intended to combine Eastwood's screen persona with the global adventure of the James Bond films. For the most part it works--it's not one of Eastwood's better films, but it's got some first-class thrills (and a sly performance by Jack Cassidy) to grab and hold your interest. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
