  Originally a stage play, The Beast is a war story full of powerful symbolism. Its simple premise is that a lost Russian tank is hunted by a band of Mujahedeen guerrillas, and neither side will give up. It's the second year of the Russian invasion of Afghanistan (1981). Taj (Steven Bauer) is eager to prove himself in life, while tank commander Daskal (George Dzundza) feels he has nothing left to prove. As explained by a chanced-upon Holy Man, Taj (the rebel's Khan) is David, while the tank is symbolically Goliath or The Beast. The one person in the middle of all this is the gunner Koverchenko (Jason Patric) who experiences more than just a crisis of faith. With the tank lost in the Valley of the Jackal and pursued by a wild pack, it soon becomes hard to tell the three protagonists apart. Bloody and shocking, this is a tautly directed film by Kevin Reynolds (who went on to Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Waterworld) once you get over the Russians having American accents On the DVD: the 1.85:1 presentation beautifully shows off the wide-angle photography of never endingly blue skies. A three-channel surround is good enough to pick up the echoing canyon walls. The extras are half-hearted, however, with just filmographies and, almost as an afterthought, trailers for two other movies. --Paul Tonks

Separated from their patrol the crew of a Russian T-62 tank engages in a deadly game of cat and mouse with the local insurgents led by Taj (Steven Bauer). The tyrannical tank commander Daskal (George Dzundza) wreaks havoc on a peaceful Afghani village pushing the moral boundaries of the tank driver Koverchenko (Jason Patric) to the limits. Sensing mutiny the psychotic Daskal abandons the disenchanted tanker to die in the desert at the hand of rebels only to find he's sealed his own fate. A Soldiers Story: Tensions flare in this gripping film about a murder on a black army base near the end of World War II. Captain Davenport (Howard E. Rollins Jr.) a proud black army attorney is sent to Fort Neal Louisiana to investigate the ruthless shooting death of Sergeant Waters (Adolph Caesar). Through interviews with Waters' men Davenport learns that he was a vicious man who served the white world and despised his own roots. Was the killer a bigoted white officer? Or could he have been a black soldier embittered by Waters' constant race baiting? Directed by Norman Jewison from Charles Fuller's Pulitzer Prize-winning play A Soldier's Story is both a spellbinding mystery and a superb drama that transcends race.

  An entry in the recent rash of crooks-falling-out cynical crime-comedy noirs, Four Dogs Playing Poker opens with a robbery at a wedding in Buenos Aires. Five friends pose as staff and guests to penetrate the secret collector's vault of lecherous father-of-the-bride George Lazenby and walk away with a valuable dancing-girl statue. Back in Los Angeles, the team are visited by their sponsor, hefty guest-star crook Forrest Whitaker, who tells them there's a question as to whether the statue is on the ship that's supposed to be smuggling it into the country. If it doesn't show up they'll have to cough up a million dollars between them or get killed. To underline the point and in the first of many "it-just-doesn't-make-sense" plot turns, Whitaker has his men shoot Tim Curry, organiser of the gang, in the leg and then, to show that trying to leave town is a bad idea, has him hung up dead in a meat locker with his feet chain sawed off (offscreen) by the comedy British double-act thugs. An unbelievably complicated scheme is hatched between the surviving four, two couples, whereby they each take out insurance policies that benefit the rest and pick cards and safety-deposit box-keys that identify one of them as the designated murderer and another as a victim. Naturally, suspicions simmer (one character, when asked if she distrusts her friends, replies "all my friends are thieves") and triple-crosses are hatched. The prolific Olivia Williams, in Lulu wig and American accent, emerges as the star, walking a knife-edge between imperilled heroine and cynical manipulator but she is ably supported by druggie, computer savvy Daniel London, hunky bartender Balthazar Getty and jittery insurance functionary Stacy Edwards. Familiar, if watchable. --Kim Newman

Tex the Sherrif and the Priest all want something done with the hand and the unpredictable outcome proves to be both magical and hilarious! Combat Academy A wise-cracking hipster and a nerd are sent to a military academy to be straightened out. But the two manage to turn the academy inside out with their comic capers and war games! Better Living Nora (Olympia Dukakis) and her three grown daughters living in the suburbs of New York City are stunned when Tom (Roy Scheider) Nora's husband and the father of the girls comes back after 15 years and reunites their family. But he has changed. He insists that the family build a shelter underneath their house in which to live. 'Better Living' is an intrigueing psychological family portrait that is at once funny and frightening.
