In 1990, Death Warrant was one of several back-to-back action movies that suddenly made Jean Claude Van Damme's name a rival to Stallone's and Schwarzenegger's. Its distinction from the likes of Cyborg or Double Impact is in its firm grounding in reality. In fact, Los Angeles County Jail couldn't seem more harshly real. That's where Detective Burke finds himself going undercover to investigate a string of mysterious (and politically embarrassing) deaths. Of course, the prison environment is ideally suited to Van Damme's strengths, where he elicits sympathy as the innocent abroad during one fight sequence after another. Lots of colourful secondary characters are along for the ride, such as the enigmatic Priest, tough-as-nails peanut-shucking Sergeant DeGraf and Burke's arch nemesis, the Candyman (Patrick Kilpatrick). There's an admirable attempt at portraying the action with some panache. Light and shadow is used to good effect and every kickbox move is punctuated by a double cut. Although the script dispenses with the essential Van Damme elements in the opening seconds (he lost a partner / he's from Canada / he can kickbox), this is definitely an above-average Van Damme flick. On the DVD: The bare-bones transfer offers an occasionally grainy picture in 1.85:1 ratio and a three-channel surround soundtrack. The only extra off the static menu is the original theatrical trailer. --Paul Tonks

François Truffaut again tackles the elusive nature of creativity and creation in his thoughtful, sumptuous 1980 film The Last Metro. Nominated for the Best Foreign Language film Oscar, and a winner of various Césars, The Last Metro is set in occupied France during World War II. Marion Steiner (Catherine Deneuve) manages the Theatre Montmarte in the stead of her Jewish husband, director Lucas Steiner (Heinz Bennent). He has purportedly fled France but is really hiding in the basement of the theatre. The one hope to save the Montmarte is a new play starring the dashing Bernard Granger (Gérard Depardieu). The attraction between Marion and Bernard is palpable, and as usual Truffaut creates tension and drama from even the most casual of occurrences. The theme of the director locked away while his lover and his creation are appropriated by others makes for interesting Truffaut study, but first and foremost this is a well-spun romance.--Keith Simanton, Amazon.com

Claude Lelouche (A Man And A Woman) continues to examine the more surreal and often dream-like aspects of love in his latest film And Now Ladies And Gentlemen. Starring Jeremy Irons as a jewel thief who falls in love with a jazz singer after arriving in Morocco in an attempt to evade the police the story blurs reality and fantasy and is set against the exotic and mysterious backdrop of North Africa. The dream-like quality of the film lends an engaging and sensuous atmosphere and Ir
Stolen Kisses reunites François Truffaut and Jean-Pierre Léaud to catch up with Truffaut's cinematic alter ego, Antoine Doinel, the troubled adolescent of The 400 Blows. Stolen Kisses opens with the now-grown Doinel sprung from military prison with a dishonourable discharge, drawn directly from Truffaut's own history of delinquency, but the parallels end there. Lovesick Doinel woos the perky but unresponsive object of his affections, Christine (Claude Jade) while he engages in a series of professions--hotel night-watchman, private investigator, TV repairman--with mixed success and comic entanglements. But when he falls in love with the elegant wife of his client (Delphine Seyrig at her most beautiful and charming), Christine realises she misses Antoine's persistence and clumsy passes, so she embarks on a seductive plan of her own. Truffaut's comic confection is full of deadpan gags and screwball chaos, a world away from the heavy seriousness of The 400 Blows, and Léaud is endearingly naive as the determined Doinel, forging ahead with more pluck and passion than aptitude. It may be Truffaut's most sweetly romantic film, a knowing man's embrace of eager innocence and storybook sentiment. Doinel returned two years later in Bed and Board. --Sean Axmaker

A fascinating compilation of some of the more exciting highlights of the 1987 Monte Carlo Rally! Spectacular scenery provided the backdrop for the opening round of the 1988 World Rally Championship the Monte-Carlo Rally. However the historic special stages were without their traditional snow setting up a finely balanced and ultra-fast battle over more than 630 competitive kilometres of dry asphalt. The event would prove to be a real car-breaker eliminating almost half the field during 26 stages. The scene was set for a showdown between the Martini Lancia team that had dominated 1987 and the rejuvenated Mazda team wanting to forget a disappointing season. While the works Lancia Delta HF 4WDs of Bruno Saby and Miki Biasion led the way the Mazda 323s of Timo Salonen Hannu Mikkola and Ingvar Carlsson were in trouble - diesel-contaminated fuel ruining their effort. When Biasion retired the Lancias of Group N Champion Alessandro Fiorio and Yves Loubet joined the battle for victory. Loubet's luck ran out with the end in sight his Lancia crashing into retirement. Behind Saby and the Jolly Club-backed Delta of Fiorio Jean-Pierre Ballet's Peugeot 205 GTi took unexpected third. Incredibly former World Champion Salonen recovered from 42nd to take fifth just behind the battle-scarred Renault 11 Turbo of Alain Oreille.
