  • Bear In The Big Blue House - Sleepytime With Bear [1997]Bear In The Big Blue House - Sleepytime With Bear | DVD | (06/01/2003) from £19.99   |  Saving you £-7.00 (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

One of the most endearing aspects of Bear in the Big Blue House is everyone's habit of talking directly to the camera. This has been a part of Muppet practice for years, but when Bear is politely explaining the importance of brushing your teeth before bedtime, it makes children pay attention far more readily. Especially when everyone then breaks into song! That of course is the other delight about the show, when little bear Ojo, Tutter mouse, Pip and Pop, Treela the Lemur and Luna the Moon all join in one of the cute and catchy numbers. The songs featured across the three episodes here ("The Big Sleep", "And to All a Good Night" and "Friends for Life", all from the show's first two series) focus on the rituals of bedtime. The idea is that these each make an ideal comforter to send a child to bed happily. If this is your goal, the second episode--about getting to stay up late--may not be the best choice. On the DVD: Bear in the Big Blue House: Sleepytime with Bear gives karaoke treatment to six of the best songs, including the all-time classic "Brush Brush Bree". That's it apart from a few trailers. You do also get a couple of pages for colouring in attached to the booklet insert. The shows are presented in their original stereo sound and TV 4:3 ratio. --Paul Tonks

  • Friends - Series 6 - Episodes 17-24 [1995]Friends - Series 6 - Episodes 17-24 | DVD | (06/11/2000) from £8.67   |  Saving you £-1.68 (-24.00%)   |  RRP £6.99

Season 6: Between seasons, Cox and David Arquette were married, leading to "T.O.W. After Vegas" adding "Arquette" after everyone's title credits. Unfortunately, on-screen it's divorce time again despite "T.O.W. Ross Hugs Rachel", since he secretly tries avoiding an annulment of their accidental marriage. Far more out in the open is Chandler and Monica's relationship. Moving in together creates lots of fun as the others move back and forth into each other's apartments. It also leads to Joey finally showing a tender side toward temporary roommate Janine (Elle Macpherson). By now his chat-up catchphrase: "How you doin'?" had caught on, but he needed to fall for someone. He kept the fun alive all year pretending to have a Porsche, starting work on the show Mac and C.H.E.E.S.E. and by falling for Chandler's card game Cups in the excellent "T.O.W. On the Last Night" (one of many directed by Schwimmer). More fun came from Ross trying to teach everyone the mental discipline Unagi, popping ridiculous moves with Monica for their childhood dance routine and having a fluorescently dazzling smile in "T.O.W. Ross' Teeth" (also featuring a near-silent cameo from Ralph Lauren). Far more talkative was Reese Witherspoon as Rachel's sister--another temptation for Ross. What they briefly had wasn't as complicated as later in "T.O.W. Ross Meets Elizabeth's Dad", who turns out to be an Emmy-winning Bruce Willis (thanks to becoming friends with Perry during The Whole Nine Yards). The fans' need for love interest and continuity had established the seasons' format now. Another two-part finale offers jeopardy--then resolution--from Tom Selleck's Richard in "T.O.W. The Proposal" between Chandler and Monica. --Paul Tonks

Spirit - Stallion Of The Cimarron (Dir. Kelly Asbury / Lorna Cook 2002): A refreshingly old-fashioned and gentle tale of a mustang stallion struggling to remain free in the old West. The film is a seamless blend of traditional hand-drawn and computer-generated animation. Opening with an impressive bird's eye pan of the Grand Canyon from the viewpoint of an eagle SPIRIT captures the unspoiled beauty of the land. The animals in this particular animated film do not talk and Matt Damon provides effective sparse narration from the perspective of Spirit an adventurous young stallion who is captured by the U.S. Army. But Spirit will not let the soldiers saddle and ride him. An authoritarian colonel (voiced by James Cromwell) is determined to break Spirit at one point starving the horse to weaken him. A Lakota prisoner Little Creek (voiced by Daniel Studi) is impressed with the horse and helps him to escape. Little Creek can't break the horse either. But the two learn to respect each other and Spirit meets Rain Little Creek's horse and falls in love. The Road To El Dorado (Dir. Bibo Bergeron 1999): Get ready for an exhilarating ride of a lifetime! Season 4: The New Year begins by telling the fans in no uncertain terms that it's over for Ross and Rachel. There are a few episodes of pure silliness--such as "T.O.W. Chandler in a Box" after he kisses Joey's girlfriend--then two distinct story arcs take over. Usually when an actress falls pregnant, a show will hide them behind objects or in bigger clothes. For Kudrow it was decided to celebrate the fact on-screen by having her carry a child for her brother Frank (Giovanni Ribsi) and his wife. Being Phoebe, it naturally gets weird when "T.O.W. The Embryos" reveals she'll be having triplets. The hilarity resulted in an Emmy for her hard work. Subplot number two came with the arrival of British babe Emily (Helen Baxendale), who rapidly steals Ross's heart. The same episode ("T.O.W. Joey's Dirty Day") also features an amazing cameo from Charlton Heston giving Joey acting tips. But this couldn't have prepared fans for the stars and shocks of the gang's trip to London in the two-part finale "T.O.W Ross' Wedding". Somehow squeezed into the budget were: Richard Branson, Tom Conti, Sarah Ferguson, Hugh Laurie, Jennifer Saunders and June Whitfield. At the climax of what should have been the perfect wedding, the year ends by telling the fans in no uncertain terms that it'll never be over for Ross and Rachel. --Paul Tonks

  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Series 4 (Standard plastic case packaging) [1998]Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Series 4 (Standard plastic case packaging) | DVD | (01/06/2004) from £14.99   |  Saving you £20.00 (133.42%)   |  RRP £34.99

In its fourth series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer had to change its formula radically. Two major characters--the vampire-with-a-soul Angel and Cordelia, the queen bitch of Sunnydale High--had gone off to be in their own show, Angel, and soon after the start of the year Willow's werewolf boyfriend Oz left when Seth Green needed to concentrate on his film career. Buffy and Willow started college, where they met new characters such as Riley, the All-American Boy with a double life, and Tara, the sweet stuttering witch; but Xander and Giles found themselves at something of a loose end. Several characters were subjected to the radical re-envisioning possible in a show that deals with the supernatural: the blond vampire Spike came back and soon found himself with an inhibitor chip in his head, forced into reluctant alliance with Buffy; the former vengeance demon Anya became passionately smitten with Xander. Not all fans were happy with the central story arc about the sinister Dr Walsh (Lindsay Crouse) and her Frankensteinian creation Adam, though Crouse's performance was memorable. The strength of Series 4 was perhaps most in impressive stand-alone episodes such as the silent "Hush", the multiple dream sequence "Restless" and the passionate, moving "New Moon Rising", in which Oz returns, apparently cured, only to find that Willow is no longer waiting for him. This was one of the high points of the show as a vehicle for intense acting, perhaps only equalled by "Who Are You?", in which the evil slayer Faith takes over Buffy's body and Sarah Michelle Gellar gets to play the bad girl for once. --Roz Kaveney

Director Renny Harlin (Cutthroat Island) took the reins of this 1990 sequel, which places Bruce Willis's New York City cop character in harm's way again with a gaggle of terrorists. This time, Willis awaits his wife's arrival at Dulles Airport in Washington, DC, when he gets wind of a plot to blow up the facility. Noisy, overbearing and forgettable, the film has none of the purity of its predecessor's simple story; and it makes a huge miscalculation in allowing a terrible tragedy to occur rather than stretch out the tension. Where Die Hard set new precedents in action movies, Die Hard 2 is just an anything-goes spectacle. -- Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

Twelve-year-old twins Ai and Yu Hayakawa take a mysterious subway to Wonderland to look for their missing scientist-parents. Wonderland is a hostile place, ruled by the petulant Earl Tyrant and his assorted hench-creatures. Ai and Yu are attacked by monsters and saved first by Lisa, a practitioner of the "Kigen Arts," then repeatedly by the taciturn, gun-totting Kaze. The first episodes are cluttered with characters who appear briefly then vanish. Although Ai, Yu, and Lisa do a lot of traveling, the series doesn't really go anywhere: the filmmakers seem more interested in showcasing the elaborate CG effects at their disposal than in coherent storytelling. The effects are very flashy, but they never meld satisfactorily with the drawn animation. Based on the popular videogame franchise, Unlimited borrows from Matsumoto's Galaxy Express and Miyazawa's Galactic Railroad, but offers none of their mystery and magic.
