Truman Capote's best seller, a breakthrough narrative account of real-life crime and punishment, became an equally chilling film in the hands of writer-director RICHARD BROOKS (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof). Cast for their unsettling resemblances to the killers they play, ROBERT BLAKE (Lost Highway) and SCOTT WILSON (The Great Gatsby) give authentic, unshowy performances as Perry Smith and Richard Hickock, who in 1959 murdered a family of four in Kansas during a botched robbery. Brooks brings a detached, documentary-like starkness to this uncompromising view of an American tragedy and its aftermath; at the same time, stylistically In Cold Blood is a filmmaking master class, with clinically precise editing, chiaroscuro black-and-white cinematography by the great CONRAD L. • Thunderbolt And Lightfoot [1974]Thunderbolt And Lightfoot | DVD | (21/07/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

Jeff Bridges actually corralled an Oscar nomination for his spirited, oddball performance in the genre-crime story Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, directed by first-timer Michael Cimino who (a short two films later) would bring down a studio with Heaven's Gate. Clint Eastwood plays a bank robber par excellence with a flair for explosives who is being hunted by his former partners, who think he has their loot from their last job. Bridges is his eager apprentice and sidekick, who helps him escape; when Eastwood finally makes peace with his hunters, Bridges convinces them to try a daring robbery--but things inevitably go awry. The relationship between Eastwood and Bridges is both funny and touching in this, one of Eastwood's better post-Dirty Harry efforts. --Marshall Fine

  • The Gauntlet [1977]The Gauntlet | DVD | (23/08/1999) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £13.99

Clint Eastwood is a down-and-out cop who is sent on a routine mission to pick up a witness and deliver her to the Phoenix courthouse. Sounds easy until he realises he's been set up by the man who gave him this simple assignment. The interplay between Eastwood and the witness, a clever prostitute played by the actor's former girlfriend, Sondra Locke, is tough and playful. They obviously had strong chemistry. The story is highly implausible at times, but the action sequences are satisfying. Eastwood directs The Gauntlet very much in the style of his Academy Award-winning Western Unforgiven. Although the body count is surprisingly low for an Eastwood action film, a house, several cars and a large bus get shot through with more holes than a big wheel of Swiss cheese. For Eastwood fans, this is the laconic hero at his prime. --Richard Natale

  • Little Big Man [1970]Little Big Man | DVD | (07/06/2004) from £12.24   |  Saving you £3.75 (30.64%)   |  RRP £15.99

In Arthur Penn's adaptation of Thomas Berger's novel Little Big Man, Dustin Hoffman stars as Jack Crabb, the only white survivor of the Battle of Little Big Horn. Giving a bravura performance, Hoffman plays Jack from teen years into old age in this picaresque fable of the Old West. Jack's story is a fantastic one: captured by Indians as a boy, reared as an Indian, shuttling back and forth between the white and Indian worlds. In the process, he befriends everyone from Wild Bill Hickock to George Armstrong Custer and is a gunslinger, a snake-oil salesman and an Army scout. This is a solid blend of comedy and tragedy, making a strong statement about America's treatment of Native Americans without sermonising. A terrific cast includes Faye Dunaway, Martin Balsam and Richard Mulligan, but this show is all Hoffman's. --Marshall Fine

  • Magnum PI - Series 1 [1981]Magnum PI - Series 1 | DVD | (13/09/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £34.99

A ratings hit for eight seasons on CBS, the action-mystery series Magnum, P.I. makes its DVD boxed set debut in an impressive five-disc package that offers not only the entire first season, but some rarely seen episodes. Positioned in the old Hawaii Five-O time slot (Thursdays at 9) in December of 1980, Magnum quickly became a hit, thanks to the combination of smart and witty scripting, gorgeous locations, and the considerable charm of lead Tom Selleck as former Naval Intelligence officer Thomas Magnum, who gives up his position to become a private investigator on Oahu with the help of fellow Vietnam vets T.C. (Roger E. Mosley) and Rick (Larry Manetti). Magnum also provided security for the lavish estate of wealthy (and never-seen) mystery writer Robin Masters, which gave him access to the author's expensive vehicles (including a prized Ferrari), much to the disapproval of Masters's manservant Higgins (Jonathan Hillerman). A rare series that skillfully blended action, humor, drama, and suspense, Magnum, P.I.'s first season gets the boxed set treatment its fans have been hoping for, with all 18 first-season episodes (including the two-part pilot, "Don't Eat the Snow in Hawaii") included on four discs. The fifth disc contains four rarely shown bonus episodes, including season 3's "Ki'ls Don't Lie," which featured a crossover plot with Simon and Simon, as well as its conclusion ("Emeralds Are Not a Girl's Best Friend"), which kicked off S&S's second season; the latter episode has never been aired as part of Magnum's syndicated package, which is another reason for fans to pick up and enjoy this long-awaited set. --Paul Gaita

  • Jawbreaker [1998]Jawbreaker | DVD | (10/01/2005) from £6.73   |  Saving you £-0.74 (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

A ferocious day-glo-coloured complement to Michael Lehmann's majestically spiteful late-80s teen black comedy Heathers, Jawbreaker invites us into the immaculately turned-out and deeply, deeply venal world of a quartet of high-school princesses led by one Courtney Shayne (Rose McGowan)--or "Satan in heels", as she's known to her peer group. The only thing is, Courtney's gang don't stay a quartet for long after the one vaguely likeable member of the group, Liz (Charlotte Ayanna) dies following a malicious birthday prank executed by her caring, sharing girlfriends. (All we can say is that it involves the titular hunk of candy.) Triumphantly convincing the world Liz was, in fact, the victim of a serial killer, Courtney gets on with ruling school with a manicured iron fist--except she didn't bargain for the sudden discovery of a conscience by her lieutenant Julie (Rebecca Gayheart), or the rumbling of her plan by class geek Fern Mayo (Judy Greer). In truth, no matter how badly Jawbreaker wants to be Heathers, there's little of the sharp, acidic wit or satirical glee which Lehmann brought to the table in the earlier movie--just a sticky and a faintly unpleasant aftertaste. That said, there's a certain cartoonish vibrancy to the proceedings, however predictably they unfold, and if McGowan's Joan Crawford Jr shtick as the vampish queen-bitch Shayne hardly extends her range as an actress, it's an accomplished piece of type-casting. --Danny Leigh
