  Unless you've had your head in a plate of pie and mash for the last few years you'll know that The Naked Chef is the UK's youngest culinary talent, Jamie Oliver, and that the "naked" refers to his style of cooking--fresh, simple, stripped back to basics--not his dress sense. The tone is set for the series from the very first episode with roast leg of lamb flavoured with garlic, rosemary, and pancetta and baked fresh fruits (figs, peaches, cherries) with mascarpone and vanilla sugar. It's all ever so slightly and deliciously left of a very classic centre. His basic recipe for homemade pasta is so undauntingly straightforward, it almost certainly did for pasta-makers what Delia did for coriander when she first used it. If his young nieces can handle ravioli with broad bean, mint and fresh ricotta or his mouth-watering variation with potato, watercress and orgonzola, then we all can. Equally simple but inspiring are his fish dishes: baked salmon fillets with French beans, roasted cherry tomatoes, olives, anchovies and a basil aioli; whole steamed sea bass slashed and stuffed with fresh herbs, red peppers and onions; or his Asian-inspired herb-infused broth over steamed king prawns, scallops and clams with sliced ginger root, garlic and chilies. It remains to be seen whether Jamie Oliver turns out to be the Delia Smith for the lad and ladette generation, but British supermarkets seem infinitely better since he's had his way with purple basil, fennel and baby new potatoes on national television. --Tricia Tuttle

With this ubiquity one could be forgiven for forgetting exactly why the nation fell gobsmackingly in love with him in the first place. One look at this video should remind you just why your Nan and Mum were swooning, and why he's everyone's favourite cheeky chappy. Recipes such as Thai Seared Carpaccio, Tray Baked Pork Chops with Thyme and Roasted Pears, Preserved Slow-cooked Baby Bell Chillies Stuffed with Anchovies and Capers, may sound difficult, but he has a knack for making all of these seem manageable for even the most reticent cook. Following on from the first series of the show, tedious measuring and weighing take a back seat to tasting and trusting your instincts. You'll be whacking out the ole' Slashed Fillet of Sea Bass Baked with Wild Mushrooms and Potatoes in no time. It's a cooking style that encourages pleasure in making tasty food for good friends. As he says "it's just about gettin' your mates around and gettin' the boys and girls fed". Simple.   At first, Best Laid Plans comes off like yet another all-flash-no-substance crime thriller but it's one of those rare films that end better than they start. Nick (Alessandro Nivola from Face/Off), broke and desperate to get out of his suffocating small town, agrees to take part in a drug heist. When his partners get caught, he has less than a week to come up with $15,000 or suffer the consequences. When his college buddy Brice (Josh Brolin--Flirting with Disaster) comes back to town, Nick and his girlfriend Lissa (Reese Witherspoon) hatch a plan to blackmail Brice out of a rare collectable. Of course, things go wrong--which is where things get entertaining. The plot could use a few more twists to really crackle but the surprises it does have work and the ending is both clever and affecting. Along the way, the best scene features a drug dealer who quotes economic theory from the bible of capitalism, The Wealth of Nations. In the past few years, Reese Witherspoon has turned in superb performances in such varied movies as Freeway, Pleasantville and especially Election; Best Laid Plans doesn't make much use of her talent but she's always watchable. --Bret Fetzer
