  • Maurice (the Merchant Ivory Collection)Maurice (the Merchant Ivory Collection) | DVD | (06/09/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

The second of the Merchant/Ivory films (A Room with a View, Howard's End), Maurice deals with a theme few period pieces dare mention--a young man's struggle with his homosexuality. It's not just a gay coming-of-age story, however. The hero wrestles with British class society as much as his personal and sexual identity. The film opens on a stormy, windswept beach, as an older man awkwardly instructs young, fatherless Maurice Hall (James Wilby) in the "sacred mysteries" of sex. The same turbulent, wordless struggle with passion lasts throughout this slowly evolving, beautifully filmed story. Novelist E M Forster's brainy, British melodrama hinges on choice and compulsion, as the pensive hero falls for two completely different men. First comes frail, suppressed Clive (Hugh Grant), who wants nothing more than classical Platonic harmony ... and a straight lifestyle. (Grant's performance is so convincing, one wonders how he ever became a heterosexual sex symbol.) After Clive's wedding, Maurice turns to hypnosis to cure his unspeakable longings. Unfortunately, his "cure" is interrupted by Clive's lustful, brooding, barely literate gamekeeper Scudder (Rupert Graves), a worker more at home gutting rabbits than discussing the classics. Maurice's love for a "social inferior" forces him to confront his illicit desire and his ingrained class snobbery. --Grant Balfour

  • The Vicar Of Dibley - The Best Of The Vicar Of Dibley [1994]The Vicar Of Dibley - The Best Of The Vicar Of Dibley | DVD | (25/11/2002) from £7.05   |  Saving you £11.93 (293.84%)   |  RRP £15.99

If you're expecting a selection of your favourite episodes from The Vicar of Dibley, then you'll be in for a bit of a surprise. For what we have here instead is Dawn French in conversation with John Plowman, the show's producer. Together, they introduce and analyse the characters and relive key moments from the series, neatly categorised under such headings as "Chocolate", "The Nearly Wedding" and "Celebrity Appearances" (don't forget they enticed both Kylie and Darcey Bussell onto the show, as well as a host of other celebs). So, it's very much a selection for diehard fans who want to be reminded of the highlights (and there are plenty), ranging from Alice's Teletubby bridesmaids to the arrival of Geraldine's mega-freezer, packed to bursting with Haagen-Dazs. To watch this 90-minute film is to be reminded of just how brilliant--and topical--the concept was. The writing is as fresh as ever, as are the priceless group of characters who bring the scripts to life. From the very opening moments, when Geraldine turns up and jokes that they were expecting a man "beard, bible, bad breath; instead you got a babe with a bob cut and a magnificent bosom", you know you're in the presence of an enduring comic creation. On the DVD: The Best of the Vicar of Dibley offers pretty minimal extras--an entertaining feature on real-life women vicars, laconically but pertinently narrated by Jo Brand. --Harriet Smith

Welcome back to Westworld, the Emmy®-winning drama series where the puppet show is over and the newly liberated hosts are coming for humankind. Created for television by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the first season of WESTWORLD explored a world in which every human appetite, not matter how noble or depraved, could be indulged. Delving into what it means to be human through the eyes of the lifelike AI hosts in the park, the series investigated the boundaries of an exotic world set at the intersection of the near future and the reimagined past. Meticulously crafted and artfully designed, Westworld offered its guests an unparalleled, immersive world where they have the freedom to become who they've always wanted to be or who they never knew they were. In the first season, the hosts didn't understand the nature of their reality. They didn't have an element of choice. All that changes with the pull of a trigger. In Season Two, chaos takes control as the rancher's daughter, Dolores Abernathy (series star EVAN RACHEL WOOD) takes charge, Maeve Millay (series star THANDIE NEWTON) is on a mission and the mysterious Man in Black (series star ED HARRIS) is back. A dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness, the birth of a new form of life on Earth, and the evolution of sin, the series also stars JEFFREY WRIGHT, JAMES MARSDEN, TESSA THOMPSON, LUKE HEMSWORTH, RODRIGO SANTORO and more.

My Name Is JoeKen Loach's My Name Is Joe is a slice of life so raw that you can see the blood dripping off it and as in real life it mixes humour passion tragedy and violence in equal measure. Joe (Peter Mullan) is a recovering alcoholic and has done a few things in his past which he'd rather forget. Raining Stones is a funny and essentially human story of survival in the nineties and people's aspirations for a better way of life. Riff RaffStevie a young Glaswegian just out of Barlinnie prison comes down to London and gets a job on a building site - a melting pot of itinerant laborers from all over the country. Stevie has other problems to contend: the wages are low the site teems with rats he has nowhere to sleep and life in London isn't that easy. One day on his way to work Stevie finds a handbag in a skip. He takes it back to it owner and meets Susan.
