In 1972's Bad Company a genteel Northerner during the American Civil War (Barry Brown) is robbed by scallywag Jeff Bridges--and winds up teaming up with him. Together they become a criminal duo (although with one member more reluctant than the other) in this entertaining, realistic tale of what the West was really like. Bridges has a gangly, easy-going demeanour, as well as a sense of playfulness that even extends to moments of extreme jeopardy. He makes an interesting team with the stiff, proper Brown, creating comedy seemingly out of thin air. This was the directing debut of Robert Benton, who had co-written Bonnie and Clyde and who would go on to win an Oscar for Kramer vs Kramer. --Marshall Fine
True Grit:True Grit is a powerful story of vengeance and valour set in an unforgiving and unpredictable frontier where justice is simple and mercy is rare. Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld), is determined to avenge her father's blood by capturing Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin), the man who shot and killed him for two pieces of gold.Just fourteen, she enlists the help of Rooster Cogburn Academy Award Winner Jeff Bridges), a one-eyed, trigger-happy U.S. Marshall with an affinity for drinking and hardened Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Academy Award Winner Matt Damon) to track the fleeing Chaney. Despite their differences, their ruthless determination leads them on a perilous adventure that can only have one outcome: retribution. No Country For Old Men:The Academy Award winning adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's violent, poetic and darkly funny crime novel No Country For Old Men sees The Coen Brothers produce their finest thriller to date. Set amongst the wild, empty, and imposing landscape of 1980s Texas, No Country For Old Men is a masterly tale of the good, the deranged, and the outright doomed.Approaching retirement, Sheriff Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) is one of the last links to the history of Texas' Old West and the men who patrolled the frontiers of decency and lawlessness. These days, though, he feels less and less able to comprehend the new breed of violent criminals that have drifted into his jurisdiction. Violent men like Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem): an enigmatic, psychopathic, and obsessively compulsive killer who determines the fate of his victims with a quick flip of a coin. Chigurh, an ex-special-forces operative turned hit man, has been hired to track down two million dollars in cash taken from the scene of a drug-deal gone awry and whoever spirited it away. That man is Llewellyn Moss (Josh Brolin): a financially struggling hardened Vietnam veteran who stumbled upon the money and a substantial amount of heroin amongst a sea of bloody corpses and a bullet-strewn truck whilst hunting antelope in the desert near the Mexican border.McCarthy's melancholic and muscular prose is a perfect match for the Coen brothers' unique brand of poker-faced irony. The narrative ellipses entwine with the Coens' modern noir nonchalance and dark humour to highlight and explore the similarities and differences of Moss, Chigurh, and Bell as they try to track one another down. With dark intelligence and an unstoppable array of sly wit, No Country For Old Men is reminiscent of Joel and Ethan Coen's early neo-noir motion picture Blood Simple and their much-lauded Academy Award winning Fargo and is a cat-and-mouse chase epic that engages and excites from beginning to end.

Two of Horror's greatest directors DARIO ARGENTO and GEORGE A. ROMERO join forces for Two Evil Eyes... 'Two Evil Eyes' (aka Due Occhi Diobolici) brings together two of the horror genre's greatest directors George A. Romero and Dario Argento to remake two Edgar Allan Poe tales previously brought to the big screen by B-movie maestro Roger Corman in his 1962 film 'Tales Of Terror'. Directed by Romero The Facts In The Case Of M. Valdemar tells the story of a scheming cheating wife (Adrienne Barbeau) who convinces her psychiatrist lover (Ramy Zada) to hypnotise her dying husband (Bingo O'Malley) in order to get him to sign his fortune over to her. When the husband dies while still under hypnosis he finds himself caught in a limbo between the worlds of the living and the dead and hungry for revenge. In The Black Cat directed by Argento Harvey Keitel plays Roderick Usher a feline-hating Weegee-like forensic photographer who naturally specialises in shooting pictures of death and murder scenes. When his wife Annabel (Madeleine Potter) brings home a stray cat Usher wastes no time in disposing of the animal. Unfortunately the cat refuses to stay dead prompting Usher's terrifying murderous descent into madness. Starring genre movie favourites Adrienne Barbeau Tom Atkins Bingo O'Malley and E.G. Marshall alongside Harvey Keitel Sally Kirkland Kim Hunter Martin Balsam and John Amos the movie also marks the feature film debut of a young Julie Benz. Featuring plenty of bloody mayhem to please the gore-hounds courtesy of special make-up effects wizards Tom Savini (Dawn Of The Dead Creepshow Day Of The Dead) and John Vulich (Day Of The Dead TV's Buffy The Vampire Slayer) and set to a suitably chilling score by Pino Donaggio (Carrie Dressed To Kill The Howling) 'Two Evil Eyes' is an essential addition to every horror aficionado's collection!

Woody Allen's Celebrity--a portrait of the celebrity life as seen through the eyes of a newly divorced couple--is a black-and-white, New York-style La Dolce Vita that's a chillier flip side to Allen's earlier New York valentine, Manhattan. Despite a few missteps, though, it's an admirable (if dark) and worthy addition to the Allen pantheon. Kenneth Branagh and Judy Davis (both boasting American accents) star as the ex-couple, each struggling to build new, separate lives in a media-saturated, celebrity-driven world. Branagh tries his hand at celebrity profiles (while peddling a screenplay to any star that will listen) and falls into the lap of a bosomy starlet (Melanie Griffith), the first in a long line of briefly attainable women. Davis runs into a producer (Joe Mantegna) who offers her a job as a TV personality as well as a loving relationship. This seemingly simple double plot is punctuated with twists and turns in the form of flashbacks and innumerable side trips, all ravishingly photographed in black and white by the legendary Sven Nykvist, and populated by one of Allen's largest casts ever; if you blink you'll miss countless cameos by Isaac Mizrahi, Donald Trump, Hank Azaria, Leonardo DiCaprio and a host of others. While Davis is splendid as usual (aside from the requisite nervous breakdown scene she's done one too many times), somebody should have told Branagh to put a kibosh on his Woody Allen imitation. His failure in the role, however, isn't entirely his fault, as it's another in a long line of unlikable male protagonists which Allen has created, as if daring audiences to hate his main characters after loving them in such movies as Manhattan and Annie Hall. Far more enjoyable misadventures with Branagh include Charlise Theron in the film's best performance as a libidinous supermodel with a penchant for Echinacea; a stunning Famke Janssen as a successful book editor; and Winona Ryder, acting like an adult for the first time, as an aspiring actress. But they all manage to slip through Branagh's fingers by the end of the film. --Mark Englehart, Amazon.com
