| RRP One of the best romantic comedies of the 1990s, My Best Friend's Wedding not only gave Julia Roberts a delightful vehicle for her crowd-pleasing comeback, but it further distinguished itself by avoiding the conventional plotting of the genre. She plays a prominent Chicago restaurant critic whose best friend (Dermot Mulroney) is a former lover from her college days with whom she'd made a binding pact: if neither of them were married by the age of 28, they'd marry each other. Just when they're about to reach the deadline of their agreement, Mulroney arrives in Chicago to introduce Roberts to his seemingly perfect fiancée (Cameron Diaz) and announce their wedding in just three days. That leaves the shocked Julia with just three short days to sabotage the wedding and marry the man she now realises she's loved all along. With potential heartbreak waiting in the wings, she'll either get what she wants or pay the price for her selfish behaviour, and Ronald Bass' cleverly constructed screenplay keeps us guessing to the very end. It's no surprise that this was one of the box-office smashes of 1997. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com On the DVD: My Best Friend's Wedding is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and there is very little grain or noise, the only blurring coming from those soft focus moments. There are two "making-of" documentaries, one produced by HBO and the other a general behind the scenes mix of fly on the wall footage and interviews with cast and crew. Masquerading as helpful hints for the soon to be wed there's also a short featurette called "Wedding Do's and Don'ts". You can also sing along with one of the film's more bizarre moments; the fish restaurant rendition of "Say a Little Prayer", check out the pictures in the wedding album and read the filmographies. --Kristen Bowditch

| RRP When Bryan Singer brought Marvel's X-Men to the big screen, Magneto and Professor X were elder statesmen, but Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) travels back in time to present an origin story--and an alternate version of history. While Charles Xavier (Laurence Belcher) grows up privileged in New York, Erik Lehnsherr (Bill Milner) grows up underprivileged in Poland. As children, the mind-reading Charles finds a friend in the shape-shifting Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) and Erik finds an enemy in Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon), an energy-absorbing Nazi scientist who treats the metal-bending lad like a lab rat. By 1962, Charles (James McAvoy) has become a swaggering genetics professor and Erik (Michael Fassbender, McAvoy's Band of Brothers costar) has become a brooding agent of revenge. CIA agent Moira (Rose Byrne) brings the two together to work for Division X. With the help of MIB (Oliver Platt) and Hank (A Single Man's Nicholas Hoult), they seek out other mutants, while fending off Shaw and Emma Frost (Mad Men's January Jones), who try to recruit them for more nefarious ends, leading to a showdown in Cuba between the United States and the Soviet Union, the good and bad mutants, and Charles and Erik, whose goals have begun to diverge. Throughout, Vaughn crisscrosses the globe, piles on the visual effects, and juices the action with a rousing score, but it's the actors who make the biggest impression as McAvoy and Fassbender prove themselves worthy successors to Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. The movie comes alive whenever they take centre stage, and dies a little when they don't. For the most part, though, Vaughn does right by playing up the James Bond parallels and acknowledging the debt to producer Bryan Singer through a couple of clever cameos. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

| RRP Director Lucio Fulci is widely regarded as the Godfather of Gore'. But being famous for his gore-artistry is, somewhat unfairly, to the detriment of the magistral filmmaker that he was. Fulci is revered by Tarantino (who borrowed the tune of The Psychic in his Kill Bill) and other Hollywood mavericks as their avowed influence. This new edition of THE PSYCHIC is exclusive as it has been extensively further restored from new 2K scanned materials to show Fulci's gem like never before; for the 1st time truly doing justice to the Maestro's original vision, making this the definitive world-exclusive version of the film deservedly described by Stephen Thrower in his reference-work on the director: THE PSYCHIC deserves careful consideration as one of Fulci's best films' Crafted with intense attention to detail, scripted and delivered in a flawless, almost mathematical, linear fluidity, Fulci builds with each scene a new layer of increasing suspense like no other of his films. This is a Hitchcockian whodunit thriller seen through Fulci's vision of disjointed universes where reality and dreams, the dead and the living, the past and present are all interconnected. Jennifer O'Neill, fresh from Visconti's last film The Innocent', plays Virginia who has had psychic powers since childhood, starting with the trauma of having sensed, from a great distance, the very moment of her mother's suicide Now newly married and rich, Virginia becomes plagued by waking visions of bloody deaths and meaningless images which torment her. With the aid of her parapsychologist friend (Marc Porel) who carries a torch for her, they try to elucidate the meaning of these horrific unwanted visions only to slowly discover that these are premonitions of future deaths

Savage Garden - Superstars And Cannonballs: Live On Tour In Australia | DVD | (13/12/2004)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Savage Garden, Australia's hottest export of recent years, are captured here in all their live glory as they hit their hometown of Brisbane in a triumphant sell-out homecoming gig. There is a fair amount of behind-the-scenes footage which serves to back up the roles that the two members of the band have adopted: singer Darren is the outgoing excitable one, attracted like a moth to a flame by the trappings of celebrity, whereas guitarist Daniel is the private and shy one, preferring to stay out of the limelight and just write songs. But with millions of records sold all around the world, sell-out tours, hysterical fans and a string of chart-topping singles, this unlikely pairing proves the old adage that opposites attract. All the hits are here--"To the Moon and Back", "Affirmation", "Truly, Madly Deeply", "The Animal Song" and others--but after a while the visuals do become very samey: with only two of them to look at, and one of them tending to stray away from the spotlight at every available opportunity, the poor cameramen don't have many options. The backdrop to the concert is a huge wall of multi-coloured blocks of lights, apparently based on memories of a trip to Blackpool (but without the rain, chip wrappers and drunken brawls, sadly). It's all very polished, and just a little bit sterile as it fails to recreate the atmosphere of the live experience. However, for those who were there it's a great lasting reminder. The DVD menu allows the viewer to choose multiple camera angles on a select number of tracks. --Helen Marquis
