| RRP Made For Each Other: Oscar winner James Stewart earns himself ""a place among the screen's most notable actors"" (Hollywood Spectator) and Carole Lombard delivers ""The best performance of her career"" (Newsweek) in this humor-laced marital drama that's as ""refreshing as a breath of spring"" (Motion Picture Herald). Attorney John Mason (Stewart) marries Jane (Lombard) after a blissful one-day courtship. Life is wonderful...until they are overwhelmed by the demands of John's hard-hearted boss a meddlesome mother-in-law and the birth of a baby. Just when the marriage is at the breaking point a crisis turns their world upside down. Will their newfound love falter...or are the young newlyweds truly made for each other? Pot O' Gold:Based on a popular radio money giveaway show of the same name Pot O' Gold was James Roosevelt's first (and last) attempt at movie producing. Probably because his father was then president of the United States Mr. Roosevelt was able to hire Hollywood's best talent: the ever-bewildered but lovable James Stewart who had won an Oscar for The Philadelphia Story the year before; the beautiful and tempestuous Paulette Goddard who had just starred with Charlie Chaplin in The Great Dictator and because 1941 was the peak of the big band era popular Horace Heidt and his Thirty Musical Knights. The story revolves around the band's struggle for its ""big break"". The members all live in Mrs. McCorkle's boarding house and spend their time practicing on the roof which maddens Charles Winninger the wealthy owner of the neighboring health food factory. Everyone else in he neighborhood seems to love it. Mrs. McCorkle's daughter Molly (Goddard) sings with the band and has the utmost confidence it will succeed. Jimmy Haskell (Stewart) arrives in town and immediately meets Molly and the band. He's a former music store owner who has come at the request of his music-hating uncle who advertises his products on a radio show ""The Haskell Happy Hour"" - music-less until he goes on vacation and Jimmy Molly and the band take over!

| RRP If youre looking for signs that the modern-day Disney has lost neither its touch nor its savvy nature, then theres evidence in abundance in the smart modern-day fairy tale Enchanted. Bookended by the kind of old-style animation the studio is rightly famed for, the main, live action segment of the film finds Amy Adams Giselle--an archetypal Disney princess in pretty much every sense--dropped slap bang into the middle of modern day New York. What follows is ingenious fun, as Giselle walks round very much as a fish out of water, followed quickly by James Marsdens prince who attempts to come to the rescue. Thing is, modern day New York and old style princesses dont really mix, and Enchanted studiously mines the comedy of the scenario, thanks to a smart and witty script. What also lifts Enchanted though are the delightful tips of the hat to classics of Disney old. And were not just talking the show-stopping numbers: there are references to the likes of Beauty and the Beast, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty to be found here, and a star-making performance from Adams powering the whole film forward. One of the very best family movies of 2007, Enchanted does occasionally stumble through the odd twee moment (and it could really use a villain with more screen time than Susan Sarandons wicked stepmother gets), but that cant hide the fact that its terrific fun, lavishly made and, at its best, quite brilliant. A modern day family classic, and great to see Disney once again delivering the kind of entertainment it excels at. --Simon Brew

The Twilight Zone - Vol. 7 | DVD | (25/08/2000)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP In 1959 screenwriter Rod Serling first opened the door to the "dimension of imagination" that is The Twilight Zone, a show quite unlike anything that had gone before, and better than much that has followed in its wake. This original and daring television series ran for a magnificent five seasons from 1959 to 1964 and still looks as fresh as ever, particularly on DVD. What distinguished the series (and still does) is the quality of the scripts, many of which were penned by Serling, but with significant contributions from veteran sci-fi authors and screenwriters such as Richard Matheson. Actors of the calibre of Robert Redford, Burgess Meredith, Lee Marvin and William Shatner gave some of their best small-screen performances, while an unforgettable main title theme by Bernard Herrmann and musical contributions from young turks such as Jerry Goldsmith underlined the show's attraction for great creative talent both behind and in front of the cameras. On the DVD: A neat animated menu with a winking eye guides the viewer "Inside the Twilight Zone", which consists of digests of background information on the individual episodes, as well as a general history of the show, a season-by-season breakdown and a potted biography of Serling. --Mark Walker

| RRP Double Feature Disaster in the Atlantic On April 14 1912 the greatest ship of the time and man's monument to the technological achievement the Royal Mail Steamer Titanic would sail into the lexicon of history. At 11:46 p.m. aboard ship the lookout signaled to the bridge and reported an iceberg right ahead. Within moments the Titanic struck ice and foundered in just over 2 hours. 2 223 souls were aboard. Only 706 would survive. Countless lives would be forever changed by the disaster. Indeed the trajedy touched the hearts of people around the world. No other historical event would inspire as many literary and cinematic treatments on the subject. This historical presentation was produced in 1929 and is the first feature sound film of the disaster. The Titanic Chronicles The Titanic Chronicles was an attempt to understand what happened to the Titanic the American government held a series of hearings to investigate the disaster. These hearings were filled with eyewitness accounts that detailed every minute of that terrifying night and they represented several different points of view. The U.S. Senate hearings were opened to the public and they were held in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. The hearings were chaired by Senator William Alden Smith of Michigan. Senator Smith's mission was simple: find out what had gone wrong and to discover the truth. This program is a reenactment of the most striking and revealing moments from the actual hearings. The testimony you will hear comes the closest to the truth as to why the R.M.S. Titanic now lies on the bottom of the North Atlantic.
